Some help on hard disk space!!

Post by fusion »

So, I was going though my uncle's computer and I was cleaning the debris files and I noticed that the C:/ drive properties say that there are 30 GBs in use with 25 GBs of free space; while there are only 9 gigs worth of files. I already checked the hidden and protected folders. I am also running error check.

So help me!!! Where are the 16 GBs??

If you have a FAT partition you may have thrown a (rather large) filechain, run scandisk.
Give fire to a man, and he will be warm for a day.
Set him on fire, and he will be warm for life.

System backups, probably. Your computer doesn't happen to be a Lenovo, does it?

Also, if you're running a Windows that supports it, shadow copies and system restore points. Its all perfectly normal, and the OS should start scaling back those files to only the more recent ones if you start running out of space (albeit, sometimes, for example if you suddenly start a several multi-gigabyte torrent its possible for it to not be able to get enough space in time before problems occur).

If you want to control the process in detail, see here for instructions:

Sorry, I forgot to tell you it was a windows XP. Also it is not the system restore...
