Doctor Horrible premieres (Joss Whedon + NPH)

Post by Durandal »

Slashdot turned me on to this little masterwork by Joss Whedon. The first episode of the three-part mini-series premiered today, and the main site (doctorhorrible.com) was overloaded. (doctorhorrible.net, an unofficial site with a trailer, is still up though.) But you can still buy a season pass for all 3 episodes off iTunes for $4, which is what I did.

The first episode is hilarious. Neil Patrick Harris nails his role, and Nathan Fillion is just awesome. The musical numbers are a lot of fun too.

If it's worth paying money for, then I'll wait for the eventual DVD release.

I shall watch it and post impressions soonish.

Joss Whedon's working with Fillion again? I'm definitely watching this.

Just watched the flash version (I'm sure I'll buy the DVD when it comes out) and I have to say that it is damn funny, even if it did get off to a bit of a slow start.

If everyone did that, then the show will get cancelled...

sort of like Firefly.

Yeah sure, because I'm paying extra money on my cable bill to watch Firefly.

Wait, that isn't analogous at all.

Act II is up now too.

This show is absolute gold!

I don't think they'll go this direction because it wouldn't jive with the show's vibe thus far, but could you imagine the character development and drama they could pull if Dr. Horrible's plan to kill Captain Penis backfired and he ended up getting into the Evil League because of the impressive elimination of a hero's girlfriend?

Just watched the first act last night, and I'm thoroughly hooked.
I'm not sure, but I think that I actually have the exact same welding goggles that Dr. Horrible wears, just a different color...I haven't been able to spot any differences.

I watched the first two acts online I have to say I love it. The best bit was the after video when he says "Turns out Captain Hammer and the NYPD also watch this blog" after he details his evil plans on the previous video.

NPH looks like a convincing killer when he makes his choice there. It is kinda unnerving. Guy has better acting chops then I figured.

Well, he has been acting since he was, what, 15? And he's (holy shit) 35 now, though he seriously doesn't look it.

Apparently he just got an Emmy nod as well.

Wait...they can give Emmy awards for online-only television shows? :wtf:
I thought that was a nice nod to Young Frankenstein, too.

I finally got around to watching these.

This is what Joss Whedon does when given considerable freedom regarding content?

This is what he hires Nathan Fillion for?

By god, give this man a million dollars and an unregulated half hour on TV a week.

NPH is great. He once did an awesome job on Law & Order as a mild-mannered cannibal.

Hilarious, to echo previous comments. "Turns out Captain Hammer and the NYPD are among are viewers" was far and above my favorite part.

That was great - I love Bad Horse. Bad Horse. The thoroughbred of Sin!

Clearly, a 3 part mini-series will leave us gagging for more, but at the same time, a whole season of it seems unlikely to maintain steam. This might be the perfect candidate for a BBC style 6 episode series, rather than a US 20-24 episode series.

Finished watching 3, and I was sad.

Very well done, acting and otherwise.

Yeah, I wasn't quite expecting that ending. But what was I thinking expecting a status quo ending (status quo for the genre (is there even an actual genre for this?) that is)?
