Shepistani Disputed Territories -- aka Kanawha

The Klavostani mercenaries stepped off the plane into the dusty airfield.

"Man, what a fucking dump," said the lead one, a veteran of many ethnic conflicts around the world.

"You said it. Who the fuck would want to live here?" added his second in command.

"Retards and Kanawhaians. We got a job to do, lets get to it."

RESULTS
Klavostani Mercenaries are now in the Disputed Region, backing up Shepistani Security Forces in their battle against the Kanawha Mountain People, who are led by Al-Nitrami and Al-Garner

Mr. Jorneau,

You may try Mr. Al-Fakim in your debased, diseased court system. We will not recognize whatever result your sons-of-a-whore jurists find.

Sincerely,
Your Partner in Love And Understanding,
Abdul Hassan Al-Walid
Ministry of Justice.

12th Federal Court
"Your honor, we will prove that Mr. Al-Fakim, knowingly and maliciously, engaged in acts of attempted murder, assault and battery, assault with a knife, assault with a firearm, and violation of the Rules of the Field of Honor(glove full of ball bearings)." The DA said.

The Judge looked down. "Where's Mr. Al-Fakim's defense attorney?"

"Sir, Mr. Al-Fakim has ignored a court summons, and the Republic of Shepistan is refusing extradition. We move to waive his right to a defense attorney."

"Very well, this shall be a short trial." The Judge said.

Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles."

Army House, Shepistan

Al-Fakim slowly entered General Sheppard's office, a black eyepatch over his now-ruined left eye.

With a salute which was returned, he announced his presence to the President.

"So, Suleyman, how did it go?"

"About as well as could be planned, General. I stabbed him with the weapon prepared for me by the Secret Intelligence Directorate; Mr. Mironov should be experiencing the effects of Black Dahalia about...now."

"Good work, Mr Al-Tikriti. I award you the Shepistani Golden Lion for your services to the state."

RESULTS
1.) Al-Fakim really is Al-Tikriti, a top intelligence operative in the SID.
2.) Evan Mironov is now suffering severe cardiac arrest as the time-delayed poison on the Haykim is now taking effect.

Shroomanian Aerospace Defense Weekly

Cuts announced in Shepistani Air Force!

Two Strategic Refuelling Groups consisting of 60 KC-22s
and
Three Bomb Groups consisting of 135 B-56Gs

Will be unilaterally retired in a series of modernizations intended to pay for the MRCA and LAC programs.

The retired aircraft will be also made available on the international market for interested buyers.

Light Attack Craft Selected!

The Shepistani Air Force has selected the Japanistani JA-66 Fire Dragon to be acquired as the A-45 Fire Dragon, to replace it's aging F-84L Thunderjets. 432 will be acquired plus spares for a total program cost of $7 billion over the next three years. While this represents a reduction in the overall number of aircraft available to the reserves; the significantly more capable A-45 will greatly improve the Air Force Reserve's capabilities.

(OOC: the JA-66 is equivalent to the Su-17M4 FITTER, but with a slightly modern targeting pod and a radar in the shock cone intake).

In further news; due to the improved capabilities of the A-45 and the numbers available; the remaining F-100G Fighter Groups will be retired from service and made available on the world market.

Orena Voyvodship Hospital

It was a quiet night at the hospital's OIOM wing. The foreign diplomat who was brought here was in pretty bad shape, but the talented surgeons of the ER managed to stabilize him, and now he was in a deep pharmacological coma.

Most of the nurses left for home now, and only a few remained during the night shift. The two manning the OIOM monitoring station were chatting and joking, as one of them prepared for an hourly check-up of all the patients.

Then the alarm sounded. Mironov's EKG graph was behaving erraticaly.

"Jesus! He's having a cardiac arrest!", screamed one nurse. Fortunately, a doctor was on hand, and came running as soon as he heard the alarm.

Mironov's bodyguards didn't know what to do, and were brutally shoved aside. The doctor checked Mironov quickly, and started rattling off instructions for the nurses.

An hour later, despite best efforts of the finest medical staff PeZookia had to offer, the Foreign Minister of the Old Dominion expired.

Royal Palace, Orena

"Sire?", the aide knocked on the bedroom's door, "Sire, something important just came up."

Ten minutes later, the King was at his desk, rubbing his temples, with a cup of coffee steaming in front of him.

