Hm, quite surprising, esp when the polled were asked if they would be willing to have the plant built in their own community, signaling a weakening of NIMBYism.

I think it just shows that people are now waking up to the twin facts that (1) we need a new and vigorous approach to energy policy and (2) the negative aspects of a nuclear power plant in your neighborhood are actually less than those of a fossil fuel plant in the same.
It's definitely encouraging.

Naw, Bush is not comperable to the Empire. Because Palpatine was smart enough to increase the size of the Army and make sure everyone had armor before deploying them to endless cycles of wars.
Seriously, this is good news, and long past time to consider for our energy needs. There's talk of a nuclear plant here in Idaho, in neighboring Elmore Countey where the Air Force Base is, and I hope it goes through (we already fought to keep a coal plant out that not only would have fucked up the environment, but all the power would have been transmitted to California-- we wouldn't get a single benefit from it).
But I continue to carp on the issue of the infrastructure needed to make proper use of all this. We need to upgrade the capacity of the power lines to handle it.

Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."
In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!
If all you want to do is have some harmless, mindless fun, go H3RE INST3ADZ0RZ!!

Because "nuclear power plant = nuclear = bombs = war = EVIL!!!"
Not to mention "nuclear power plant = Chernobyl = Hiroshima = EVIL!!!"

Plus a lof of the Democratic party still has to maintain ties with hard-core Environmentalists.

Even that might be changing, particularly as you've now got a pro-nuke Democrat at the top of the ticket this year.

Oil an emergency?! It's about time, Brigadier, that the leaders of this planet of yours realised that to remain dependent upon a mineral slime simply doesn't make sense.

I resemble that remark, and am in favor of nuclear plants...Coyote wrote:Plus a lof of the Democratic party still has to maintain ties with hard-core Environmentalists.
There is a difference between environmentalist and idiot...
Fuck, the coolant water runoff from nuclear plants can be used to protect existing, or replace drained wetlands. Just have to let it cool from "superheated" before letting it drain into habitats...
See the case of the American Crocodile, and its current recover thanks to the nuke plants in FL

At least publicly, Barack Obama isn't really pro nuclear:Patrick Degan wrote:Even that might be changing, particularly as you've now got a pro-nuke Democrat at the top of the ticket this year.

I can't even imagine how nuclear power would work if Yucca Mountain, our best waste repository, could only support plants in Nevada, and states like Rhode Island. The Obama campaign said Monday the candidate did not accept money from Exelon's lobbyists. Spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the letter shows Obama "doesn't believe any state should be burdened with storing the waste from others as long as the state has a storage site to deal with its own waste."
I plan to vote for Obama, largely because of his ties to Exelon and openness to charter schools, but I'm annoyed that he'd say something as ridiculous as this. Why shouldn't one state hold another state's waste? Is it unethical for a company in California to run a search engine used by other states?
