They do not seem to make a strong tactical distinction between capital ships and fighters as we do, preferring to simply utilize all starships in a similar manner and for similar purposes. Therefore, the most important difference between their capital ships and fighters is the presence of omnidirectional firing "strips" on the capital ships, which greatly reduce the importance of maneuverability. Their absence on fighters and Defiant-class starships forces those ships to "point toward" targets rather than simply trying to remain in their vicinity, and it is for this reason that the Defiant is closer to a fighter than a capital ship in spite of its relatively large size.
Basically, the tendency of means of transportation to increase in size as technology advances (compare the size of a Sopwith Camel to that of a F-15 Eagle, or the USS Constitution to a Ticonderoga class cruiser), means that what was considered gigantic by yesterday's standards is considered tiny by today's, and what is considered gigantic by today's standards will likely be considered tiny by tomorrow's. We think of the Defiant class as a warship by today's standards, but who knows how fucking big the fighters of the future will be?
Please do not make Americans fight giant monsters.

Those gun nuts do not understand the meaning of "overkill," and will simply use weapon after weapon of mass destruction (WMD) until the monster is dead, or until they run out of weapons.

They have more WMD than there are monsters for us to fight. (More insanity here.)

What else do you expect from AR15.com?
X-COM: Defending Earth by blasting the shit out of it.

Except the Federation HAS fighters, and they're not Defiant class.

Generally, intelligent discussions about guns and politics. Sci-fi? Not so much.

Intelligent?

Please. Every other post in that thread is "ZOMG TEH NERDZ ARE INVASION!" Moronic over-testosteroned ex-jocks trying to recapture the glory days of being a high school football star before they squandered all their intellectual and athletic potential by getting jobs at their local blockbuster where they are now a fat assistant shift supervisor struggling to feed their fat, non-working redneck wife and 4 dirt-smeared snot-nosed kids living in a 1982 single-wide trailer down a two mile long dirt road because they spend all of what little paycheck they get buying ammunition and beer to spend every free moment at the range trying to forget what losers they are.

Well. The White Star is basically a fighter, to the point that the first combat worthy white star series models produced by the Minbari and Vorlons actually were one man fighters. It does generally perform much like a very big fighter. Same with the Defiant.

Anyway, what's with the hatred of this AR15 forum? This smells a lot like pointless flames and spam to me.

Indeed. Especially since the only common ground for any of the posters there is that they (like myself) like guns, and even then some don't even own any. They run the entire political spectrum, half of them are Europeans, and the majority are technicians, lawyers, police officers, or nurses.

Oh, but hey, I forgot: to a limp-wristed bitch, anyone who isn't afraid of a gun is a big, mean, bully who only owns guns to make up for the fact that he can't kill things with his penis.

As for the NERD! comments and other putdowns at Arfcom, it's a running meme in any sci-fi thread. Half the guys who do it are actually the biggest geeks there.

In the paying member-exclusive forum, there's not one, but TWO threads by a group of furries documenting the Anthrocon convention this year. It takes all kinds.
