Time Warner May Try To Clean Up DC Comics

Post by Superman »

With Comic-Con fast approaching (July 24-27) and all the Hollywood studios getting ready, I understand that Warner Bros has been nervously monitoring the deteriorating situation at its subsidiary DC Comics. There could be a major shake-up -- especially if Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes keeps cleaning house inside the Big Media corp. There's a lot of chatter, from comic book circles like io9.com to trade media like Publishers Weekly, that DC Comics Senior VP and Executive Editor Dan DiDio, who oversees the DC Universe line of superheroes, is in major trouble. I don't pretend to know all the ins and outs of the comic book culture. But my own reporting, and others' coverage, show the following:

The problem isn't just that, under DiDio's leadership, fanboys are disappointed with the directions of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and other characters. (How dopey of DiDio to come out with a new series Decisions this September where the superheroes take political stands timed to the election.) Little wonder that fanboys are selling "Dan DiDio Must Die" t-shirts. But also average sales of the DCU line are down more than 20% from a year ago, and DiDio has lost a big chunk of existing readers in a year while deliberately failing to reach out to new ones.

But the biggest bad news is that DC's much hyped Summer 2008 release Final Crisis, the 7-issue miniseries, isn't the huge hit it was supposed to be. Comic Book Resources reviewed, "This isn't a disaster just yet, but six more issues of this caliber and this could spell the end of the sales power for a company event at DC Comics. Final Crisis, indeed." Not to mention those misleading full-page DC Comics ads promoting Final Crisis by referring to an upcoming "Batman R.I.P.'' storyline. That could have unleashed a box office backlash against Warner Bros' all-important The Dark Knight release next month. ("We can't kill him during a big movie year,'' DiDio finally made clear.)

With DC Universe so much a part of Warner Bros' bottom line, getting DC Comics back on track has to be a top priority. For one thing, the movie studio's biggest DC characters remain in development limbo -- Superman, Wonder Woman, the Justice League. Only Batman has an ongoing live action franchise. But whose fault is that? Warner Bros Pictures Group prez Jeff Robinov and Warner Bros prez/COO Alan Horn (who still retains greenlight authority and therefore has to share the blame for this) remain paralyzed by indecision, chaotically starting and stopping work on scripts for the biggest DC characters. Meanwhile, Marvel is about to exploit the hell out of its characters, primo or not. Right after Iron Man's success, Marvel Studios announced an ultra-ambitious film development slate through 2011, culminating in an “Avengers-Themed Summer”, introducing a Captain America film and then uniting heroes Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America and Thor in a single film. Heck, if I were Bewkes, I'd shake up Warner Bros as well as DC Comics.

To add insult to injury, Marvel's Secret Invasion comic book was #1 in May, while DC's Final Crisis was only #2. Worst of all, DC had only three comics in that month's top 10 best-sellers. As one Internet commenter opined on io9.com: "DC needs to make this move just to show that they do in fact care about their product, and appease fan boy rage. Even if the higher-ups at TW really like Mr. DiDio's work, the sales numbers and overall editorial inconsistancies under his recent tenure has caused public perception to view him as being incompetent." DiDio, who took over in 2004, can't be happy his current contract expires soon. Or that Jimmy Palmiotti is being handicapped as his replacement. (Palmiotta is currently an exclusive writer for DC Comics and formerly the co-founder of Event Comics and co-head of Marvel's Marvel Knights imprint with friend and current Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada. Fanboys also suggest Joey Cavalieri, a veteran of both comics companies, should be considered.) Now the question is whether DiDio will exit before Comic-Con, or after, or at all -- and how much of a distraction this will be at the confab.

Interesting read. As a media corporation, Time Warner is one of the biggest players on the block. I'm a bit surprised that the geniuses behind their movie production company have only been able to get out two Batman movies and a mediocre Superman film (in recent years anyway). Everything else seems to get scrapped before they can get it off the ground.

They need to find whoever came up with (and is running) Marvel Studios and steal his playbook FAST.

I've suspected for some time that Marvel's recent movie success would help to motivate DC to get its shit together. Marvel has been pulling itself up by its boot straps (and just barely; their shitty management has almost bankrupted the company), and it seems that DC just isn't trying as hard as it should be. It took Marvel years to get to a point where they could build a studio and put out a movie like "Iron Man." Warner/DC has the resources and money to make a movie like that at any time; they just haven't. I think it really comes down to shitty management. When compared to Marvel and their new movie company, Warner doesn't have much of an excuse.

Of course sales have been going down in the last year; we got hit with the utter piece of crap that was Countdown to Final Crisis. But yeah, DC really needs to get it's shit together and Didio getting cut loose would probably help; I've spoken with him at WonderCon 2007 and 2008 and both times, he's struck me as a blowhard.

I don't know-- face it, even the worst of the Batman movies has not been as mind-numblingly bad as both Fantastic Four flops and that first Hulk. Marvel only really has one titan in the ring, and that's Spider-Man.

Iron Man isn't a titan then? It was only a few million short of beating Spider-Man in terms of opening ticket sales.