"Poison?", he asked his gathered advisors

"There is no doubt. We are still running chemical analyses, but that has to be it."

"And the bastards had the audacity to be outraged at us attempting to try Al-Fakim."

Nobody commented on that. The assembled generals and aides just looked at each other knowingly.

"All right...Emperor Heraclius has assured me Byzantium stands by us in this matter. The Old Dominion isn't very pleased, either...I need to issue a statement. Now."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Official Communique by the Royal Press Corps

His Majesty the King, in light of evidence clearly implying a planned, premeditated assasination attempt by Shepistani intelligence services, on PeZookian soil, against a diplomat hosted and protected by the PeZookian nation, hereby demands that Shepistani authorities immediately, and without further protest, extradict the assassin to the Old Dominion, to be tried for murder.

Shepistan rejects as utterly false the claims made by Pezookia regarding the death of the Old Dominion's Foreign Minister. Pezookian demands and ultimatums for the extradition of Consul Al-Fakim are utterly false as Pezookia knows well that Shepistani law forbids the extradition of Shepistani Citizens to foreign countries.

(OOC, Just like Russia!)

Secondly, Al-Fakim has left Shepistan, and we have no idea where he is; so even if he was not a Shepistani Citizen, we could not assist you.

Seaside Palace Guest Room, Cannisia

Yuki Amami felt her eyes sore as the flood of information went through her laptop. As King Yenchin's liason with The Halls it had always been an uneventful, easy job, but the past couple of days there has been an enormous burst of info, mainly coming from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense.

During the past few hours, she had been monitoring the recall of Serenity overseas personnel in Shepistan. All of the Serenite civillians had already left when the War of the Cities started. The embassy on the other hand had always been prepared to leave on short notice. Everything sensitive was either destroyed, removed, or extracted leaving no trace. The personnel swiftly left Shepistan via air, and arrived at the Xiang Wenting Memorial Airport safely. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs prepared a short statement which was pending the King's approval. Miss Amami felt that the statement was okay, and transferred it to the King's PDA.

"Good evening, this is Melissa Belle. Due to the events following the Shepistani assassination of Old Dominion Foreign Minister Mironov in Pezookia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has recalled all overseas personnel in Shepistan. They have safely arrived at the Xiang Wenting Memorial Airport an hour ago. At the same time, an order was issued by the MOFA to the Shepistani Embassy to leave Serenity soil in 2 hours. The Shepistani personnel have promptly left half an hour ago with no response...."

Tian Xia Embassy
Annapolis

"Come on people! Everything must go!" yelled the Captain. Around him, personnel were destroying classified documents, most of them getting shredded, then tossed into the incinerator. The classified equipment was also being destroyed, largely by being stacked, then melted by thermite grenades. Half an hour later, the SCIF effectively had nothing it.

Shepistan was considered a hardship posting. Amongst other things, everything you owned had to fit into a chest. Said chests were quickly loaded into the backs of Diplomatic plated trucks and cars, which were then loaded with people. The convoy formed up inside the grounds of the embassy compound, Tian Xian Marines at the front and rear, heading towards the Old Dominium.

The 29th Fighter Squadron was prepared to sortie if anything untoward happened to the embassy personnel. Until then, they sat on the ground, waiting.

News Briefs ...

IRT issues Joint Multirole Fighter requirement: With rapid proliferation of so-called fifth generation and 'interim generation' fighter aircraft around the world, and especially to the North, the RTAF and RTN have issued a joint requirement for a carrier-capable, heavy multirole strike aircraft intended to operate aboard RTN large carriers and in forward airbases. Current F-118 Hornet fighters have perceived range and payload issues with defense planners consider insufficient to replace in-service F-110 Phantom fighters.

Defense analysts at the Khan Institute have noted that the in-service F-14 Tomcat series widely used abroad and the Su-33 series would provide the best option of the so-called fourth generation and that the IRT is unlikely to be able to afford a new, fifth-generation heavy fighter. However, even the cost of those fighters may be prohibitive; General Statics-Dynamics has proposed an enlarged and modified F-118 design at lower cost and greater payload ...

Formal approval of UART: As widely expected since the gala ball commemorating the initial signing of the United Atomic Research Treaty, the board of directors have formally approved entry into the UART Organization (UARTO). Energy Division issued a press release noting that "improved international cooperation" would improve stability across the world and the the benefits of nuclear energy would further improve the lives of all. The cost benefits of international cooperation are expected to be substantial ...

