D D er for gas

Post by Chardok »

no, this isn't a tired old "ZOMG USE WATER INSTEAD OF GAS AND GET TEN BILLION MILES A GALLON!1!1oneonelol"

Instead, I have a question about the real numbers behind using a water/baking soda mixture along with what is apparently limited electrolysis to yield hydrogen which...is...I guess fed into the air intake to mix with the ambient air and gas in the combustion chamber which produces more power with less application of gas pedal, thereby reducing the amount of gas you use and by proxy improving gas milage substantially.

That is...I think that's how it works.

At any rate. I'm not all sciency like most people here, but I am mechanically inclined (I consider myself a mechanical "power user" if you will) so my question to you all is: Does it wash? Is it/can it be real? Can the claims be reconciled somehow and have you even perhaps tried it?

Fuckballs. I didn't notice Ricky jacked my keyboard while I was writing the title. Can a mod change that to "Water for Gas" ?

It would be far more efficient to use that electricity to power a supplemental electric motor, rather than using it for electrolysis.

Right. But assume you have a standard ICE and going all-electric is not an option. Is this a viable alternative/supplement?

No, it's probably a complete waste of money.

This is pretty much the same water-to-gas scam, only with a teaspoon of baking soda. Think about it . . . you're investing X number of joules to break the water apart into hydrogen and oxygen. When you burn it, you get X number of joules back. However, a car's engine is around 40% efficient, at best. Which means you're only feeding 0.4X joules back into the electrical system to break the next batch of water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen.

So to answer your questions: A) No. B) Hell no. C) The claims are likely to be utter fabrications. D) The laws of thermodynamics state that the only one to profit from me trying such a scheme would be the scammers peddling it, so no.

Even if you have a conventional engine you can still add a bigger battery and a belt drive motor-generator to make it a crappy hybrid. In fact several hybrids on the US market do exactly that and then try to charge for 4000 extra dollars for the feature… bad deals as far as vehicles go, but then you get to exploit those hybrid tax breaks.

Anything involving electrolysis on the vehicle is a scam at worst or just bad information stemming from ignorance at best. The use of baking soda at least shows whoever was saying this was slightly less ignorant then normal though. It makes the water more like an electrolyte (distilled water for example wont work at all) electrolyte and makes electrolysis more efficient but its still a major net loss of energy. Certain salts other then baking soda are optimal for turning water into an electrolyte though, but baking soda is pretty good in terms of readily available compounds.

A much better idea would be to put a couple windmills on your roof and use it to power an electrolysis machine at home, which fills up a cylinder of compressed hydrogen for use on your car. The hydrogen feed system would then be rigged to only add hydrogen when the engine is under high loads, reducing peak consumption of gasoline without requiring a huge amount of hydrogen storage. But that would all be expensive in hardware and complicated to setup, not a do it yourself thing for most people.

I have been wondering about these "water for gas" websites, They get alot of internet hype about the next best way to save the planet.

9/11 conspiracy websites also get a lot of hype.

The Internet is a gigantic pile of junk, so it's really nothing surprising :D
