1920s, prohibition, and Flappers

Post by Vehrec »

So, I've found myself in the unenviable situation of having to write somewhere between 1000 and infinite words of an AU for a certain recently ended kids show on Nick. That's not important.

What is important is that I've decided to set it in the 1920s and I've realized that I'll need a lot of background material to make it really take to life. So I'm putting out a call for books and such-like on the period. Specifically info on life for the 20-something in this period, popular culture of the times, and maybe some stuff on the whole Prohibition thing itself and the people who broke that law of the land more specifically. The story will be set in either Chicago or New York if that helps people help me.

Well, having a convertible room can be a help. Perhaps make one of the characters a corrupt cop who takes bribes to keep the bar secret.

Most peoples' knowledge of that era comes from movies, which are generally not the most accurate source of historical learning.

Fortunately, most decent academic libraries have newspapers on microfilm from that particular era, so my best advice would be to visit a library and get cozy with the microfilm reader.
