Question. If I was in the middle of a flat field and there's a thunderstorm, and there's no cover, what do I do? Should I crawl on my belly?

Cause, while standing under a tree in the middle of a field is dumb, just standing in the middle of a field is also not quite good.

More or less correct. You do not want to be the tallest thing around.

Now I did a job. I got nothing but trouble since I did it, not to mention more than a few unkind words as regard to my character so let me make this abundantly clear. I do the job. And then I get paid.- Malcolm Reynolds, Captain of Serenity, which sums up my feelings regarding the lawsuit discussed here.

The question is: How did you end up in a flat field with a thunderstorm going full force around you? I mean, they're not exactly the sneakiest things around, one would assume you'd have enough warning to seek cover of some sort before it hit.

It's just a Zorian hippotheticle Randome Altarnate Realty :P

I mean, like these ten dead guys. All they apparently had was a flat field and a lightning-conductive tree. They didn't think of crawling military-style out of the line of fire, and the thought wouldn't have occurred to me either if I was caught at the moment and all.

At least we can learn something from the misfortune of other people :)

Come to my part of the world - nothing but flat from horizon to horizon. Quite easy to get caught in the open, because open is often all you have.

That's not quite true here in southwestern Indiana (we have actual hills  ), but while I learned the advice about lightning and trees at an early age, it wasn't quite drummed in the same way 'stop, look, and listen' before crossing the street was.

IOW I could see myself making the same mistake.
"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."- General Sir Charles Napier
