I went to high school in north county St. Louis at one of the most Ghetto HS's in the entire state in the early 90s. Yeah, go figure that a big city high school with a lot of students, in a poor part of town, with a virtually non-existent sex-ed program is going to have more pregnancies then bumfuck middle of the swamp Louisiana (or any Rural community for that matter).

There was a similar article last year regarding some in Canada I believe.
Has the school been actively trying to drill responsibility into these people, or has it fallen altogether on deaf ears?

Oh, come the fuck on! I've seen one (possibly) pregnant girl in the past year. I didn't see anything as a freshman. Hell, one of the running jokes at Lake Mary is that you can get laid as long as you say that you have a condom in your backpack. If anything, we're safer than most schools.Master of Cards wrote:My high school has about 10 a year mate.
In 1988, my graduating class of 125 had 5 girls who were visibly pregnant. Within the next 6 months, another 3 girls had kids.
Count in the classmate who had to drop out of 6th grade to have her baby and never was able to return to school (she's now a GrandMother, because her daughter pulled a similar trick), that's 9 girls out of the 70 girls in my year-group.
Nearly 1 out of 7? That's rather shitty.

I went to school in one of the more well off areas around Houston. Mostly middle class with some upper middle/lower upper class and a few lower class thrown in. But think about it, you have 3 out of 1000 people pregnant, that's about 1/333. I had about 1/185, a little bit more than double, in a school that had well over 5000 (probably around 6000) students pass through it during my tenure.Commander 598 wrote:What the fuck kind of hellholes do you live in? Onset of menses is common as early as 10, common enough that it's not considered pathological in absence of other symptoms. In which case grandma at 20 is quite possible and likely has happened.
Earliest successful pregnancy (both mother and son lived normal, healthy lifespans) involved a 6 year old mother - THAT was abnormal, needless to say, but it shows that it is theoretically possible to be a grandma at 12. Pretty unlikely, but possible.
Prior to the 20th Century, and in many truly impoverished areas today, puberty comes in the mid to late teens for women, 15-20, so historically grandma between 30 and 40 probably happened fairly often. It's believed that lack of childhood diseases as well as very abundant food is a major factor in puberty arriving earlier in over the last century. Even if a woman is able to reproduce at 10 or 12 it is very much not advisable as the skeletal development still is not complete until the late teens or twenties.

Thats true, I probably go to a small school by most people's standards, seeing as how it is only 1 building with 5 floors. 3,000 or 4,000 students, I forgot what it was.Melchior wrote: How do you know that they are equally sized and, so, comparable?

Yes. She was an 'early bloomer' as they say, had a woman's body at 11yrs old, got a daughter by the time she's 13.Schuyler Colfax wrote: Lady T., 6th grade really???
Then her 13yr old got pregnant, because *she* was an early bloomer. That child is something like 10yrs old now, I think, and if family breeds true she'll be another early bloomer. Hopefully she won't have a baby that soon... but I'd not be that shocked if she does.

The youngest mother was a Peruvian girl in the ...1940's? I believe... she had a birth defect-- her ovaries, uterus, all her baby-making parts were those of a mature adult woman, even though her physical body was that of an ordinary 6 year old girl. From the outside, there was no way to tell, and so whoever molested her probably thought that she was so young no way she'd get pregnant... and whoever it was get caught. But as (bad) luck would have it...

Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."
In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!
If all you want to do is have some harmless, mindless fun, go H3RE INST3ADZ0RZ!!

My first reaction to the idea of a high-school pregnancy pact is, does the state have a mechanism by which these girls can be defined as non-parental material, and can their babies be put up for adoption as soon as they're born?
Starting parenthood by doing something this flagrantly and purposefully selfish and stoopid, doesn't inspire a lot of confidence that any of them are likely to make decent mothers.
Why should someone who apparently wanted to conceive a toy/pet/accessory, be entrusted with a baby? Most of the time, no one finds out until it's too late. This time, the news is available in time to do something before the births...

What the fuck... That's really just plain absurd. Sex Ed should be taught at an earlier age then shouldn't it?LadyTevar wrote: Yes. She was an 'early bloomer' as they say, had a woman's body at 11yrs old, got a daughter by the time she's 13.

Yeah, but if I remember right, sex ed stuff at that age is really toned down. They should show straight up birth scenes and stuff like that, and show them video afterwards of the parents being kept up all night and the baby puking and crapping every other minute. Or STD stuff. And hand out contraception.Master of Cards wrote:They started sex ed at my school in 5th grade, and I had inklings of sex ed starting in 2rd. So the education isn't helping.

You want something that is cute and will love you unconditionally? Get a puppy. That way, nobody will bat an eyelash, nobody goes to prison, the puppy can take care of itself better than the baby ever could, will be much cheaper than the kid in the long run, the puppy can be trained and will actually listen to you, and if for some reason you need to get rid of it, there'll be much less hurdles, hoops, emotional turmoil and ostracization to go through.

Re: Teen Pregnancy pact
Without knowing anything about the size of the high school, it's really hard to make that kind of blanket statement. 4 pregnancies/year in a student body of 300 means a lot more than 4/year in a body of 4,000.Darth Ruinus wrote:Normally, the school has about four pregnancies per school year. What?
In my 4 years of high school 2 girls got pregnant. But these people have 4 pregnancies per year? Fuck, something is wrong in that school, and it started before this pregnancy pact thing.

That "I want a baby because a baby will love me unconditionally" business isn't restricted to high-schoolers.
I have an ex-girlfriend (in her late 20s) who thought that way, and used that exact phrase, and my wife has an acquaintance in her early 40s, who used that exact phrase, too (both of them too damned financially irresponsible, and irresponsible in every other way, to be good bets as parents, IMHO).
Unsurprisingly, both effectively wound up leaching off the state, to support themselves and their babies (and in one case, somehow, I don't know how, being paid to live in Paris for a year...)

Yeah, because that would stop teens from obsessing over sausage and tang. Trust me we know to use condoms and birth control if the girl doesn't want to get pregnant. The majority of teen pregnancies are accident. Of course that doesn't apply to the teens in this story.Darth Ruinus wrote:What the fuck... That's really just plain absurd. How big is your school. 2 girls getting pregnant is extremely small amount for 4 years of high school. I suspect that the rate is higher than 4 pregnancies. It probably means 4 pregnancy's that led to birth.Darth Ruinus wrote:Normally, the school has about four pregnancies per school year. What?

Oh yeah and something similary happened at my school with about 3 or 4 girls. It ain't that uncommon for a group of girls to all decide that they want to become pregnant at the same time.
