UN allows foreign ships to fight pirates off Somali coast

Post by fgalkin »

Linky
The United Nations has granted authority for foreign ships to enter Somalian waters in order to fight piracy and armed robbery.

All 15 members of the UN Security Council on Monday voted in favour of the resolution, aimed at fighting nautical attacks and hijackings along the East African country's 3,000-kilometre coastline.

Somalia's transitional president, Abdullahi Yusuf, told the council "the issue of piracy is beyond our present means and capabilities.

"Hence, we would like to request the Security Council to urgently adopt the draft resolution on piracy off the coast of Somalia," he said.

There have been more than a dozen pirate attacks off the coast of Somalia this year.

According to the resolution, ships of foreign nations that co-operate with Somalia's government during the next six months can "enter the territorial waters of Somalia for the purpose of repressing acts of piracy and armed robbery at sea."
Can I get a HELL YEAH from the audience?

Have a very nice day.

Who doesn't like the Tripoli War? It's a conflict against Muslim raiders that the U.S. actually won without a second thought.

I'd love to spend a summer hunting pirates.
"The 4th Earl of Hereford led the fight on the bridge, but he and his men were caught in the arrow fire. Then one of de Harclay's pikemen, concealed beneath the bridge, thrust upwards between the planks and skewered the Earl of Hereford through the anus, twisting the head of the iron pike into his intestines. His dying screams turned the advance into a panic."'

While this is spiffy, why does the international community care about Somalia's territorial waters in the first place, given its complete lack of internal control? Or, to sum up...what were the assorted naval nations waiting for? It's certainly not that they're nervous of Somalia's well-organized, competent military taking exception to having their job done for them.

As Teebs said its about precedent. Somalia is acknowledged as a sovereign nation and violating their territorial waters with armed ships is basically casus belli. Other nations don't want to set the precedent that it is okay to do so and the person whose waters you violate won't fight back.

Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

This is a navy's meat and potatoes. Clearing the high seas of the scum of the earth has a long and honourable tradition.

And imagine the spectacle of a pirate trawler getting shot to pieces by an Arleigh Burke or a Perry.

Does anyone know the current laws on treatment of pirates? Are they actually arrested, or is it just sink the ship and let 'em drown?

For this job, you need the West Virginia, aka the Silent Mountaineer (ok, so she's an Ohio-class. We got over it.)
