What's the point in wearing a hoodie if the weather isn't shitty?Losonti Tokash wrote: Cause that's exactly what I said, right? Or maybe, I took issue with the assertion that I wear hooded jackets to conceal my identity. Or that that's the chief reason anyone wears a piece of clothing with a hood.

I've already given similar examples: baggy pants, backwards baseball caps. Yes, there are other potential reasons to wear them. But once they become a group fashion, then by wearing them, you associate yourself with the group. Like it or not.Zac Naloen wrote:I think, I can't be certain, that Wong agrees that it shouldn't as he's as much as conceded that there are valid reasons to wear a hoodie that don't = thug.

I find that difficult to agree with.
Someone wearing a Hoody with Avenged Sevenfold plastered across the front and back isn't associating himself with any chavs I know of.

For that matter what's the point in wearing a hoodie if it isn't waterproof? I don't know about other people on the board but if it's raining hard enough to use a hood then I pull out a rain jacket.General Zod wrote:

There doesn't seem to be a point in wearing a hood that's going to stick to my head when wet.

They're good "medium" weather coats in my experience. I love my huge trenchcoat, but it's too warm this side of autumn. They're also good for gigs because they're relatively stretchy and you can wrap them around your waist. I tend to wear stuff because I like the way it looks or because I'm in work.General Zod wrote:What's the point in wearing a hoodie if the weather isn't shitty?

I've found hoodies more useful in snow than rain. Then again I live in a region where rain is intermittent rather than torrential downpours most of the time so carrying around a raincoat all day isn't very practical.Cpl Kendall wrote: For that matter what's the point in wearing a hoodie if it isn't waterproof? I've never had that problem. But then again I usually use an umbrella in conjunction with a hoodie when it's raining outside if I plan ahead and am expecting shitty weather but it's not a guarantee. There doesn't seem to be a point in wearing a hood that's going to stick to my head when wet.

I can understand that. I'm from Vancouver, where rain is more than common so an umbrella or rain jacket is more practical. Now I just carry a gore-tex coat in my pack or car.General Zod wrote:

To be honest I haven't worn a hoodie since I was in junior highschool over 15 years ago but they don't seem to have changed much. They always wound up stuck to my head, mind you this was in serious rain.

Like I mentioned above, I carry a coat in my bag or trunk for just such an occasion.

protip; Its not important for young people to dress so that mike is impressed 100% of the time.
protip 2; hoodies dont need to be worn with the fucking hood up; they make a fairly good medium weather jacket and if the wind blows up or it gets rainy then you can put the hood on.
protip fucking 3; "national hoodie day" is no fucking different than casual pants friday or red nose day or any other semi-state sanctioned casual day.

Why would you need to protect your head from the rain? I grew up in one of the rainiest places in the country, acclimated to it, and now I don't even own an umbrella--no point in bothering with it. Your hair will dry in ten or fifteen minutes. Most people in the Pacific Northwest are like me, too.

I wear one when its cold/foggy, and its not a problem. If I wore won all the time, with the hood drawn tight and my hands thrust into my pockets, stomping around like a thug, it would be a problem.

As someone who wears glasses, being stuck out in the rain means your vision will quickly become non existent when the lenses get sopping wet with no protection. Personally I like not having to wipe them off every 5 minutes, and having a hoodie or umbrella means I keep the rain largely off my face and can actually see where I'm going. The Duchess of Zeon wrote:Why would you need to protect your head from the rain? I boggles my mind that in a discussion about people dressing like thugs or whatever you'd throw in some vignette about how you're immune to the rain. Some people have styled hair or clothes or personal items or health that they'd like to protect with headgear or umbrellas. This is totally unrelated to the issue. The Duchess of Zeon wrote:Why would you need to protect your head from the rain? Frankly, while I'd never be caught dead wearing a hoodie, they are as Rye says 'medium' weather gear. If the weather packs in you can use the hood (not that I'm sure what the hoods are even like these days) to make it a bit better than just a dodgey sweater, but it's not too hot for regular weather. It's not like people know if it's going to rain; you've got to dress for many eventualities.
Of course, cruising around with your face concealed = suspicion, and nothing is really going to change that.

That's not what people are saying. If it's raining than people expect you to wear a hood, dodgy or otherwise. Now when you walk into a store or it's broad daylight and you've got it up than people are going to wonder what your up to if they can't see your face.JointStrikeFighter wrote:I've worn big heavy Parker style jackets with the hood up because its been raining. It's the same deal if you walked around in a Nixon mask or a burqa. Hell even wearing sunglasses indoors can get you wierd looks.

Apart from when it gets on my glasses, being wet from the rain isn't an issue. But being cold from the rain is.The Duchess of Zeon wrote:Why would you need to protect your head from the rain? So how cold is the rain where you are ?
This may be a daft question, but do those negative connotations exist for anyone wearing a hoodie, or just people who wear it with the hood up? Im in my 20's and almost everyone my age that I meet wears hoodies on occasion, and I've never heard of someone thinking it looks thuggish. Maybe it's a very area-specific thing.
