Who says government moves at a glacial pace? It was all of, what, 20 hours, start to finish, and all the proper procedures were gone through. He's gone, and good riddance.

FALLOUT:

I git this in my PM box over the weekend:
Hello. I don't post on the board much, but I'm hoping you could help me out. I'm PMing you in particular simply because you were the one to start the banning thread for Warsie regarding his moronic FBI prank.

My roomate occasionally lurks and surfs the board while at work, he unforunately clicked on the link. He was contacted from the IT guys at his work about it and he may now face serious trouble. He would like to prove it was the accidental result of a stupid internet prank, but naturally the original thread has been removed. It was mentioned that the thread was saved for the evidencial purposes, but I haven't been able to find anything. I'm not sure if only mods can access it or if it has since been removed entirely. He asked me to find out if there is any way that the thread has survived in some form so that he can point to it and say "no, I just clicked on this". As it stands, he's trying to convince the IT guys that the search was the result of an internet thread that no longer exists, he feels they may not believe him.

If there's anything you can think of that may help, it would be greatly appreciated. It likely is not entirely necessary, as he will be showing them the thread where the prank was discussed, but he's naturally scared shitless and would like any evidence he could gather to dispel the suspicions that have arisen.

Yeah, banning him was a good idea.

Anyway, if anyone needs a screenshot of the post in question.

Here you go.

Hope that helps.

Wouldn't be a bad idea to link this thread as well and have the IT people from his work also contact the SDnet administration to verify what took place. That could get him off the hook.

Considering he actually harmed a person maybe we should really think about reporting him to appropriate authorities, eh? :?

So far , it appears our potential unfortunate victim may be okay... it depends on how reasonable his IT guys are, and boss.
Thankyou very much. That screenshot plus the thread discussing the prank should be enough to convince the guys at his work. Terrible to thing to be accused of though. I'm sure as hell glad that guy got banned.

Thanks again.

Some more--
Hey, I obviously showed up late to the party on this one. I made the mistake of clicking on Warsie's "SFW" link, and I can only hope I'm not on the receiving end of any consequences. (Hopefully no one cares about the half-second it took me to go "WTF?" and click "Back.")

Thanks for being on top of it, and I was glad to see that the board is helping someone who's already taken shit for this.
Now, to all who are following this, be it known that Frank Hipper has been kind enough to bundle up some of the information from Warsie's original thread; I have them in my inbox for reference in case anyone else runs into trouble on this.

Aw, Hell. Apparantly there is a ripple effect forming. I got this in my PM box a few minutes ago from eyexist.

Unfortunately I just got a call from a former co-worker that he and three others are being suspended without pay for clicking on Warsie's link. My former job is not in the habit of making exceptions so it is very likely that they will either be fired or forced to resign.

Although I no longer work for them I left the job on good terms, so I'll attempt to speak with the human resources department and see how far it goes.

Feel free to disclose my username.

And this from Einy:
I just saw your post in the Senate about friends of eyexist getting burned in Real Life by Warsie's fallout. I believe we now have a real casus belli to make Warsie's life a living hell by reporting his attack on SDN (yes, it was a real attack IMHO) to any and all authorities who will listen at the earliest opportunity humanly possible. We must report early and often, and maybe even publish his IP and email addresses so as to get him shut down by his ISP.

This shit has gone too far, and it is now incumbent on Warsie to serve as a very stern warning that if one endangers people in the manner he did, then the Consequences shall always be swift and severe.

Thank you.

P.S. all rights to this message I grant to the Senate. You may freely publish this PM and disclose its author in any way you see fit. Good day.

I agree - if it hasn't been done already this should be reported to the appropriate authorities. NO ONE from the boards should attempt a private vendetta, let law enforcement handle it. Entrapment is not OK, and that's basically what he did, but vigilantism has too much potential to run off the tracks.

Title changed to reflect morphing of discussion.

It may be time to establish procedures for this sort of thing in the future; not just damage containment but at what point authorities are contacted, if any, etc.

Releasing Warsie's personal information and ISP to those affected so that they might bring lawsuits against him comes to mind as one thing we can certainly do to help resolve this.

Also, publicizing the event to news sources might not be a bad idea, to warn people of the danger of clicking on these sorts of links.

Report that little motherfucker to his ISP and to the police and the FBI for good measure. Entrapment is a crime and he's liable for the shit he pulled in civil court if nowhere else. I hope his victims sue him so deep into the ground that he'll still be paying the damages 30 years from now.

Unfortunately I can't offer any constructive advice because all of my work experience with ISPs is in the Finnish regulatory environment, which is much, much tighter than anything in the US. One thing that is certain though is that nobody is going to get anything out of those ISPs without a court order or as part of a criminal investigation because they can't just hand out info for the asking. Doing so would leave them open to much larger liabilities. So it's going to be a long process soaked in blood and tears before there is any resolution unless the employers of the victims are willing to consider the extenuating circumstances of this case.

Another PM from eyexist:
Well I have an update regarding my former co-workers. Unfortunately four people will be losing their jobs once the dust settles. The company would rather wash their hands completely of this and send a message to the other employees that browse websites that aren't 'company approved'.

I advised them to submit their resignations in writing right away so they won't be filed as a termination due to abuse of company property. Neither of them expressed an interest in filing a lawsuit. I'll try and persuade them otherwise.

You may disclose this PM as well.
