PvP is all about gear, far moreso than PVE. In PvE you can get away with being undergeared if you're a skilled player and make the most of your cooldowns and trinkets, and exploit any particular weaknesses the mob may have. Not so in PvP.
PvP is all about burst damage and survivability. When I first got my Ret Paladin to 70 he was utterly useless on anyone with any deal of stacked Resilience; I'm talking Crusader Strikes critting for ~300 when these are the same hits that nail Level 70 Elites in instances for 1700+. I was using a blue mace out of SH and a mix of Karazhan DPS gear and Rep PvP1 items. While the character was perfectly capable of tearing the face off of a pair of Elite Ogres outside of Gruul's Lair at the same time, a Mage a mere one tier above would take little to no damage from most attacks.
WoW, that was boring.

I played and enjoyed the game exploring the new areas (this was when the game was new and you'd be actually one of the first people exploring the area with few others). I stopped enjoying the game when I got to the end and the game became all about raid raid raid, 40-man raid, DKP, scheduled raids. The final straw was my guild breaking up because a few members wanted to break up the guild and join a slightly smaller guild in order to make raid finding easier. The other guild broke up for the same reason mostly (and some other big guilds broke up) and this lead to there being only one major guild in the game (which had some class) which quickly broke up and reformed into a couple game of smaller guilds but quickly one of them became the biggest led by a bunch of jack asses. The game raids went from being led with guys with class to a bunch of jack ass immature acting kids. I heard that eventually that guild broke up when the leader stole the guild's gold store and sold it for money or used it to fund his character when he switched to alliance.
