Really? I had thought that Islam was essentially an outgrowth of Judaism which incorporated elements of Christianity; if it's descended from an early Christian heresy, then that changes quite a bit of what I thought I'd understood about Islam.

Edit: If you could provide a source that shows a link between the two, that would be awesome.
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

The fact that Islam considers Jesus a legitimate prophet of God alone should be proof enough that they fall under the rather huge umbrella of Christianity. Hell, if "Founding Father" debates are anything to go by, anyone who says anything positive about Jesus at all is a Christian.

Islam and some segments of Judaism believe this. Christianity is by definition the belief that Jesus was the Messiah and as of the Council of Nicea includes Jesus being the Son of God in the official dogma.

If the person in question does not believe in the Son of God thing, then they are at most an unconventional Christian. If they don't believe Jesus is the Messiah, then they are flat out not Christian by definition.
Where did Jesus actually say he is god or the son of god? I think all he said was "I am the alpha and the omega"

Well, Peter said that he was the son of God that one time, and Jesus basically responded with "STFU, n00b."

Ghetto edit: Upon further research, it appears that the bit I was thinking of (Matthew 16:15-17) doesn't actually say what I remembered it saying. I thought that Jesus's response was something along the lines of "tell no one what went on here" but this is actually where he gives the "upon this rock I shall build my church" spiel.
