Setzer wrote:I think he's saying that smaller nations should have the opportunity to conquer new lands and create satellite nations, if they're willing to expend the effort. An Imperium wouldn't really need to expand into a territory that size, and it would look like bullying if they did.
Well that is the point. In the last game, we fought a proxy war in Neverhood, and almost did in Terra Libertia. Moreover, a smaller nation has less resources to go around exploiting compared to an Imperium, which would just deploy the huge bulk of their forces to eradicate the threat without even sweating.

I wouldn't mind a militia-ridden neighbor... It opens lots of storytelling potential (like my big cities getting shelled with primitive rockets Hamas-style) and I'll be needing someone to sell small arms to anyway :).

Look no one said the third world nations we are putting in had to be stable. No need to have specific barbarian lands, a few of the NPC nations could be like the Congo or be teetering on the edge. It would also help to determine why these nations are shitholes. Past colonial exploitation and misrule comes to mind as a primary factor. Something I'd really like for this world is a sense of history, though we need not do the work of making any sort of detailed historical document unless someone feels like doing so.

for what's worth, I think the vast majority of countries should be on a continent rather than an island, for much the same reasons Skimmer/Shep gave.
"The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles."

Sea Skimmer wrote:Two continents with an Atlantic sized gap would be good, and a handful of nations could allowed to be independent islands; but if we end up spread all over we’ll just be stuck in the same boat as last time. Strategic weapons will become the only way to fight once more.
Hear, hear. The Cracked Pangea idea doesn't have to be a narrow strait; it can be an older break, with a few thousand miles in between and some minor islands in between for folks looking for strategic areas in trade routes.
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

For what it's worth I'm going ahead to claim now I'm putting my largish country on the east most side of the map and along the water, if it's on the "north" or south continence

As for distance I'd say a good 3,000 NM's between the continents should be enough. It's 100 less than between NY and France and much less than between NY and London.

Going further I'd say I'd have a good chunk of the upper part of the continent which narrows down the further south you go till you hit the ocean(Lets say the bottom third of my land has the border set on some river) if it's on the south, if it's on the north, reverse that with it going narrower as it climbs.

Ok, I have never done this before so how do you join up? Do I just ask here, specify what my country is called, its weapon types and how its run etc? What would the basics you need from me (I can build my country up around them)? Also, is there any good sites that show military hardware. I am not very knowledgeble on it all you see but I want to give this a shot.

Yes, more or less. As for military hardware, I think you might want to try extensive googling. Wikipedia might be a good place to start.

Military hardware really isn't important. Bear didn't even bother listing in any detail his forces, just that he had 'em. Spend time working on building your nation's other details instead.

Sea Skimmer wrote:If people want to start out with big gun battleships or gun cruisers they can just have them for free for all I care; the value of such ships is irrelevant on the strategic scale. Without modernization a single aircraft or coast missile battery or a sub or anything else can take one on and knock it out of action.

However if you want a big gun ship that’s also modernized with missiles and modern electronics that’s going to have to be paid for. I'd say the cost would be about as much as a destroyer for a basic SSM and point defense rearmament like the Iowa’s had in the 1980s. If you want to go all out and start adding SAMs and VLS it will cost more like the price of a cruiser (2 billion or so).

Heck, I think I’ll have a couple predreadnoughts or semi dreadnoughts around just for the hell of it, to go with all my other obsolete weapons.

Yeah, I have no problem if someone wants to have a couple General Belgranos in their navy over and above their point limits.

t.

Ok, I will start doing that. I have plenty of time anyway so no rush to do this but I would like a few things cleared up:
-Either 250,000 people at a first world level of income or 500,000 at a second world level
-A military of 1,000-2,500 personel (depending on US)
What does "US" mean? Does it relate to the income level above (500,00=2'500 personal)?
GDP $6,250,000,000 USD per year
Is that how much money the country makes in total or just the budget we have?

Oh and finally, is there any good programs to make a map with?

Thanks for the help.

The GDP is as it says, the Gross Domestic Product. How much you intend to spend of it, depends on how much taxes you have, and the % of the GDP you wish to spend.

As for population, I believe we meant that you can have either a first world population of 7.5 million in your case, or 15 million second world. Depends on how you want to play.

I can avoid listing my military forces in exact detail because my country is an extremely militaristic, paranoid state, where a great effort is made to keep nearly everything a secret from the outside world.

Well, he already declared he wanted to be right smack in the middle of the ocean, which is practically inviting an invasion since he would be our world's Pearl Harbour.

Yeah, well we can expect him to have a quick and violent end, especially if he pisses of Stas again.

So, is it just me or do you guys miss it too?

Yeah, we enjoy growling at each other every once in a while.

As for Coilerburg, if he pisses off everyone, he'd have at least 10 aircraft carriers and plenty of ships carrying battalions of war machines heading for him. It'd be a joint FUN and MESS operation, to be certain.

No, I want to be on a land border, and preferably be on a peninsula. I wanted to be in the middle of the ocean in the last game.

You are making me confused here. Last I checked, you wanted to have a super navy/airforce, but a pathetic army. So upon further digging, you did say you wanted to be a peninsular.

But it doesn't make sense. What happens if someone does invade and you don't have an army to stop it?

You have to declare something at some point, even if it's strictly OOC. That way we'd prevent dickery like you pulling 1000 M1A2s out of your ass, a bunch of SSMs out of the ether, etc.

Oh, it's not like I have only a tiny army. My army is large, it's merely underequipped and lower-tech in comparison with my navy and air force. After all, you can't have barely literate peasants fly fighter jets or crew sophisticated warships, but you can have them carry rifles and serve as cannon fodder in the army.

And don't try to figure out the thought processes of dictators. They do lots of things that don't appear to make sense. :P

Oh, certainly. It's just that my country's type gives me room to have a little vagueness in there. I'll start working on my country's navy-mind if I warm up for the game by detailing some ships in the form of IC propaganda broadcasts?
