Dr. Drew: Tom Cruise is mental, and Scientology is a cult

Post by Superman »

In an upcoming interview with Playboy, Dr. Drew Pinsky, currently hosting "Celebrity Rehab," and "Loveline," used Tom Cruise as an example of having a mental illness. Dr. Drew is a board certified internist (internal medicine physician), addiction medicine specialist, and Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. Here is what he had to say:
"A lot of people in the public eye who behave strangely have mental illness we can learn from, and much of it is based on childhood trauma, without a doubt. Take a guy like Tom Cruise. Why would somebody be drawn into a cultish kind of environment like Scientology? To me, that's a function of a very deep emptiness and suggests serious neglect in childhood - maybe some abuse, but mostly neglect," Dr. Drew says.
Of course, Cruise immediately mobilized his lawyers, and Dr. Drew caved in and apologized. Oh well. Dr. Drew is fucking awesome, even if that wasn't the most professional statement to make. He's the only person in the media who called out the proverbial 'elephant in the room;" that being that Tom Cruise is a Grade A whackjob.

Would he have said the same thing about a prominent Catholic celebrity?

Dr Drew is not really a reliable source either

Example?

I don't know that he was quoting any literature here, just offering a diagnosis... sort of.

Which is not something you can do from the public image someone presents. You sorta need to sit and talk with someone face to face for quite a while to make an actual and effective diagnosis.

Dr. Drew is also vehemently opposed to anal sex and a proponent of penial circumcision. I've heard him pontificate about both several times on the radio.

Strange, most people seem quite comfortable asserting Hannibal Lector is a total wackjob, despite it being impossible to sit down and have a face to face with him.

Besides, if all you do is act like a nutcase in public, people would be justified in calling you one.

Not judging Cruise here but Dr Drew....You cannot in fifteen minutes dispense magical solutions to people's problems.

Did he do that? Seems to me he offered a possible etiology of the seemingly odd behaviors Cruise has exhibited over the past few years.

Actually, Galvatron is right, but I don't know that he's "vehemently against" anal sex... He's stated that the trauma to the anal sphincter muscle from anal sex could lead to incontinence later in life.

I've heard him warn callers that it'll prolapse their rectum. And he lists the usual "medical benefits" of penial circumcision.

There have been many cases of rectal prolapse from anal sex; I actually learned that in a pathophysiology class I had to take.

I've heard him advocate circumcision too. Unfortunately, there is still a large number of doctors who advocate it.

Isn't he a Jew? That would explain his pro-circumcision stance.

Yeah, but you would have also learned that more common causes of rectal prolapse are constipation, childbirth, and aging. I suspect Dr. Drew didn't mention that.

Perhaps he'd have a better arguement if he pointed out anal sex might increase the chances of rectal prolapse.

I mean let's face it, the rectum didn't evolve to be penetrated, and those who love the practice and are smart about it know you need to take a lot of artifical measures to ensure it goes well.

He's also said that this recent rise in anal sex among young people will result in a boom in the medical treatment of rectal problems for patients in their ~40s that they ordinarily wouldn't experience until their ~70s.

(couldn't edit my post)

I'd also point out that constipation is a bad thing, and aging and the problems asociated with childbirth are two things that we aren't exactly fond of either.

My wife and I saw Dr. Drew speak a few years ago at Chico State. I specifically remember a female student asking him how to make anal sex easier, and he suggested trying a lot more lube. In all fairness, he's not against anal sex, I think what he often says on the radio is exactly what Galvatron is saying; that he believes there will be an increasing number of younger people who need treatment for rectal problems. Since repeated rectal prolapse becomes permanent, he believes it's a concern.

Just found the update. Cruise's lawyer said:
"This unqualified television performer who is obviously just looking for notoriety is so grotesquely unprofessional as to pretend to diagnose Tom and others without ever meeting them. He seems to be spewing the absurdity that all Scientologists are mentally ill. The last time we heard garbage like this was from Joseph Goebbels."
Dr. Drew's lawyer responded with:
"Although Mr. Fields's intent is clearly to slander and discredit Dr. Drew, under no circumstances is Dr. Drew making a blanket diagnosis about Scientology nor Mr. Cruise whom he does not know. Dr. Drew was simply using Mr. Cruise as an example of someone who is recognizable to help the public understand. Again, Dr. Drew meant him no harm."
It would be ironic if they sued Cruise's lawyer on the basis of slander for comparing Dr. Drew to a Nazi.

I actually picked up that issue of Playboy at the airport yesterday. (It also had a really great piece by Bill Maher about religion. And oh yeah, naked shots of Cindy Margolis.) The interview was pretty lengthy, and he has some interesting stuff to say about rehab and such; I don't think he's a quack. But he thinks that anal sex is only popular because porno is corrupting our youth, basically, which smells of bullshit to me. You might as well argue the same thing about titty-fucking, since it's glamorized in porn as well.

The truth is that it doesn't take porn to introduce a young guy to anal sex, titty-fucking and oral sex. These are all things that men independently discover, like the "Come on baby, I'll just put the tip in" move.

Of course; you slather on lube as if it's going out of style. I do know that there are certain people out there who use little or no lube (that is particularly common in porn), or who stick gigantic dildos up there, but that's just fucking crazy.

His claim that participants in anal sex will create a boom in rectal problems sounds like bullshit. The average penis is no bigger than a solid bowel movement, and it is far better lubricated, assuming lube is being used.
