Bike Race Crash

Post by Kanastrous »

What the hell is it, with drivers who can't restrain themselves from mowing down cyclists...?

MONTERREY, Mexico - A car plowed into a bike race along a highway near the U.S.-Mexico border, killing one and injuring 10 others.

The 28-year-old driver was apparently drunk and fell asleep when he crashed into the race Sunday, police investigator Jose Alfredo Rodriguez said Monday.

A photograph taken by a city official showed bicyclists and equipment being hurled high into the air by the collision.

Rodriguez said Juan Campos was charged with killing 37-year-old Alejandro Alvarez of Monterrey.

Authorities said the wreck happened 15 minutes into the 34-kilometer race Sunday along a highway between Playa Bagdad and Matamoros, across from Brownsville, Texas.

Campos said he is an American citizen living in Brownsville. The U.S. Consulate could not immediately confirm that.

"We are looking into the incident in terms of whether American citizens were involved,'' consulate spokesman Todd Huizinga said.

Yeah.

I hope the jury is encouraged to meditate upon it, during the penalty phase of Campos' trial.

Um, how would that change things, would the US embassy really ensure he got off with a handslap in such a case :?

The difference is probably that American prisons are more pleasant that Mexican ones. No proof of that, though.

Personally, I think we should let Mexico have him.

Considering how Mexico has treated US nationals who were actually not at fault for accidents, in which no Mexicans got hurt, I shudder to think how they'll treat a US citizen who was at fault, for having killed a Mexican national...

...not that it wouldn't be deserved.

According to this article He and some girl had been drinking all night on the beach and they were at the time returning to town. The same article mentions that witnesses heard him saying "I fell asleep":
Según los testigos, parecía evidente que el hombre había entrado en shock, ya que no sólo gritaba, sino también lloraba. “Me quedé dormido”.

This other article says that he confessed that he used cocaine that night:
Jesse, quien también dijo llamarse Juan Campos, con domicilio en el 233 de San Eugenio, Brownsville, se encontraba ebrio y según los agentes que lo detuvieron, declaró que antes también había consumido cocaína.
Here are some more photos.

From his expression in that last frame, I sincerely hope that cop is breaking his wrists...

Oh fuck, I should not be laughing right now.

That picture is nuts.
I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

To be fair, the dude was passed out. Of course, that only makes it worse.

I can't shake the feeling that if this had happened in the US, Fox would already be spinning a way to blame it on GTAIV.

IIRC, the job of the consulate in such situations isn't to 'get you off', but to make sure that local law is followed (instead of simply making a scapegoat of the evil American) and to insure that you have access to counsel.

That said, unless this fucker was literally being held at gunpoint while driving the car, he's guilty as Hell.
"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."- General Sir Charles Napier

The organizers have fucked up here too. The highway should have been closed for the time of the bike race.

Well...

...being conscious behind the wheel, seems like the first step towards restraining one's self from mowing down cyclists, to me.
