Dobson accuses Obama of distorting Bible

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - As Barack Obama broadens his outreach to evangelical voters, one of the movement's biggest names, James Dobson, accuses the likely Democratic presidential nominee of distorting the Bible and pushing a "fruitcake interpretation" of the Constitution.

The criticism, to be aired Tuesday on Dobson's Focus on the Family radio program, comes shortly after an Obama aide suggested a meeting at the organization's headquarters here, said Tom Minnery, senior vice president for government and public policy at Focus on the Family.

The conservative Christian group provided The Associated Press with an advance copy of the pre-taped radio segment, which runs 18 minutes and highlights excerpts of a speech Obama gave in June 2006 to the liberal Christian group Call to Renewal. Obama mentions Dobson in the speech.

"Even if we did have only Christians in our midst, if we expelled every non-Christian from the United States of America, whose Christianity would we teach in the schools?" Obama said. "Would we go with James Dobson's or Al Sharpton's?" referring to the civil rights leader.

Dobson took aim at examples Obama cited in asking which Biblical passages should guide public policy — chapters like Leviticus, which Obama said suggests slavery is OK and eating shellfish is an abomination, or Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, "a passage that is so radical that it's doubtful that our own Defense Department would survive its application."

"Folks haven't been reading their Bibles," Obama said.

Dobson and Minnery accused Obama of wrongly equating Old Testament texts and dietary codes that no longer apply to Jesus' teachings in the New Testament.

"I think he's deliberately distorting the traditional understanding of the Bible to fit his own worldview, his own confused theology," Dobson said.

"... He is dragging biblical understanding through the gutter."

Joshua DuBois, director of religious affairs for Obama's campaign, said in a statement that a full reading of Obama's speech shows he is committed to reaching out to people of faith and standing up for families. "Obama is proud to have the support of millions of Americans of faith and looks forward to working across religious lines to bring our country together," DuBois said.

Dobson reserved some of his harshest criticism for Obama's argument that the religiously motivated must frame debates over issues like abortion not just in their own religion's terms but in arguments accessible to all people.

He said Obama, who supports abortion rights, is trying to govern by the "lowest common denominator of morality," labeling it "a fruitcake interpretation of the Constitution."

"Am I required in a democracy to conform my efforts in the political arena to his bloody notion of what is right with regard to the lives of tiny babies?" Dobson said. "What he's trying to say here is unless everybody agrees, we have no right to fight for what we believe."

The program was paid for by a Focus on the Family affiliate whose donations are taxed, Dobson said, so it's legal for that group to get more involved in politics.

Last week, DuBois, a former Assemblies of God associate minister, called Minnery for what Minnery described as a cordial discussion. He would not go into detail, but said Dubois offered to visit the ministry in August when the Democratic National Convention is in Denver.

A possible Obama visit was not discussed, but Focus is open to one, Minnery said.

McCain also has not met with Dobson. A McCain campaign staffer offered Dobson a meeting with McCain recently in Denver, Minnery said. Dobson declined because he prefers that candidates visit the Focus on the Family campus to learn more about the organization, Minnery said.

Dobson has not backed off his statement that he could not in good conscience vote for McCain because of concerns over the Arizona senator's conservative credentials. Dobson has said he will vote in November but has suggested he might not vote for president.

Obama recently met in Chicago with religious leaders, including conservative evangelicals. His campaign also plans thousands of "American Values House Parties," where participants discuss Obama and religion, as well as a presence on Christian radio and blogs.
I just wanna see if I'm getting this right: Dobson is accusing Obama of misrepresenting the Bible by taking examples from Old Testament which Dobson claims does not fit with modern interpretation of the Bible, in other words for not picking and choosing just the parts they like and discarding the rest.

Obama is using the Old Testament to elaborate the problem resulting from trying to choose which version of Christianity, and Dobson points fingers at him for not using his version of Christianity?

It sounds kinda nuts to me.

Or like he's (accidentally) proving Obama's point for him. Heh.
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

If this situation were to be any more ironic, it'd sink to the bottom of the dead sea ( Yes lame joke involving iron). These evangelical types don't ever seem to notice that their kneejerk responses only serves to prove the opposing party's point.

Because primitive supernatural beliefs are a natural outgrowth of human brain structure, and systematized religion uses these to organize communities and increase not only their own memetic reproductive success, but provide simple thought-free but often useful(within the context of their evolution) canned solutions to human problems?

I mean... if we were to wipe out every single religion tomorrow, they would probably re-form spontaneously within a generation or two, and start spreading and diversifying again, like organisms diversifying into a new niche.

Tradition holds a lot of value for some people. That's why Scientology is regarded as a joke while Christianity is relatively untouchable.

Also, life's easier with an omnipotent father figure who'll be looking out for you. You avoid a lot of the scariness of mortality, and you can avoid big questions by deferring them to some divine poppycock.

Since when have fundies have problems with killing babies? Just three days ago I had a fundie saying genocide can be OK simply because a wise and loving God said so in the Bible.

But that's all part of the Old Testament, which has no standing with Jesus' teachings. So please look the other way as if it never happened.......

chapters like Leviticus, which Obama said suggests slavery is OK and eating shellfish is an abomination
Suggests?
Leviticus 19:20
And whosoever lieth carnally with a woman, that is a bondmaid, betrothed to an husband, and not at all redeemed, nor freedom given her; she shall be scourged; they shall not be put to death, because she was not free.

Leviticus 22:11
If the priest buy any soul with his money....

Leviticus 25:39
And if thy brother that dwelleth by thee be waxen poor, and be sold unto thee....

Leviticus 25:44-46
Thy bond-men and thy bond-maids which thou shalt have, shall be of the heathen that are round about you: of them shall ye buy bond-men and bond-maids. Moreover, of the children of the strangers that do sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are with you, which they begat in your land. And they shall be your possession. And ye shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them for a possession, they shall be your bond-man forever.
Suggest?
Leviticus 11:9-12
These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat. And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you: They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcases in abomination. Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you.

Something I always dig about that "abomination" business regarding shellfish, is that the blue dye traditionally used to manufacture prayer shawls - a dye required by tradition - is derived from one of those "abominable" critters, something they used to call a hilazon.

Abominable when it comes to eating, but not so abominable, when it some to making colorful cloth to wrap yourself in, while praying.

Nothing new here. It's the usual whackjob evangelical talking shit about the Democrats. It will be interesting to see how they change their tactics though; saying the wrong thing about Obama could easily bring accusations of racism or intolerance.
