DC Comics MMO? Yep.

Post by Superman »

f you are looking for an action-based MMO to explore the worlds of DC Comics’ superheroes and villains, Sony Online’s Austin studio is working on giving it to you in DC Universe Online.

Working in collaboration, comic veterans Jim Lee (the game’s Executive Creative Director), Ale Garza, Carlos D’Anda, and Scott Iwahashi, are teamed with EverQuest developers, Chris Cao and Shawn Lord, to create the game which is slotted for a December 2009 release, IGN reports.

With an eye towards being both PC and next generation console based, Lee describes the genre as a “kick-ass hybrid between a traditional MMO and a first-person action console game.”

Check out the recently released screen shots and the video of concept art for the project.
Here ya go, bitches

Check out the screenshots. I can't tell if the Joker looks cool or like shit. I don't play too many games these days, but I might try this one.

Joker looks kinda crap but I hope they improve it a bit. Overall the general idea isn't too bad but their execution on his design needs work.

I wonder just what role you're going to play though?

Just like every other game of this type, you'll design your own character from a template. The copyrighted characters will be in-game characters, like how "Galaxies" handled Vader, Palpatine, etc.

I imagine so, but what kind of characters? Civvies or is the DCU about to get overrun with a fuckload of metas (well assuming it takes off well enough)?

If you watch that video link on the site, you can see how some will be designed. I imagine you can choose between tights or civvies.

I'm just wondering if Warner is getting their lawyers lined up for when Marvel inevitably sues over people making characters who look a bit too Marvel-esque.

The Joker looks like it's some horrible horrible Joker Mask on his face...
not like the Joker we've come to know in the various forms of media..they could have gone with a Timm-verse style Joker design, and it'd be cool...

Not sure I like the "Realistic" look their giving the gameworld....maybe I'm just to attached to the Timm-verse designs, but I would have liked that art direction awhole lot better than this.

I MAY give it a go...I'm not much for MMOG's much lately.

Oh, and Supes, Marvel was gonna do their own Marvel-verse MMOG awhile back, but I think it went belly-up.

LOL...SOE doing a Heroes MMO. This promises to go well...*snerk*.

Honestly, a hero MMO is just hard to pull off because of the whole design concepts behind it in terms of grinding and questing become really odd. I mean can you imagine hundreds of guys in tight being told by Batman to take down the Joker by going in 5-10-25-40-72 man groups?

Hmm. I think I'll be sticking with City of Heroes. That just looks... wrong, somehow.
According to wikipedia, "the Mohorovičić discontinuity is the boundary between the Earth's crust and the mantle."
According to Starbound, it's a problem solvable with enough combat drugs to turn you into the Incredible Hulk.

The people behind City of Hero's have moved on
To work on the Marvel MMO, or they had at last word, there's all sorts of things flying around saying it might have been cancelled. But the people who made CoV/CoH are now off doing other projects.

Not impressed, I'll stick with COH or maybe Champions online when it comes out.

...This can't possibly lose! It's going to be ultra-win! it'll be Eve 2! Everquest redux! Superdey duperdy awesome!

Oh wait. No, it's going to suck for sure. but it looks like they're too far along to kill the project. Another example of sony grabbing handfuls of feces and throwing it at the wall to find out what sticks. Leave this shovelware on the shelves.

They're working on Champions Online; they sold Co* to get the capital to buy the setting outright. It looks pretty damn good at this point - they're trying to make it even more customizable than City of Heroes was, you even get to create your own arch-nemesis (hey, just like Batman did!)

Holy shit, Joker looks terrible. It wouldn't be so bad if they went with cel-shading or something less "realistic", but his head doesn't jive with the the other models at all.

Reading this thread I found out about the existence of Champions Online.... I really wondered what was up with the whole selling of the CoX IP to NCSoft, and I'm glad to see why they did it.

To be honest, I like City of Heroes/Villians a lot, but was hoping for either an engine/gameplay upgrade, or a CoH2 release, and Champìons Online might fill that spot. Good, good.

As for a DC-based MMO.... I have the same reservations as with any big-franchise MMO. Their drive to rake in the cash, and to keep true to whatever guidelines they have, will probably clash with the player's tendency to do whatever they like... Star Wars Galaxies (and the NGE) and lately Age of Conan should be heeded as examples of how not to treat a franchise with a loyal fanbase.

Time will tell.

They'll probably have some fucked explanation about how the chemicals that screwed up his face and mind deformed his chin as well. Christ, he could kill someone with that thing.

I remember PA talking about this a few years back, with the suggestion that the art style be along the lines of the old 30's-50's cell shade art to both give it a distinctive look and allow for more people on a given server to make it really MMO. Looking at that craptasic Joker, I still think that was a good idea.

Looks like they just based the Joker design off Tim Sale's artwork.

Suddenly I conjured an image of a 40-man raid trying to beat.... Superman.

Unfortunately, since it's an MMO, they might actually have a chance to suceed.