Now wait a second Coyote, neither FF movie was a flop they both made a hefty profit easily, and they were fairly entertaining too. Or maybe it's because i like seeing Jessica Alba in a skintight catsuit, whatever, but they werent "mind numbingly bad". The original Hulk was more boring than "bad" per se.

And dude, seriously? Batman and Robin? Were you being sarcastic? :?

As I recall the only reason Fantastic Four got a sequel at all is because of DVD sales. The ticket sales and reviews in general were rather poor for it.

Not so...

It cost 100 million to make and made back 330 million, domestic and overseas.

I liked the FF movies as well. They just need to keep doing what they're doing at M.Studios.

Perhaps not a flop, but on the other hand it hasn't even come close to approaching the success of Spiderman or Iron Man. Even Batman Begins fell considerably short of those two.

I never said it was as huge as Spiderman.

BUT, calling it a "flop" is completely inaccurate.

Personally, I loved both Fantastic Four films and the original Hulk movie. Bought them all, and will likely buy any others if they're the same quality. Buying the new Hulk is a given of course. 8)

Commercially successful, sure-- but they were downright painful to watch, particularly the first one. The lines, the dialogue, the writing... awful stuff. I mean, the whole big first superhero scene in FF-1 was to rescue people from a massive bridge accident that they themselves caused. :?

Iron Man was awesome, but will it be able to maintain momentum? They announced a sequel, but apparantly didn't tell teh Director, and they're trying to get squirrely with his pay, last I heard. This does not bode well for Iron Man's ability to maintain momentum, so the jury is out.

DC has dropped the ball with letting Superman wither on the vine; but Batman's franchise is strong. And, yeah-- the worst Batman is still better than the best Fantastic Four, so far. The FF characters as they are portrayed in the movies so far are utterly unlikeable. I do not say this lightly, in comics, Spider-Man and the FF were my favorites and, in fact, gave me reason to keep a tenuous interest in superhero comics at all when I was at one time ready to trash the whole genre. I'm quite disappointed with the FF movies.

Woah now, when did you last watch Batman and Robin?

I can understand being more disappointed in FF if you are a big FF fan but I can't comprehend B&R being better than the FF films (or 95% of films for that matter).

Well, i'm with you on this one. All of it.

I personally never saw why The Hulk caught so much flak, it wasnt "bad", it wasnt Batman and Robin by any stretch of the imagination, it was just...slow. The pacing ruined it, but if that had just been cleared up with some minor editing, it would have been MUCH better recieved.

As for the acting in FF and FF2...i dunno. That's subjective i guess, i mean i had no problem with it and i actually found the bridge scene rather funny, in some ways. The movie had some pacing problems too--brevity this time, instead of sluggishness--but it was still entertaining to me. But that's subjective too.

Iron Man will maintain at least some momentum, and probably make a considerable profit, on name power alone. Plus, many people probably want to see how the metaplot crossing between the movies continues. As it is it's shaping up to be a DCAU style deal: a new continuity created from whole cloth, with tight continunity rules. And if this works, well, it'll probably be a first for movies. Personally i'm excited just thinking about the idea of a movie-only full-on new continuity split between multiple series. It's like the Ultimate Marvel TV series i always wanted. :D

It's really too bad about the FF franchise; it's supposed to be a story about two super geniuses and their not-super-genius brother and friend, not four vapid supermodels. :P At this point Marvel's best move IMHO is to block it into Development Hell until they get the rights back, and then relaunch in-continuity with Ironman-Hulk-Etc.

On topic though, I'm really glad my initial thoughts on seeing the title were wrong. At a glance I believed it might have to do with reducing support for Vertigo and DC's weirder titles under pressure from the typical freedom-hating crowd. A quality-boosting editorial shakedown is infinitely preferable.

Michael Chicklis is a supermodel?

Or does the lamer joke not work if we think about it.

No seriously, how are they vapid? Johnny Storm is supposed to be vapid, but the rest of them were, lets be honest, fairly on target: Reed is a nerd, The Thing is Michael Chicklis and Invisible Girl is the only one with any common sense. So far, pretty on the mark.

Unless you're talking about Ultimate Fantastic Four, Reed is the only super genius on the Fantastic Four.

I do agree that they should try and reboot the franchise. I hope that in a reboot they would move the Fantastic Four closer to its sci-fi roots. The previous movies were just standard super hero stuff, but the Fantastic Four work best as sci-fi adventurers, not as super heroes.

Since Spiderman 4 and 5 are on the table, with no reboot, along witha Silver Surfer movie and a second Ghost Rider i believe they're going to try and fit the previous movies into teh new continuity which is perfectly fine by me.

I tend not to like reboots, so far The Incredible Hulk and Ultimate Marvel are the only two i've found to be good, off the top of my head.

DC isn't all bad.

Just look at the Green Lantern titles right now, they're possibly the best they've ever been. Justice Society is also well worth a good read.

There isn't going to be any cross continuity between the Marvel Studios films and the others.

So all the films thus far made, excluding Iron Man and Inc. Hulk, will remain seperate.

Well what hand did Marvel Studios have in the FF films and the 2003 Hulk, hmm?

Oh that's right, as much as they had in the X-Men films or the Spider-Man films, that is to say, not a whole lot - and they didn't profit a whole lot off the movie royalties of those, either.