FUN Summit Incident: Foreign Division provided little comment on the recent events in the FUN summit, noting that these events were "internal matters" for Shepistan and the Old Dominion. Further notes were issued that the IRT embassies within Shepistan would not be closed and that the IRT would provide diplomatic intermediary services between the MESS and the IRT if asked.

Contract Signed with the Old Dominion: Continuing revenue from the Old Dominion contracts improve today with $6.25M in undefined revenue from the Old Dominion Tribal Development agency ...

Systems Integration Contract with Shepistan: General Statics-Dynamics has been awarded the systems integration contract for the new Shepistani light attack-trainer aircraft. GSD will install modern avionics and sensors on the new light attack birds ...

Orena, PeZookia

Secretary of State Wright was in his room, awaiting the expected order to evacuate the embassy in Shepistan. He had already given the order to have them destroy all sensitive material, and was now awaiting Presidential authorization.

His laptop pinged, and he looked at the message. Nodding his head, he picked up the secure telephone and gave the order.

***********

Annapolis, Shepistan

The ambassador and his people worked fast. They loaded up in their motorcade and left for the airport, where a Shinra aircraft was waiting for them. They passed the Shepistani guards at the fence, who gave them barely a second glance; foreign mission personnel leaving the country had become almost routine lately. Less than half an hour later they were in the air and over international waters, on the way back to the Republic.

***********

Canissian Network News (CNN)

In an announcement from the Republic of PeZookia, Shinra Republic Secretary of State Warren Wright announced today that the Shinra Republic embassy in Shepistan had been closed today, and embassy personnel were already enroute back to the Republic.

Continuing the trend of embassy closings in light of the assassination of Old Dominion Foreign Minister Evan Miranov, Secretary Wright also stated that Shepistan diplomatic personnel had been declared persona non grata and were ordered to leave the Shinra Republic within two hours. Reports from Midgar indicate the Shepistani diplomats are in the process of doing so, and Shinra police have cordoned off the area to prevent any demonstrations and to safeguard the diplomats to the airport, where a Shepistani aircraft waits for them under military guard.

Elsewhere in the Shinra Republic, anonymous Navy officials tell CNN they have found a naval mine, belived to be similar to a type that impacted the frigate Harrier. Five SRN sailors died in that incident. The frigate, which returned safely to the Los Angeles naval base...

****************

Seaside Palace, Canissia

President Shinra had already known about the mine, of course. But having some anonymous asshole or assholes unknown leak it to the press pissed him off royally.

He turned back to his fellow MESS leaders. "The mine, supposedly, is one of ours. It dates back to World War II." That wasn't exactly what this world called it, he vaugely remembered. But rather than try to dig up that specific memory, he went with the term he knew everyone, in this room at least, would understand.

"An accident?" asked Wilkens. He sounded more hopeful than convinced.

"No doubt that's what the news will run with. 'Old MESS mine strikes Navy ship, scandal erupts' or some other bullshit. But we checked. The records are old, but this mine was listed as having never been deployed, and eventually surplused off."

"Gee, I wonder who put it out in service," snarled Lonestar. Nobody ventured an answer. They didn't have to.

"Good luck proving it, though." This from Coyote, who sighed heavily.

"It's definately more subtle than knifing a diplomat in a crowded reception hall," Beowulf said. "I guess he is capable of subtlty, something we're going to have to keep in mind."

Rufus shook his head. They had been trying to formulate MESS policy, and had made some progress. But Shep kept stirring the damn pot, it seemed almost every other day now. "Nothing we can do about it now, though I'm running ASW patrols along my coastline and I've increased AWACs patrols to cover more of the airspace. If he tries to plant anything else near me, we'll either catch him at it...or sink an 'unknown, presumed hostile' subsurface contact. I'd suggest we all do the same. Now, if we could get back to why we were here in the first place..."

**********

Results:
If anybody plans on sailing submarines near my coastline in the near future, I'd highly recommend giving me plenty of advance notice. Anything lurking around out there we didn't know about ahead of time will most likely be engaged.

The Bureau of Military Information, outside of Williamsburg

LTG Sharpe glanced down at the report.

