No, no they shouldn't. They will be, and they have every right to. There'll likely be a lot of posturing and doing of nothing over the issue of people who snap.
Perhaps they'll even enact a little old fashioned American Retardation and crack down on innocent people who do things that would have been laughed off otherwise.
Shock is not a good thing. It just illustrates the presence of a 'it can't happen here' mentality, which is the root of a great number of humanity's problems.

It's amazing how, with each post, he tries to make his initial post seem more like some kind of moral sermon than the brain-damaged attempt at smart-assery that we all know it was.

Out of 14 posts on the first page. (Twelve, if you subtract my post, and the one before it.) 5 are implying they wish to resort to violence upon me, implying I enjoy the depiction of much worse acts, or simply stating that I should inflict harm upon myself.
Over what is, essentially, a difference of opinion. Yes, I can see the obvious moral superiority of your position.
To be fair, you yourself Wong, acted in a manner much more in line with your position that the dead here are worth any random person on the planet's empathy. Rather than displaying a desire for additional violence, choosing simply to insulting me.
Although, it will continue to amuse me should any additional people get as far as the second post, and hit reply immediately with further insinuations.

While I am inclined to give you a shovel for you to continue digging a hole for yourself, do you know when to shut the fuck up?

It's rather ironic that I pointed out his attempt to cover up his initial error by making each post more sanctimonious than the last, and he immediately follows by doing exactly what I described.

While I don't doubt this is cruising for the HoS here, can we at least give the fucker a stern rap on the head for the fact he apparently finds this funny? Or do we need to wait until he explicitly breaks one of the debating rules to look into titling/warning/tempban/etc?

Hmmm..... you know, it would be a sorry state of affairs if we spanked people merely for expressing unpopular opinions. The way the concept of "free speech" was explained to me way 'long time ago by mama, popular speech doesn't need protecting, it's UNpopular speech that needs protecting.
So, yeah, he has actually break a rule and not merely piss us off before I, at least, would feel justified in doing anything to him.
I don't have to be opposed to violence to find a statement that violence is amusing to be offensive - because the universe is a hostile place violence is, at times, a necessary evil but that doesn't mean I approve of taking joy in it.

I know some folks have gotten arrested before being able to carry out plots because they posted their plans on 2chan and people informed the authorities. There's a lot of possibilities as to why this didn't get prevented, but it's frightening to know that he announced it beforehand.

I wonder if it's the Japanese reputation as being a society with little such violence? The US might take such postings more seriously simply because (unfortunately) we've had too much experience with such.

Apparently the "posting about the attacks on 2chan" is actually media sensationalism.
The chilling part (if trying to kill 17 people wasn't chilling enough!) is how Kato chronicled the events leading up to his mass murders. Truly disturbing. AFP via Yahoo! News incorrectly points out: "On a different site, an anonymous posting on May 27 was entitled 'A disaster in Akihabara' and warned that an incident would take place on June 5." As commenter muu points out, the "disaster" that the thread is referring to? Ninja Gaiden 2 — which went on sale, you guessed it, on June 5th in, that's right, Akihabara. The thread is apparently nothing more than a fanboy flamewar. That Ninja Gaiden 2 Xbox 360/PS3 fanboy fight appeared on television news here as well (above). Yahoo! News Japan has pulled its original story, but at time of posting Yahoo! News was still running that AFP story.

Actually, the Japanese have a reputation for suppressed violence more than anything, what with the high annual suicide rates among students and what not. A very straight laced society.
