Their both strong enough to tear each others arms off.

Well, Chewie can be awful strong when agitated. But then again, Data is pretty tough himself. I would say that it would be a VERY good and close match.

Definatley alot better than Chewie vs Worf.

Could go either way I suppose, unarmed. Armed, Chewie takes it hands down.

Data is overconfident and often shockingly naive. Chewie would tear Data's arms off because of the element of surprise and overconfidence on Data's part.

If data is designed in a similar to B-4 (or was it B9, I forget), he has connection points on his arms. So they were designed to coem off, making it easier for chewie

Easily. Riker twisted one of Data's arms off in "Measure of a Man"

HIGHLY dubious, at best. Data is immensely strong (easily defeating a Klingon warrior in an arm-wrestling contest), and is made of fairly strong parts, as shown when he was head-butted in the same episode.

I remember an episode where Data held back a Taxi trying to drive away... Then there's where he arm wrestles a Borg, which are fairly strong.

Since Data's arms are actually detachable, tearing them off wouldn't be such a great accomplishment.

Seeing that Data has been run over by a car (I think, so don't quote me on that one), been shot, has held back the aforementioned taxis, and survived the hard vacuum of space, I seriously doubt that would do anything to him.

It would be easier to simply rear up, punch him in the face, and knock his head off :)

for that matter, what ARE the indicator/incidents involving the strength of each?

possibly. a number of factors are in play.
Both have good strength.
data has an advantage on speed.
considerign chewie will kill and data won't that is an advanatage to chewie
chewie will tire.If I was data. i would makechewie overwork himself and then go in for the kill.

if I was chewie I would go for an immediate killadn use my enviorment to my advantage. fight in a forested area ro some area wehr ei cna use my climbign abilitie sto my advantage and do soem wrestlign moves on data.
it al dependson who is smart enough inthe beginign to see through hsi opponant.

Good question.

Yet again, I've only second-hand accounts of Chewie's strength from
the EU. I do recall that on Kashykk, he could effortlessly swing from trees one-armed with Leia hanging on him. If he was doing the equivalent
of one-armed chins over and over, with his weight alone, he's about
as strong as a male gorilla.

And we know what he can do in ANH, killing an Imperial soldier with a back-handed slap.

Data's probably as strong as his "daughter" Lal, who Picard said had
"the strength of ten men."

Chewie's got some KIND of crazy reach on Data, even if they were
comparable in strength. And he has claws. I'm told Wookies consider using their claws in battle as dishonorable, but piss Chewie off and it might not matter.

Wait, are we talking about a combat situation in this scenario (ie. Chewie and Data fight, Chewie tries to rip off Data's arms), or a situation in which Chewie walks over to Data and tries to rip his arm off?

Also look at Data's speed with his hands.
In The Offspring:
"His hands were moving faster than I could see"

Also in ST:FC and others we see Data moving his hands very fast.

In Descent pt1 Data easily picks up a Borg with one hand.

He also picks up something heavy in Times Arrow, I can't remember what it was though.
