Discussion and Debate
What are your reasons behind discussion and debate? Here are the reasons that I participate in a debate/discussion:
1) Increase the knowledge of myself and others
2) Spread and gain new ideas
3) Learn the 'other side' of the story
4) Learn more about others and myself

2) Help others do the same by providing them with ideas/info
3) Get new ideas for additions/corrections/improvements to my site
The reasons for my two websites (the creationism one and this one) are similar in that regard, although one is obviously a "real-life" subject while the other is not.

Agreed. Frankly, I debate because it's fun. It requires me to use my mind more than most things in RL, but it's a safe and comfortable way of having arguments over things that are really unimportant in terms of the real world.Sir Sirius wrote:I'd add "Have fun!" to that list.

Mind you, it's more fun when the person you're arguing with actually tries to debate, instead of just repeating himself ad nauseum. This is the problem with people like Darkstar, most creationists, etc.
For a time, I considered sparing your wretched little planet Cybertron.

Well, to increase my knowledge and expand my perspective, especially in sci-fi subjects like SW and ST.
But ultimately, for the FUN of it! That's why I never really care about post count or such... (sounds like a lame excuse? Guilty as charge.) After all, this is just a hobby. Besides, sometimes lurking could be as fun as participating itself.

Take your own advice then, the idea of someone (especially pathetic n00bz)coming to SDNet and trolling like you live under a bridge.

Ali's hardly a newbie. Take a look at his join date. Then be aware he's also an ASVS regular.Darth Fanboy wrote:Take your own advice then, the idea of someone (especially pathetic n00bz)coming to SDNet and trolling like you live under a bridge.

The first and primary reason I take part in these debates is because its fun. Number two and three would have to be because its an intelectual excercise and I learn things about science.

I like debating. I always have been a warsie and i was a fan of Star Trek untill Voyager. The main reason i joined here was that i used to read Wongs hate Mail page and laugh my ass off, though even i would admit he can come off kinda arrogant. And i remember thinking i wanted to be involved in the same kinda debate, though not so long winded.

I've always enjoyed debate. I took a couple courses in high school. Managed to convince people of things that they really should have known better about (managed to argue a bunch of middle-class Americans into agreeing that socialism is superior to capitalism). Now I'm in the Student Government at college and quite frankly I'm enjoying that too, even if I'm usually outvoted (I don't agree with big government...unfortunately, most of my compatriots apparently do). It's just a fun thing for me, and I like to get my own misperceptions corrected (though the burn marks do take a while to wear off ).

There were no counter-counters. We wrote up the essay, someone copied it and sent it to Mike, Mike responded, end of discussion.
