Athlete says sports steroids changed him from woman to man

Post by fgalkin »

BERLIN, Germany (CNN) -- Heidi Krieger proved herself one of the world's top athletes in the 1980s, winning medal after medal in the shot put for East Germany.

Now, the former sports star looks disdainfully at the awards, dismissing them as "doping medals" and honors that turned a woman into a man.

Heidi Krieger, the 1986 European women's shot-put champion, became Andreas Krieger after a sex-change operation in 1997. He says he had been fed so many steroids by his coaches without his knowledge that physical and emotional problems began.

The young woman's physique changed drastically, as did her feelings. "I felt much more attracted to women and just felt like a man. But I knew I was not lesbian," Krieger told CNN.

Her coaches said they were giving her vitamin pills, but they were actually feeding her Oral-Turinabol anabolic steroids. Video Watch how Krieger's body changed »

Krieger is among an estimated 10,000 East German athletes thought to have been given performance-enhancing drugs to help build their country into a sports powerhouse.

In the 1970s and 1980s, the German Democratic Republic was one of the most successful Olympic Games nations. But after the fall of Soviet Communism, it was revealed just how much steroids were fueling the medal machine. Sports leaders, including Manfred Ewald, the head of East Germany's National Olympic Committee from 1973 until 1990, were convicted in the doping programs.

Krieger, who is now married and runs an army surplus store, says he has taken his life into his own hands and does not want to be seen as a victim.

But he and other former East German athletes tricked by their coaches are worried that too little has been learned from their plight.

Doping remains a major issue in sports, and many drug tests will be conducted in Beijing, China, as officials try to catch any cheats hoping to go undetected and get Olympic glory.

Experts say the next step for sportsmen and women looking for an illegal boost to physical performance could be gene therapy -- so-called "gene doping."

Sports physician Willi Heepe said gene therapy means the body will basically dope itself.

If that happens, "the human monster will be a reality," he told CNN.

Krieger is worried that the pressure to win could create new victims.

"If today's athletes say they want to take the risk, they really don't know what risk they are taking," he said.
linky.

Have a very nice day.

I'm not sure. I know they're pretty serious about showing everyone up during the Olympics, but I think pumping them full of drugs might be a bit far.

Depending on how sensitive drug screens are today, it might not be possible to repeat what happen to the East German athletes.

They're willing to forge documents to let younger athletes compete; I think they would be willing to dope if it ever really came to it. Their politicians place enormous pressure on the coaches to get the perfect athletes and enormous pressure on the athletes to be perfect. People who won gold medals in the 2004 Olympics are being threatenedto have all of their past achievements wiped out:
Recently, on ChinaDaily, it said: The country’s General Administration of Sports senior officials gave Liu Xiang “the ultimatum”: If Liu Xiang cannot win the gold medal in Beijing, then his past accomplishments will be meaningless.

You never know...

Man, I find this totally amazing in an obscenely grotesque way, though. The wonders of biochemistry! Chemicals are what determine a human being's growth and development, from the womb onwards - and I guess it isn't too far fetched to imagine that artificial methods would create effects these drastic.

...

Fuck! I hope this hasn't happened to Ivan Drago!

You think the Chinese government has scruples? Nationalism is one of the most important things to them. Of course they're doping.

Not sure about this particular case, but I've heard a very similar story repeated for a number of years.

Dolph Lundgren was on a swedish radio-station about a month ago and spent an hour or so talking about his life, he had known many people who were roughly the same age as him back in the 80's who pumped themselves full with steroids and did other drugs while out partying, almost all of them were dead now.

Of course today's athletes and trainers say that "there area a few bad eggs". Granted, its the athlete that's the victim, but still, their desire to win ponders on the ridiculous.

I wonder whether one day we will see an end to the Olympics: it was once an arena among the world's athletes that was measured in talent, dedication and sheer training. I mean, before the whole doping thing hit big-time, someone winning the medal was a great genuine honour: HE/SHE WON, fair and square.

Now, it is an issue of who can pump more steroids into the body. Winning is a questionable issue, as everybody is betting on doping on such a level that its not even funny.4
I mean, the guy in the article is ashamed of having an Olympic medal!

And gene-buffing is hardly conservative. I recall a documentary where a scientist was studying a disorder where a person's body just keeps producing muscle without reason or end, turning any energy into muscle rather then fat. It may sound good for people that dream of having a six-pack, but from the look of it, the guy was in pain. It seems that your body can make only so much tense muscle before it starts to run into quirks.

Anyway, the scientist mentioned that theoretically, they could replicate the effect and control it, thus artificially making the body create more and more muscle. The process uses the body's natural muscle-building hormones/enzymes/whatever, thus is practically undetectable.
You think the Chinese government has scruples? Nationalism is one of the most important things to them. Of course they're doping.
I heard that in the building they are doing it, one side has the Chinese athletes tested for doping and the other side helping to get trough the test in another side.

I hate nationalism for stuff like these: a nation is supposed to be for its people rather then people for a nation.
Credo!

Bah. I won't be impressed with artificial body manipulation until we can make gross physical changes, like, say, changing a person's sex. Until then we're just mucking around in the pharmacy.

With over a billion people, China has no need for Steroids-they can locate mutant or genetically advantaged members of the population and simply forcibly collide them with somwhere those talents will shine forth.

But that doesn't mean that they might not take a sup-gold preformer up a notch. Can't rule anything out.
