Ground Squirrels Test Positive for Plague in San Diego
Last Update: 1:43 pm

SAN DIEGO, Ca. -- County Vector Control officials are warning campers to avoid contact with ground squirrels containing plague.

Two squirrels at the Doane Valley Campground on Palomar Mountain have tested positive for a bacterial disease of wild rodents.

The disease, known as plague can be transmitted to humans through the bite of infected fleas.

So far there have been no reports of locally acquired human cases in San Diego but the flea population is being monitored and extreme measures have been taken to reduce the potential for human exposure.

The campground is warning campers with signs posted in the areas where the plague has been confirmed.
Yes, it's the plague. Clearly, God is angry about the California Supreme Court legalizing gay marriage.

Well. Shit.

I don't live near California, but in case of spreading, what are the symptoms I should watch for?

Bubonic plague has been present in the rodents in the American southwest probably since it was introduced. According to the CDC annually in the U.S. there are about 10-15 cases of people picking up plague.

So it has nothing to do with gay marri-hey, who are you and why are you hitting me with that book? Ow!

Its other name is "The Black Death".

This actually isn't new. Rats and other rodents in California have been testing positive for Bubonic Plague for decades, causing some to theorize it arrived with the Spanish Settlers.
Centers for Disease Control wrote:Does plague occur naturally?
Yes. The World Health Organization reports 1,000 to 3,000 cases of plague worldwide every year. An average of 5 to 15 cases occur each year in the western United States. These cases are usually scattered and occur in rural to semi-rural areas. Most cases are of the bubonic form of the disease. Naturally occurring pneumonic plague is uncommon, although small outbreaks do occur. Both types of plague are readily controlled by standard public health response measures.

Swollen nymph nodes are one of the most common symptoms of the plague, apparently.
70% of victims die in 4-7 dies. The two other forms of the plague, pneumonic and septicemic, resulted after a patient with the bubonic plague developed pneumonia or blood poisoning.

His dying screams turned the advance into a panic."'

This needs to be in Armageddon.

God releases the killer plague on the world, and we respond with antibiotics and go "huh. Well, I guess this summer plague season was a bit more active than usual."

Plague: Yersinia pestis, a.k.a. "The Black Death". It comes in three forms: bubonic (grotesque swellings of lymph nodes in groin and armpits), septicemic (this is where "black death" comes from - the skin darkens from sub-dermal bleeding) and pneumonic. The symptoms are:

* Bubonic plague
o Incubation period of 2-6 days, when the bacteria is actively replicating in lymph nodes
o Universally a general lack of energy
o Fever
o Headache and chills occur suddenly at the end of the incubation period. From this point the infection is resolved or lethal.
o Swelling of lymph nodes resulting of buboes, this is the classic sign of bubonic plague

* Septicemic plague
o Hypotension (low blood pressure)
o Hepatosplenomegaly (enlarged spleen)
o Delirium
o Seizures in children
o Shock
o Universally a general lack of energy
o Fever
o Symptoms of Bubonic or Pneumonic Plague, not always present

* Pneumonic plague
o Fever
o Chills
o Cough
o Chest pain
o Dyspnea
o Hemoptysis
o Lethargy
o Hypotension
o Shock
o Symptoms of bubonic or septicemic plague, not always present

Pretty much, if you catch this you'll feel like shit, feel really weak, and have a high fever. Treatment these days is multiple antibiotics which, if started early enough, are usually successful. You don't have to die from this, but it's still fucking serious.

The plague has been in the southwest US for centuries. Prairie dogs are a major vector, but really any rodents are susceptible.

I live in Yosemite, we have fires, plague watch for the squirrels, and oh, Mammoth Lakes had a 4.5 just sunday, and is decades past due for an eruption....

hopefully my standing joke about it going off on 4th of July doesn't happen.

If it does, remember the strange, silly poster here, when you watch lava and ash covering the Sierra Nevadas

I remember people telling me that the local squirrels might have the plague when I was 7 or 8. Skunks and bats too. Maybe it was mostly hysteria up until now, but I don't think anyone here will actually be surprised. :D

I wonder if rabbits have them as well?

There are a whole bunch of wild ones living right next to my yard.
Turns out that a five way cross over between It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the Ali G Show, Fargo, Idiocracy and Veep is a lot less funny when you're actually living in it.

Actually when you look at it, I think God is punishing the entire U.S for California legalizing gay marriage. You got fires here in California, massive floods in the Midwest, and scorching temperatures on the East Coast.

...and a nice mild summer here in Oregon, with happy-looking clouds and temperatures in the 70s. This must be God's chosen land!

That doesn't work. San Francisco hasn't been swept away by a tsunami yet, nor has Gojira risen from the depths to ravage the Castro district until some plucky heroes convince him to go back to sleep.