"So, he's an SID agent? Why? Why would they do something like this?" He picked up the printed out Powerpoint and shook it at his aide. "It doesn't make a damn bit of sense. The Lord Fairfax was going to pursue a Peace Agreement, for God's shake."

"We can have our agents prepare for retaliatory action..."

"No."

The aide, a Major in the ODAAF, was stunned.

"Beg pardon, sir?"

"Orders straight from the Lord Fairfax. We are not going to go around offing cabinet members of Shepistan. The Lord Fairfax has offered an alternate course of action." He paused, put the report in an unmarked folder, then pushed a button to his EA. "Send him in."

A tall, thin man that was twitching came walking in. He appeared to be in the traditional Kanawha robes, although, for some reason, he looked very out of place. He looked as if he was going through some serious withdrawls."

"Who..." the Major began.

"Major, this man is named Garner, he runs several Kanawha tribes in Shepistan, but than isn't as important as the story he has told us..."

Former Tian Xia Embassy, Annapolis

"Come on, Move it! Move it!" shouted Colonel Al-Tikriti as he directed the Special Construction Battalion onto the hilltop where the newly-vacated Tian Xian embassy stood.

The embassy had been built in older times; and it dated back to 1887; a time of much better relationships between Shepistan and Tian Xia; to the point where it was placed in one of the most prolific locations in Annapolis.

After relations with Shepistan had soured, the Embassy had become a highly prolific SIGINT/ELINT outpost by the fifties; sprouting a veritable forest of antennas, sucking in all the electronic enamanations that happened in Annapolis, and then forwarding them to the MESS.

It had been long a thorn in the side of the SID; and despite Shepistani offers of building for free a brand new embassy four times the size of the old one on Embassy Row; Tian Xia had refused the offers over the years. Now; with the ambassadors and spies gone, the bulldozers were at work erasing the mistake of a hundred years ago.

Annapolis, Shepistan

The call had been later than Ambassador Padilla had expected, but it did come. As he heard the formal order of Cascadia's severence of relations with Shepistan, he figured that the order had been delayed coming through due to this whole Velestria issue.
The President wasn't done with him yet, unfortunately. It seemed that his reputation for serving as a decent ambassador in high-tension areas was getting him into another job. After the short-range plane brought the embassy staff to Old Dominion for the connecting flight to Seattle, he would be put on board a different flight to Jasser, the provisional capital of the "Republic" of al-Akharabat. From a sociopath-led dictatorship to a failed Velestrian state, Padilla sighed mentally. He could only guess his reassignment to the area was due to the recent Japanistani excursion into Velestria.
He made the proper calls and the Embassy personnel began evacuation procedures.
A phone call was then placed to the Shepistani Foreign Ministry informing them that the Republic of Cascadia was severing diplomatic relations due to "an outrage unmatched in the history of international diplomacy", namely the blatant assassination of Old Dominion Foreign Minister Mironov by Shepistani security services.

As Padilla removed everything of value from his office, he figured his counterpart in Adams District was doing the same thing after being notified of his persona non grata status.

Shinra Republic Airbase

The AN-22 full of the Shepistani Ambassadorial staff thundered off the runway, it's four turboprops laboring mightily to lift it's 49.5 ton payload off the runway.

Not only was the Ambassadorial staff on board, along with any secret equipment that had been removed from the embassy; most of the payload deck was filled with double stacked containers containing the full Shinra Republic Budget and Discussion documents for FY08 and early discussions for FY09 and FY10, which had been obtained through the Shinra GPO.

The 5th Division fell from the sky, right on schedule, right on target. Not only the men, but their supplies as well--

With the 1st Pathfinders Brigade of the 5th Airborne Division, came the Airborne Armored Regiment, with their small "Weasel-2A" armored vehicles-- small, light, fast, and able to pack a variety of weapons, including TOWs, 20mm Bushmasters, mortars, and air-defense artillery. The Weasel-2A was vulnerable to anything bigger than a 7.62, it was true, but it would do against any Velerian resistance--

--but none was expected.

After all, contact had been made with what passed for a government at al-Akharabat, and a small number of th elocal "Selous Scouts" had been dispatched to help guide in the Canissian troops.

The Canissians promised aid-- food, clean water, medicine, roads, power, stability-- would it be enough to bring peace to the troubled, corrupt land?

