Religious reactions to the founding fathers
Were the American founding fathers ever explicitly criticized or even excommunicated in their own lifetimes by any religious organizations in Europe or anywhere else for that matter? For all the secular rabblerousing they did and their overt deism, they don't seem to have garnered much notable response from any of the faithful of their time that I can recall.
When Thomas Jefferson was running for president, his opponents were calling him a dirty atheist who planned on destroying all the churches and turning them into "temples of reason". And I know Thomas Paine caught a lot of flak after he wrote The Age of Reason but I don't know if he's usually counted amongst the "Founding Fathers" sainthood circle.
