By JOHN PYE, APposted:
(Aug. 6) - Olympic gold medalist swimmer Amanda Beard had to launch her naked, anti-fur campaign poster outside the Athletes' Village on Wednesday after Chinese authorities canceled a planned unveiling, citing safety concerns.

Celebrities Pose Nude for Cause
Amanda Beard's PETA poster ceremony is moved outside of the Olympic Village after a ruling by Chinese authorities. See other famous celebrities who have posed nude for PETA.
In a poster for the animal rights group PETA, the reigning 200-meter breaststroke champion appears naked in front of the U.S. flag and the slogan "Be comfortable in your own skin. Don't wear fur."
Jason Baker, an Asia-Pacific spokesman for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, said the launch was "a bit more dramatic than we had planned" after Chinese security officials visited a hotel where an official news conference had been scheduled and shut down the event.
"From what I've been told from the hotel, the public security bureau showed up at midnight and told them our specific event had to be canceled for safety reasons, without going into any specifics," Baker said. "When I arrived at 8 a.m., there were public security officials in the press conference room we had booked.
"Amanda didn't want her voice to be silenced, so we went ahead and arranged something else - we never knew if we were going to be stopped at any point."
Baker said the protest was not against China and did not interfere with the Olympics. Police and security did not interfere with the event outside the village's south gate.
"It was a sexy ad really designed for the U.S. market. It was positive, and it was (supposed) to be done in a private function room," Baker said. "I'm surprised they were so concerned, given we've done similar with Asian celebrities in the past."
The 26-year-old Beard, who has posed nude in men's magazines, said she decided to participate in the PETA campaign because she loved animals and was horrified to see how fur was produced for fashion in some places.
"I have seen a lot of the videos, and (it) brings me to tears," the four-time Olympian was quoted saying in a PETA statement. "What (some people) think is pretty is actually something that's very gruesome and gross."

Note one thing thing. The American flag is mount on the wall behind her wrong. The Blue field is always suppose to be on the right.
Here we have PETA trying to say that because their poster includes a Olympian, they have the right to put it on Olympic property. China says no way.

I don't see anything particularly wrong with this. Demonstrating something is per definition attention whoring and to demonstrate wearing fur is a good thing. PETA often does stupid counter productive stuff but this isn't one of them as far as i'm concerned.

PETA is using an Olympic athlete to allow them to push their poster into a major location at the Olympics. They are on purpose drawing extra attention to the fact that they did not get to do it.
I never said fur was a good thing but I do not suppose PETA's attention whoring methods for protesting it. This is no different then the pictures they make of naked women with various cuts of beef drawn on their bodies.
One note, I would love to see these pictures posed in Alaska in December, OUTSIDE.
We have synthetic versions of the most fur products. A mink coat is nothing more then frivolus extravigance.

Why does PETA have a right to put their posted on Olympic property? China is running an entertainment show, and they have the right to kick out anyone who's trying to derail it.

So what?

That really depends on. If you think that meat is as bad as fur then there is no difference. If you think that meat is ethically acceptable and fur not then there is a difference.

This is a fucking retarded objection. All commercial and political advertising is intended to "draw extra attention". Pointing at someone trying to put up a fucking billboard and saying "attention whore" is nothing more than an exercise in redundancy.
But by all means, if you can find me examples of advertising where they do not want "extra attention", then please do so. You might as well title the thread "OMG, PETA is using advertising techniques!"

Unless PETA's actively attempting to disrupt things, anyone who can afford it can advertise at the olympics. So long as they don't try stopping ceremonies I don't really think China would give a fuck.

The article is about PETA complaining that they weren't allowed to put the poster up. The pretence they are giving is that since the poster contains a Olympic Althete that they have the right to put it on Olympic property and not letting them them is oppressing their message.

As much as I hate defending PETA, I don't think you read your own article closely enough. They actually seem to have a point in this case.

How is putting it up in a private function room in any way disruptive?

No one but natives actually wears fur in alaska.
Speaking as an Alaskan Native, that tends to be fairly rare as well. Fur is just as much of a luxury up here.
What I was trying to imply was doing a naked photo shoot outside in Alaska weather in December in the normal amount of time required to do it and see how long the model stays alive.
A human can not survive in Alaska without some sort of coat. Does that mean you need a fur coat, no. Does that mean everything that looks like fur is fur. No.

I am also an alaskan native, albeit ten years removed. Really it depends on how much a given group of natives follows their old traditions. Some of the ones farther north might wear seal fur/skins or arctic fox, but I am not sure how statistically common that is. You are in the state presently so I will defer.

Right but an ad that is critical of the audience's lifestyle is effectively a disruption.
China should have the right to decide who can and cannot advertise there.

And how does that mean PETA is being unreasonable by making the effort?

How was it critical of China's lifestyle when the ad was aimed at American audiences? I wasn't aware furs were popular in China.
China should have the right to decide who can and cannot advertise there.
No shit sherlock. But if they care about international relations at all banning advertisements during the olympics for questionable reasons is a great way about gaining negative press.

Even with her busy and demanding training schedule, Amanda took the time to bare her skin to help save animals' skins. With the tagline "Be Comfortable in Your Own Skin. Don't Wear Fur," Amanda posed nude to help raise awareness of the cruelty inherent in the fur industry.
With Beijing hosting the 2008 Olympic Summer Games, Amanda's ad couldn't have come at a better time. An investigation into the fur industry in China—which is where most fur originates—revealed that minks, foxes, dogs, cats, and other animals are kept in tiny wire cages in all weather extremes. In the video footage, animals were strangled or bludgeoned, and they were often still alive and struggling when workers flipped them onto their backs or hung them by their legs or tails to skin them.
That's why they wanted to display the ad in Beijing. She wanted to pose with the ad in front of the Swim Centre, but the government wouldn't permit that, so she posed with it in the Athletes' Village.

In this case, the information in the OP's article was decidedly lacking.

In the article it mentions that when they got to the conference room they had booked for the press conference, there were public security officials waiting there for them. The public security bureau showed up at midnight at the hotel , and told the hotel the even was canceled because of unspecified safety reasons (6th paragraph of the article).

I was specifically referring to this line that was lacking in the original article:

Ah, sorry about that. I guess the government didn't want them making a huge media circus out of it, and further tarnish China's image.

The Chinese have only two rules governing the discussion of sex.
1) You may talk about sex when the subject is sexual education or planned parenthood, i.e., to avoid violating the one child policy.
2) You are NOT to talk about sex outside of the subject of sexual education or planned parenthood.
As you can see, Chinese attitudes towards sex is VERY conservative; hell, before the one child policy made sexual education and planned parenthood a requirement, there was only one rule: You do NOT talk about sex, EVER.
PETA doing a "I'd rather go naked than wear fur" campaign in a place that conservative is like going to Vatican City, entering a cathedral during Sunday mass, pulling down your pants, and shitting right on the altar. That's just BEGGING for trouble.
Those gun nuts do not understand the meaning of "overkill," and will simply use weapon after weapon of mass destruction (WMD) until the monster is dead, or until they run out of weapons.
They have more WMD than there are monsters for us to fight. (More insanity here.)
