Fire at Phelps church

TOPEKA | The Topeka Fire Department is investigating a small fire outside of a church whose members protest at soldier’s funerals.

A fence and garage at Fred Phelps’ Westboro Baptist Church became engulfed in flames early Saturday, according to the Topeka Capitol-Journal Web site. The fire did not spread to the church building.

Topeka Fire Marshal Greg Bailey said the cause of the fire has not been determined. However, a spokeswoman for the church, Shirley Phelps-Roper, said she believes it was deliberately set.

Members of the church frequently picket military funerals, arguing that the deaths of U.S. troops overseas are part of God’s punishment for the nation’s tolerance of homosexuality.

Bailey said damage is estimated at $10,000.

All this will accomplish is making these people more paranoid and insane. In the short term however, its a blow to the face of bigotry and hate. They are hypocrites for going to the police given how much they hate America and it's "evil government".

Uh, no. They've never really attempted to garner public sympathy, that's really not how they work. They get their feeling of righteousness from the whole world being against them. They've been bombed before, it was probably more of the same.

So change public "sympathy" with "attention". Works out to be effectively the same anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if someone else really did firebomb them, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were some type of publicity/insurance stunt either.

As much as I wish the Phelps would see the fire as divine punishment and take the hint that they should STOP dissing veterans by shouting, "God hates fags," at funerals, I KNOW they'll accuse homosexuals, Satanists, Jews, and [insert scapegoat here] of arson.

So how do these people, you know, stay in the communities that they're victimizing.

A few months ago, the WBC came to my home town to protest the funerals of some kids from a nearby school who died in a drunk driving accident. There was a lot of talk about counter protesting, and trying to block them legally, but I don't get why people don't just make it impossible for them to stay in the area to protest.

You know, slash their car's tires, vandalize whatever hotel they're staying at, etc.

Mostly because extremists who will willingly resort to violence are on their side, I imagine. WBC also makes use of child protestors, I expect to discourage assault.

It's not like the police will ever find who did this. Even if they do. Kansas might be a fundie shithole, but it also loves the US Military, and the Phelps finally alienated the whole country the moment they started protesting at soldiers' funerals.

You know I still can't believe they did that. How stupid can you be to attack the very essence of an American hero like that? These soldiers are (ostensibly) defending and propogating the highest values of the country on an international scale, and these idiots say they got what they dererved because they aren't burning gays at the stake in the US. This is supposed to get support for their church?

I just don't understand how they could be that nuts. Why the hell are they so fixated on homosexuality anyway? It's only one of the litany of sins listed in the Bible and if you were going to measure them by occurence, then adultery or prostitution could trump it hands down. Homosexuality, (or at least the nearest equivalent), is mentioned what...something like 3 times? Yeah, God really made sure we all know it was the most important thing to watch out for.
