Yes. People didn't know anything about it back then, and the people telling them not to do it were mostly government right-wingers.
Of course not, but like you said, you are foreigners. You have no ability to effect change in our system. This man, who had widespread influence and a voice people listened to in our society could, and he chose not to.
Way to miss the point, moron. The point is that one's personal participation in politics is totally IRRELEVANT to one's criticisms of those politics. It's a classic ad-hominem fallacy. And don't give me that bullshit about effecting change; Carlin effected more change by talking than a person like you ever would by voting.
Yeah. That was a refernece to my previous post. Column A being that his views are in line with the majority of this board and Column B being that he was a genuinely good person. NOT that I think they are good or even valid criticisms, especially not from me.
If you agree that they're retarded criticisms, then why are you defending them?
havokeff wrote:There you go being all omniscient again. No, what I was referring to was my own recollection of the memorial threads I have read and the fact that even the most well respected person seems to get one person that says something negative about them. Not the bashing that so many truly deserve.
Examples?

*sigh* RIP.

I did catch one of his live shows. He was easily up there as one of THE best live comedians.

To say nothing of what he did in terms of social commentary and speech.

Truly a great loss.

I remember the first I saw of George Carlin. A very short clip of him saying, "You never see someone taking a shit while running at full speed." It was followed by someone taking a shit while running at full speed. I think it was an excerpt from Jackass.

I think you are thinking of Cheech and Chong.
Actually, I was thinking of his "Jane" bit. One of the lesser-known ones, but still brilliant. It was about the phone call no guy wants to get.

"George, this is Jane."
"Jane who?"
"Jane. You met me at a night club about ... six to eight weeks ago. You said I was a 'really good sport'."
"Ooooh Jane! Well how are you Jane?"
"Pregnant! And I'm about to jump out the window!"
"Say, you are a good sport!"

Well really, what would you criticize him for? Previous memorial threads for religious leaders, political leaders who were once white separatists, etc. provided some rather obvious targets for criticism.
Beyond that, in this particular venue, George Carlin pretty much embodies the traits this this board holds in high regard: rational thought, irreverent treatment of religion and mockery of stupid people.

Rest in Peace, George. And for christ's sake, someone like him stand up and take the torch.

Just ran into the "Jane" bit. Hysterical.
I had a Bill Maher quote here. But fuck him for his white privelegy "joke".

All the rest? Too long.

I think the best I've ever seen him is his routine on suicide "Wallmart's having a sale on rope this week....I could put it on the credit card..."

I hope all of that gets put up on demand for a while because I already know I'm not going to be able to watch those specials on those nights.

I wonder if that speaks more to his beliefs being mostly in line with the overall beliefs of the board or if it truly is rare to loose a good person.

I don't think a dude like George Carlin would want us all getting misty eyes and depressed. 71 is a damn good age to get to. I'm glad to have seen and heard his work. If he hadn't have blazed the trail stand up comedy would be very different.

Fuck that RIP shit, through his comedy Carlin lives forever. Party on Rufus.

He would have knocked himself off sooner if he'd had the time.

Caustic, sarcastic, intolerant of fools, and funny as hell. We've lost one of the greatest comedians the world has known. It's too bad he ran over kittens with lawnmowers, or he'd be an example of what we should all strive for.

Kidding, obviously.