Shepistan Embassy
Hong Kong
Tian Xia
4 am local time

The man pounded on the embassy door. It was closed for the night. When the guard opened it, the guard saw that the man was outfitted in body armor, and was holding a scroll. "Public Security section 2. By order of the Emperor, this mission has been declared persona non grata. All members of the mission must leave by the next available flight, which is in 1 hour. Those who do not wish to take that flight may be detained by Public Security. You will be escorted from the embassy to the Hong Kong International by Public Security. Transportation will be provided to the airport. Any personal goods remaining will be shipped to Shepistan."

The embassy hurriedly commenced destruction of their classified materials, in accordance with existing procedures. That completed, they boarded the provided busses, and left for the airport. Five minutes after the mission left, demolition charges blew, damaging its buildings on Embassy Row. Debris scattered, damaging many of the structures facing the embassy, with the brunt of the damage applying to the Incorporated Republic of Tonkin's embassy across the street.

Once there, it was unsurprising that some of the mission declined the flight. It was obvious that some had been taken in by the freeness, and, for that matter, the much greater living standard, available in Tian Xia. What was surprising was that the station resident, the embassy's chief spy was one of those that stayed. Those that did stay were quickly taken into protective custody by Public Security, to be given new names and new lives.

Aberdeen, Shepistan, 45 minutes later

The SID men were nothing if efficient, albeit a bit brutal as they smashed their way into Abdul Al-Hayidd's home in Aberdeen. All Shepistani officials who went abroad were required to have their families live in the closed military city of Aberdeen for the duration of their assignment for "security reasons".

With brutal efficiency, they dragged Al-Hayidd's family out and into the waiting armored APCs, where they would be taken to the notorious Clarksburg prison complex, where a series of videos would be taken for distribution to Tian Xia, whom Abdul had unwisely chosen to defect to.

If Abdul truly cared about his family, he would have to return to Shepistan. If he didn't care about his family, Tian Xia would have obtained the services of a monumentally corrupt man whose word could not be trusted if he was willing to betray his family...

It was rare for Tug Captain Higa Shōji to be on the bridge so late at night, but sometimes he enjoyed the darkness and the quarter moon reflecting off the water. The big tug needed only twenty men to keep its three diesel electric generators running, while 500 feet behind on a cable the tugs cargo, an army barge loaded with cement and prefabricated steel buildings, was completely unmanned. The barge was to be delivered to the newly named Japanistan No.1 Velaria Coast Guard Operating Base.

From time to time Shōji glanced at the radar display, showing an utter lack of surface contracts, but it was rarely on his mind that the radar, located as it was above the bridge, did not scan a considerable gap aft of the ship.

5 miles away, a pair of JH-101 Air Duck helicopters flown by the Japanistani Special Imperial Guard Force crept behind the tug and tow and into position. Aboard each helicopter was a small ridged hull inflatable boat, along with six kill squad operators from the super elite 80th Very Special Missions Raiding Battalion, airlifted out to Velaria in the uniforms of laborers just hours before.

Both boats went into the water as the helicopters flew slowly just skimming the waves, before peeling away to refuel from a JCK-12 Flying Mule turboprop tanker, the regular duty aircraft, which would service a number of other transport and patrol chopper sorties during the night without ever knowing its true involvement. The zodiacs quickly moved in behind the barge; maintain a concealed position from any observers on the Tug, while slowly overtaking. The tug was barely moving at eight knots behind its wallowing cargo, but in open water a small boat was little faster.

Over an hour later, the boats had crept to within striking distance, the Japanistani commandoes maintaining constant night vision observation of the vessel while preparing weapons. Each operator had one of several models of AK-47 rifle, common weapons in al-Akharabat, along with an equally common RPG-7 in each boat.

“Climb Mount Banazi!” ordered the kill squad commander over a small voice radio, simultaneously activating a beacon which signaled a JBE-22 Red Cloud jammer bomber flying 50 miles further north to be prepared to commence silent radio communications jamming as soon as any emission from the tug was detected.

On the order both RPGs were fired, the grenades blasting off to impact the rear of the superstructure. Minor damage to a ship of over two thousand tons, but the blasts awoke most of the crew and spread confusion. On the bridge Captain Shōji was surprised by the rockets, but the follow-up bursts of automatic gunfire and tings of the bullets hitting the were fully expected. Pirates… he’d been ordered at the last minute to take the fastest, shortest route to the new base against his objections and now pirates were attacking!

