mobile broadband

Post by dragon »

I was wondering if anyone has tried mobile broadband as Telecom here in Germany are offering a flatrate unlimited and the area I'll be at will have between 500k and 2mbs download. Since I do a lot of traveling between the various bases here in germany I figured it would be a better idea than getting a DSL line put into the house.

Now for the most part it will be for work but with a decent connection I should be able to due some gaming.

Depending on network density and total amount of traffic, it might work, but for the most part, mobile broadband has crappy speeds. Mobile 2 mbps is NOT in any way equivalent to DSL 2 mbps, because in case of traffic congestion, speeds get cut and voice traffic always takes precedence over data. 3G networks also have breathing cells, meaning that if traffic increases, the cell contracts to a smaller size and people on the edges of it will drop to 2G network.

It's good for email and websurfing, but not at all reliable for network gaming. At least that's the situation here, but it might be different in Germany. Also, find out what device it uses for connection and whether your laptop is compatible. The Vodafone E220 USB modem made by Huawei isd a very common device both here and elsewhere and it doesn't always play nice with all computers. Finding out that it's incompatible with your machine can be a real chore to do and more hassle to straighten it out afterward.

How secure are these as I know sprint mobile broadband offers some degree of protection?

Secure in what way? They use the GSM network for data transmission, so it's not like breaking into a generic unprotected WLAN. So worrying about somebody casually eavesdropping on your network traffic is a waste of time unless they have something installed on your machine that would allow them to do so. Your computer obviously should have antivirus, antimalware and firewall installed to prevent infections.
