I keep thinking of all those prophecies both religious and secular that say this is the dawn of a new dark age. It looks like the world wide economy is ready to just go poof!

Have you even been paying attention around here lately?

Peak oil? Global warming? Banks going down? Recession? Major economies on the verge of collapse?

If this does go down the way many including people, including people on this very board, think it will we shall have a dark age right up there with anything in any religious prophecy.

An my good sir I only stated "I keep thinking of..." as in this stuff reminds me of it. NOT ZOMG they where right!. I also mentioned secular prophecies, okay maybe it be better to call them predictions based on the most accurate data available.

Still you asked everyone's thoughts. There are mine this makes me think of many a dire prediction from the secular and spiritual sides.

IIRC, isn't this what normally happens. Though now it's due to a possible global depression, increasing food and labor costs, and an oil peak normally don't companies move out of a country when the labor begins to cost more and the like; then moving on to other nations, etc.? This being how many nations manage to begin advancing up. Or am I wrong.

I also remember the book The New Asian Hemisphere, have to finish reading it.

One of the things I noticed when reading this was wondering whether the Oil Peak was factored into this, but he did indirectly address it (not sure if intentional) by saying the rise brings more people to make advances and use their mines and that can arguably mean more ideas on how to lessen the effects.

He did say "secular prophecies" as well, and people decades ago have predicted many of the stuff that's happening now.

That's only been the case in recent decades - through most of history moving companies to other nations was not so easy.

You are placing ancient ravings on the same level as documented facts. You are exactly what they are talking about when they say "one dumb son of a bitch."

I typically go with the assumption that "secular prophesies" means "Nostradomus". The analyze-predict cycle based on experience and knowledge is not quite on the same level as a "prophesy", which typically implies some sort of un-natural or even super-natural angle to the gaining of knowledge.

That said, the prospect of another actual 1930's style Depression-with-a-capitol-D is not too far fetched, I think. As I pointed out in another thread, and as many of us have known for some time, the government is willing to bail out poorly performing companies because they fear the job loss effects in their voting disticts (ie, losing their re-elections). This means crappy companies keep limping along, protected by taxpayer funded bailouts.

As much as I dislike "Libertopian" ideals about the Free Market, I have to admit their brutal manner in which they'd be willing to let the herd be culled does, in fact, have some degree of merit to it.
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

If all you want to do is have some harmless, mindless fun, go H3RE INST3ADZ0RZ!!
Grrr! Fight my Brute, you pansy!

"Secular prophecy" makes about as much sense as "secular creationism". It's completely fucking stupid when they're just relying on available data to make projections based on trends and maths. They're only prophecies for totally retarded idiots who are incapable of making the distinction.
