Anyone else having problems with news.cis.dfn.de

Post by Durandal »

Well, I can't access ASVS, and I suspect that everyone's favorite free German news server may have been hit with the SQL virus released Friday night. Anyone else having trouble? I tried pinging, but I can't even resolve the host name.

Did you have to double-post it?

No problem, it's been fixed.

As to your question, it's probably your local DNS. I can access it fine.

Then could you be so kind as to give me the IP for the server?

130.133.1.4

And it's been that as long as I can remember, so you might want to just use that instead of news.cis.dfn.de in the future...

Alternatively your ISP could give you a nice free giganews account as a backup incase you ever have a problem like that.

I can't acccess news.fu-berlin.de, either. It seems my school has begun blocking all German news servers, and for some reason it won't let me authenticate on the internal news server.

Your school, eh? I'm betting they got smacked by the latest worm, alright.

My ISP has a SuperNews account, but I think my brother goes over our limit with all the binary groups...my school gives me an account, tho (a half-decent one at that).

Yeah, ever since the worm hit, I haven't been able to access the server. Fucking Microsoft ...

Apparently, there's been a patch for six months, though somewhat time consuming. It also did not cause problems with properly-firewalled DB servers.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people with the stripped-down version (MDSE) who were hit - and a lot of those are client machines with minimal protection.

That was the nice thing about UM, I was running up all sorts of binary downloads through their internal server and never once hit a limit of any kind. Gotta love unviersities.
