Breaking.. 5.8 earthquake (preliminary) in LA...

Post by The Duchess of Zeon »

First article up. The earthquake only happened fifteen minutes ago and was centered just Southeast of the Chino Hills.
LOS ANGELES—A strong earthquake shook Southern California on Tuesday, and the jolt was felt from Los Angeles to San Diego, and slightly in Las Vegas.

Preliminary information from the U.S. Geological Survey estimated the quake at magnitude 5.8, centered 29 miles east-southeast of downtown Los Angeles near Chino Hills in San Bernardino County.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said there were not immediate reports of damage or injury in Los Angeles.

The quake struck at 11:42 a.m. PDT. Buildings swayed in downtown Los Angeles for several seconds.

I was shopping at Ralphs when it hit. Some things fell of the shelves, but it wasn't that bad. I'm in Irvine.

I was on the ninth floor. Quite scary when you feel the whole building move (and not stop for over a minute afterwards).

I keep expecting to feel an earthquake and have it turn out to be a meteor impact.

I live in San Bernardino city. I was in my car at the time, and was really worried because I thought there was something seriously wrong with my car because it was shaking. Then it hit me there's an earthquake, and that notion was cemented when I saw the nearest traffic light shaking.

I was sitting in my house when it hit. Only one mug broken, and my two cats are very freaked out. Otherwise, every thing is groovy

I was in in OCC's TV studio in Costa Mesa. I felt it, and it was a bit unnerving being in there with that lighting grid above you

Guess my older brother wassupervising a youth conference in Anaheim today. He's alright, and his hotel is safe for continued habitation.

I'm sure the kids with him are pretty nervous, though.

Wasn't too bad in Irvine. I ran downstairs and out of the house, but it only lasted for a few seconds, at least from my prespective.

Grips are putting in the grid over one of my sets at Warner today.

Felt it, waited for the shaking to stop, and went back to work. It wasn't much, definitely not as bad as even Whittier Narrows.

That's the funny thing about the Richter scale, it's logarithmic so a slight difference in the numbers is a huge difference in magnitude...

Yup. Not even two hundred kilotons. An average American nuke puts out more energy than that.

Richter scale is logarithmic, 5.8 is a lot more serious than the 5.4 it turned out to be.

Yes, I know. I was making a pun, however.

I was in a mall in Costa Mesa, and the shaking lasted for quite a while. The funny thing is that no one panicked, except for the three people from out-of-state who'd never been in an earthquake before. I had to wait for one of them to stop screaming to tell her to get into a sturdy doorway.
