Someone on this board (I can't remember who and in which thread) said there was a law that forbid translating the Koran into other languages (i.e., not Arabic), because it was Allah's holy words to the faithful. In short, we're allowed to print a Braille edition of the Koran because denying the blind the holy words of Allah is a greater sin than translating and possibly distorting those words.

You know, people in western countries used to be a lot less sympathetic to the disabled, centuries ago. There's a prevailing mindset in some circles that if someone is disabled, then it's "God's will" that he continue to suffer. We see disability from birth as a great injustice, but for a person who believes that every raindrop, every gust of wind is the will of God, how can any natural occurrence be an injustice?

Iran does in fact, subsidize gender reassignment surgery, even though they still hang homosexuals. The way it works out is, suppose you're a woman that wants to be a man. While still presenting as a woman, having sex with women gets you the noose. However, once you've transitioned, it's perfectly okay to have sex with women, but having sex with men now gets you the noose. Also, the populace isn't as tolerant as the government, transsexuals in Iran are very much in danger of hate crimes.
