I really wouldn't consider them "rabid", but they are really dumb, not only because they watch it, and are entertained by it, some of them think it's real.weemadando wrote:The most virulent of all rabid fanbases...

The most rabid fanbase out there would have to be religous fundamentalism. You don't see Trekkies handing out pamphlets on the streets, or Fivers blowing themselves up in public.

When you mentioned heavy metal, extreme metal fans are called metalheads or headbangers.Captain Lennox wrote: I hate them especially my brother who refuses too admit it's fake. Especially wrestling, heavy metal, Christian Fundies.
By the way, have anybody mentioned Gaters, who are Stargate fans??

Knights of the True Fiancee (KOTF) People who believe that Akane Tendo is the only possible choice for a happy marriage to Ranma Saotome, and who are sometimes very obnoxious to anyone with a different viewpoint. Of course, if you don't give a shit about Ranma 1/2 this isn't likely to mean much to you.
The Klingon Diplomatic Corps-a lot of the people you see running around in the full movie or next gen Klingon makeup at cons.
You know, its kind of sad that I have had people obsessed with various s-f shows around me for my entire life, and I don't even know how most of them refer to themselves,

First of all, I'm an SCAer & Re-enactor (I like dressing up in Mideval or Civil war garb and pretending to kill others). I am a biblophile (I will read just about anything). however for entertainment value you just have to see a member of the Klingon Diplomatic Corps, getting into a fight with a Northwind Highlander at a Ren. Faire (The Northwinders are allowed, the Klingons are not, because while the Battletech Scots are decent at not being a disturbance during an otherwise nice bit of make believe.)
The scariest folk song lyrics are "My Boy Grew up to be just like me" from cats in the cradle by Harry Chapin

Oh, I'm also a Warsie and a Fiver, rabid and not-very-rabid, respectively. I definitely believe in sex, but Sex and Quake, nope. Don't mix! Fansub Elietists.
These are the people who come into an anime thread shouting "OMFG its 'bejita' not 'vegeta'!!!111 I AM FUCKNIG GOIGN TO KILL YUO!!!!!"
The main thing for them is that they think that fan-made subtitled episodes of anime are godly examples of translation, even though some totally cannibalize the standard Hepburn hiragana-english letter transliteration model, throwing out 'u's and 'h's everywhere and things like (serriously, this happened) spelling Goku's name as 'Gohkuoh'.
The idea that some subtitle scripts can (and sometimes do) diverge from the original Japanese as much as a dub is a totally foreign concept to them, just like the phrase "just because it's text doesn't mean it perfectly converts from Japanese speech. There's more to translation than lip synch, you know."
They also tend to lack most social skills, comprehension of the purpose of communication or translation, and only have a vocabulary of about 12 words/phrases in Japanese, despite watching over 60 hours of the stuff, though they do end speaking it like 14-year old schoolgirls.

Gotta go with Utsanomiko on the fan subbers. Jesus fucking Christ...It's SUBBED, of course it's better!!!! is their rally cry.
I mean I liked sub at times(seen very few weel done Dubs) but chrickey.
Next for me is Marvel Zombies...and no I don't mean the regular fan I mean literally the people who believe that Marvel is the best there is at storytelling and liking any other company is blasphemy or some such nonsense.
It's fun going to a con seeing them try to ream into a write about why they left Marvel(then again Peter David reams back...which is funny in of itself)

Japanophiles.
You know who I mean. They're everywhere. In school. At cons. On the net. People- usually Americans- who absolutely worship Japan. They don't care about it's rich cultural past, they don't care about it's customs or it's history, oh no.
It's always anime, and whatever video game, and whatever manga, etc. etc. America, in comparison, sucks. American entertainment is crappy. Japanese stuff is the only way to go.
I mean, Jesus Christ! Yeah, some anime is good, but a lot of American enertainment is FINE! Give me Batman Adventures or Batman Beyond or The Justice League over Inuyasha or DBZ or Gundum anyday! American comics are good, too- I mean, they differ from the Japanese comic style dramatically- but 'Empire' and 'The Punisher' and others, Marvel and DC, are all good, too!

By gum some of those are just plain scarey. I used to lurk at a pokemon massage board a few years ago and these people were hurling around death threats. It was scarey to say the least.Archaic` wrote:If you think the average Pokémaniacs is bad, then you should look at some of the niche sub-groups within that fandom. If you lurked around one of the message boards, then you've probably already recognise who I am. ^^;;; Though I don't get where you got death threats from. I don't remember any of us ever doing that. Oo Anyway, which one were you at? UPN, BMG, Abode, TPM, or some other?

Well, I have now waited out in near or below-freezing temperatures for every Star Wars film released thus far (and I have no doubt I'll do the same for Episode III.) Since that's the ONLY series of films I've ever done that for, and since I didn't wait alone, I'd say that is a strong argument in favor of Warsies being a pretty fanatical group. I'd add that we had several people in costume, including Jedi, Darth Maul, Darth Vader, and a stormtrooper.
FPS-wise Quake is a distant third for me, behind UT and AVP 2. Why? I like to camp, that's why. I was bitterly disappointed that they replaced the sniper rifle in UT with the lightning gun in UT 2003, leaving a highly visible trail so people can see where I'm shooting from. The Ion Painter makes up for it though... that thing leaves a HELL of a mess when it hits. Then you've got the Redeemer: there's nothing like popping off a tacnuke at your enemies. AVP 2 offers the cloaked pred with the speargun... also great for camping. I've tried it with the railgun in Quake but it's just not the same because there's no scope on the damn thing.

I do remember you and I was from BMG (was called Charishard). Most of the death threat type messages I saw were on ezboard message boards, though I think most of them may have been jokes (I bloody well hope they were)Archaic` wrote:If you lurked around one of the message boards, then you've probably already recognise who I am. ^^;;; Though I don't get where you got death threats from.
