Stargate Atlantis 5x03 Broken Ties (Spoilers)
Okay didn't see a thread.
Return of the annoying Satedans. Or at least Tyre. Pretty ho-hum episode. Ronon is turned into a Wraith worshiper and promptly rescued. Then we get to see his recovery process which was pretty unnecessary since we already know that he's gonna be fine.
3/5 because Mr.Woolsey is at least a marked change from Carter and he was somewhat amusing. Tyre was pretty badass too.

Filler all the way. Its one of Atlantis' oft repeated like 3 plots.
City in danger from disease....
Team member kidnapped....
Yet another "unstoppable" enemy....
etc...
This show really needs a fresh batch of writers. The acting on it is about its only strength now. Even though the show has basically turned into Stargate: Voyager, I still seem to like these characters.
As to this episode, I agree with neoolong that it was a waste of Mark Dacascos. Satedans = Klingons is retarded. Next week is out third new enemy lets hope the show gets better.

The only thing I found interesting is we learn the repeated doses of the Wriath enzyme will mess with your mind to the point that it makes you easily controlled by the Wraith.
We also learn that Wraith have more desire to protect their Hive than they do for their own personal safety. When Tyre first threatened to destroy the lab the Wraith mocked them that they would not blow themselves up. When he mentioned that they placed all the explosives in the right place and it would kill the advantage his Hive would get he became much more scared. The Wraith never appeared to be all that afraid of dying, which seems to be pretty consistent with their character but the strength of loyaly to their Hive (ie clan) is something new.

Keep in mind, Ronan was painfully brought to the point of death dozens of times. That alone could mess with you.Timotheus wrote:The only thing I found interesting is we learn the repeated doses of the Wriath enzyme will mess with your mind to the point that it makes you easily controlled by the Wraith.

The episode only now getting a thread speaks volumes.
It was a piece of shit that got crapped out by the the Voyager-style automated plot generator. About the only thing that could have redeemed it was if Ronan was the one to do the noble-pointless-sacrifice at the end. I still can't figure out how the writers think that this character works better then Lt. Ford was working in S1. I can't escape the conclusion that its based on personal chemistry on the set, because it certainly isn't tied to anything we see on the screen.

Not really. He mentioned the other two Satedans we heard about before. Whilst Ronan initially believed they were stronger and more hounourable for dying rather than giving in to the Wraith, it was actually said by this Wraith that they died because they were too weak to survive the process. So that's two Satedans at least we know of who weren't strong. And yet, that same Wraith claimed that he expected Sheppard to survive the process and turn.Timotheus wrote:I have been curious though. Are Satedans implied to be physically different from other humans? I intitally thought Ronan being stronger was just him but it seems that we are getting race wide wank.
Really though, even if Satedans were marginally stronger than most humans, I wouldn't go so far as to call that 'wank'. They did get mostly anhilated after all, yet we've seen the very human Genii survive the Wraith (admitedly by being smarter than the Satedans). For all we know they simply have a higher standard of physical training for their soldiers, or Sateda could have been a higher gravity world. Not that I think either is the case, as I mentioned before, we already have two instances of Satedan soldiers dying in captivity due to being too weak.
Overall, I give this a ... what? 2? 3? 3 I think. Pretty average, like the other two episodes of this new season. Not great, not awfull. To be honest this latest season is a bit 'bleh', but I'll stick with it because some of the upcoming episodes sound promising.

I think Ronon and his friends seem to have been elite soldiers or warriors or something of that sort.Timotheus wrote:I have been curious though. People comparing this to Voyager should immediately go read some of Chuck's Voyager Guide. Seriously, this isn't good, but Voyager episodes typically make no logical sense whatsoever. Yes, it wasn't great, but the characters acted fairly sensibly throughout. Which puts it light years beyond a typical Voyager episode.
And eh. 3. I didn't regret downloading it, it wasn't great.

I think Satedans are getting the 'badass' rep in Pegasus because the only ones who survived the destruction of Sateda were professional soldiers.

I'll let up abit and say its not quite Voyager yet, but its heading down that road quick.
The show has a huge reset button.
We're on out fourth new "menacing" enemy by season 5.
Starship combat is a joke (although to be fair this started in SG-1).
Same plots being rehashed over and over again.
Stargate writers are in their comfort zone, and they are afraid to do anything new. Even when they decided to kill off a beloved character, like half a season later its "whoops he's not really dead, I mean he is, but not really".
The acting is whats saving this show, at least to me. Despite the moronic writing, I still genuinely care about these characters (except Tayla, I have never been able to take a liking to her). Even Ronan "Cliche" Dex is still interesting. Picardo is doing a decent job even though he's been given a weak start with Woolsey.I am seriously hoping this latest enemy is somewhat good and does not turn into another joke like the Wraith.

I beg your pardon. The space battle seen in "Be all my sins remembered" is certainly better than 95% of space battles in science fiction television.Atavarius wrote:

I would even go as far as calling it better than BSG's overrated space battles, but then I'd be crucified by that shows mob of fans so I'll refrain.

Eh. I'd much rather it have been a brutal shooting gallery by the Asurans that they were lucky to survive at all.Stargate Nerd wrote:I beg your pardon. The space battle seen in "Be all my sins remembered" is certainly better than 95% of space battles in science fiction television.

Yeah that didn't make sense at all. The Aurora's should have been assraping the Hive ships and those Travelers ships with Drones. Instead they were shooting yellow globs of shit.NecronLord wrote: Eh. Well for one you knew what was going on at all times even though there were dozens of ships on screen. BSG battles get convoluted with merely two capital ships and the fighter craft on screen. Once you lose track you don't even care anymore.phongn wrote: Well, how is it better? It's certainly not a bad space battle, but it mostly looked like a bunch of ships shooting stuff up.
Maybe it's because I prefer capital ships duking it out rather than sending their mosquito squads against each other but besides the awesome battle for New Caprica, I've yet to see a battle that really impresses me in BSG.
