Great, threaten your nuclear armed neighbour and expand the area of conflict. Can't see that going wrong.

I can really see this going the way of the Soviets and the west just pulling out its troops to leave their installed government to their fate hanging from the lampposts. If only America had another 157,000 soldiers laying about somewhere to commit.

Wouldn't do much good if we did. The infrastructural base in Afghanistan is so shit that we would be unable to supply them. The Soviets were able to supply a larger force, yes, but the Soviet army was both less logistically intensive per soldier, and they could just drive supplies over. The US needs port facilities.
