We were a colonial power, mang! Galleons and trade fleets and ships!

I guess back in old times, Byzantine-Shroomanian relations were quite icy? I'd imagine that Shroomania of old would hire privateers to take on Byzantine boats and such during the Age of Sail! It would be awesome!

Your stiff Emperor Heraclius would be relatively ambivalent towards modern Shroomania, until the newly-elected Prime Minister Shroom - and his buddies in the MacMillan Multicorporation - makes overtures and changes for the better!

BAM baby, BAM!

The ISCA needs HUEG ships!

We are still open to cooperation. No doubt the competition was fierce.

Or we could combine and consolidate, and corner the market together.

It was new to me last time around. You'll pick it up as you go. :)
Bluewolf wrote:Do you just make the maps with anything you want?
Pretty much. There are some territory size restrictions but that won't matter in how you make your map, just so long as you're not cramming it down with multiple New York City and Los Angeles analouges.

Pah! We have uranium! We can build our own engines!

But seriously, nuclear engines for cargo ships is simply not efficient. Takes up too much space and costs way too much to maintain.

They do allow you faster transit times via higher cruise speeds. This means more cargo in a set period of time, which means that you can make money off of them.

And while you do that, you increase wear and tear, and the ship is out of commission for months for refueling and reconditioning every few years which cost not only money and time. Cost vs time, you are better off with a standard vessel. The Korean 22000TEU vessel manages 23-26 knots and I dare say the design can be tweaked for more velocity, and it runs on Diesel or Turbines.

For example: 11000 TEU with max 15000

The above vessel manages 25.5 knots. It's longer than a carrier. Runs on diesel. And more the TEU it carries, the cheaper. Throw in a Nuclear reactor, you make it insanely expensive per TEU to make cargo runs.

I'm basically going to model my nation on S. Korea, minus the corruption. Huge Shipyard industry, strong semiconductor industry, an nascent aerospace but good enough to produce something, and a few other high tech industries to boot.

Plus there's the higher investment cost, what upkeep it requires will be more expensive due to the reactor, as well as training and paying a skilled crew to run the reactor.

We're going to have, at best, the Atlantic Ocean to seperate us. I don't think a nuclear powered commerce ship would really be any more practical than conventional power, especially since (if we do as last time) we'd have plenty of oil to burn through.

I'm going for a Germany-style nation.

S. Korea is pretty Japan-Lite now, but fast catching up on many areas or has already caught up. Shipbuilding they are equal, and many other things. I will be heavily bent on research as well in heavy and light industry engineering and the hard sciences.

Yeah, Germany is pretty awesome. They industrialized fast and have all the premium land.

So...can I have a long-standing historical rivalry with Shroomania, too? :P

The big is thing is we more places intended to be continental powers, not more island nations. People need not worry about being easily overrun on land with 900 billion dollar economies (Iran affords a near six hundred thousand man active military on 2/3rds that) and being part of a large landmass with have economic advantages.

Ill be posting a map of Japanistan shortly, and given that its over 3 million square kilometers it will probably made a good starting point for forming a continent

Modern USN naval reactors can go over 30 years without refueling, but that kind of would be expensive to buy upfront. This long life accomplished by using high grade fuel with a neutron inhibitor that slowly ‘burns’ away as the reactor runs, balancing out the accumulation of impurities that normally build up and force you to change fuel. The reactors may also have moving neutron reflectors and a breeder cycle, but that’s speculation. Those technologies have been developed by US nuclear laboratories.

With 125-200+ dollar oil prices nuclear power could become economical. At that point you’re talking about 1-2 billion dollars plus in lifetime oil fuel costs.. If oil is 16 dollars are barrel then diesel all the way.

An 8000 TEU ship is probuabbly all the Atlantic can justify for container ships in real life. That said, SDN is richer so we might be able to justify much bigger ships on a short route. Everyone start building 60 foot deep ports! That’s the real hurdle to those supermassive ships. Super Megagoon-Old Rangoon New Maritime Sunshine Atomic Blasted Deepwater Terminal Facility will be scaled for 24,000 TEU ships drawing up to 90 feet.

Actually my whole plan is to invest in infrastructure, build up rapid communication and transit networks, and then go about making knock offs of everybody else's tech while lowering costs through sheer mass of industrial might....

Actually, all these huge ships are meant to ply long routes, like from Japan/China/S.Korea to Singapore to India or Europe straight away.

All these ships will be post Panamax, so yes, they are huge.

Yeah, that would be cool. I'm just looking for things that PeZookians can be dissatisfied about, so that internal affairs aren't all roses and fluffy bunnies dancing together on top our aircraft carriers.

I think Shroomanian anti-monarchists would be a bit annoyed with Heraclius and Paul ruling all over the place. I mean, the anti-monarchists did kick out Queen Asphixia back in the 19th century...

Doesn't help that Prime Minister Shroom is also descended from royalty!

Though the noble houses are dead, I plan to have post-monarchy court intrigue in Shroomania. With House Schroms and House Shrooms and Clan MacMillan an' shit!