“Radio for the Navy!” he snapped to the sole watchkeeper, who doubled as radio operator and helmsmen thanks to the ships autopilot capabilities. “They’ll want the location of the ships safe,” he said, and also he hoped, being kidnapped for ransom by untamed savages with rifles would be decidedly unpleasant.
“No response on the radio,” yelled back the terrified seamen, “nothing, it’s just silent on every channel I transmit on.

The gunfire was much closer now, the pirates had made it onto the deck, and before Shōji could finish dogging the hatches one was forced open with a prybar. He found himself face to face with a back hooded commando, who immediately gunned him down with a long burst of 7.62mm, before riddling down the radio operator as well.

“Clear the rest of the ship, twenty men, confirm by actual body count, then find the safe in the executive officers cabin on B deck.” Ordered the commandos leader, before kneeling down beside the fallen captain, who was remarkably still breathing, abet clearly fatally wounded through the chest and torso.
“You have died in the Emperors glorious service,” said the commando.

“But… the safe..” Shōji was delirious and passed into unconsciousness; he would be dead two minutes later.
“We have the ships blue prints,” said the commando. “but thank you old man.”

Twenty minutes later the last crewman was gunned down as he attempted to jump over the side to escape, and the commandos assembled back on the bridge with the ships safe, torn from its mountings by brute force. The commandoes had also searched and robbed the sailors pockets, while spreading Khat leaves, bits of rolling tobacco and even a few samples of Velaria earth were left behind. As the commandoes made their exit the safe and other loot was simply thrown over the side, while the men ropped back down to the fast boats to circle off to be picked up.

The auto pilot was left locked on a course for the al-Akharabat coast, where the ship would run aground with tow later in the day, riddled with bullet holes and with blood splattered walls as tribute to the viscous ‘pirate’ attack which had befallen the ship.

Before the sun could rose again the operators and pilots of the 80th Very Special Missions Raiding Battalion where already back on the ground in Velaria, and were at once hustled into a departing JC-22 cargo plane for the flight back to Japanistan and immediate reassignment to the deep jungle swamps of New Sumatra.

Indhopal at the FUN Conference

Indhopal's Foreign minister, Hans Vortisch, spoke at the FUN conference today. His main goal was to garner further support for Indhopal's joint particle accelerator and nuclear research projects. Shroomania and Byzantium had already expressed a deep interest in the particle accelerator projects. Vortisch sent out the call again, asking for other nations to support the initiative. Indhopal has so far put up $5 billion for the construction of the particle accelerators this year alone and has pledged $2 billion for joint research into the peaceful use of nuclear energy with Byzantium.

Near the border with the CFR

The militants would not listen to reason. Many of them didn't want peace; Indhopal had been their enemy for generations. They would not stop their raids. Perhaps they thought Indhopal's government wouldn't act. The MDC party had been extremely cautious in the past.

Now was different. The government under the new president Raj Ahten was for more willing to take risks . The troops were sent in. First covert teams from the Inter Services Intelligence Agency sprung into action. Mainly they just passed hard currency into the hands of militia allies.

The Special Reconnaissance Group (SRG), Indhopal's elite commando force, was already in the CFR gathering intelligence and planning strikes on the militant's bases. The SFG troops were operating deep behind enemy lines. It was what they were best at.

North Coast of The Untamed Land of Velaria
Japanistan No.1 Velaria Coast Guard Operating Base

The name was distatestful to General Sado Tōkairin, but officially providing for coastal lifesaving was the objective of the entire operation, which had now put 20,000 of his Japanistani SNLF and engineers onto the continent. The work was going well too, equipped with the land clearing blade system 50 ton bulldozers were handily pushing back the jungle, leveling dozens of acres per day. Defoliatiant and pesticide spraying ahead of the deforestation effort had begun with several An-2 and JC-120 Dash Hauler transports that had been flown in and equipped with storage tanks and spray booms, flying off the newly improved runway which had already been lengthen to 8,000 feet with steel matting.

Excavations for the foundation of a new 12,000 feet strip were already beginning, but serious work would have to await the arrival of several additional shiploads of material, and the competition of the concrete mixing plant. Everywhere precautions were put into place to fight back the danger of disease. Drainage was being installed into camp areas, while special tents warded off insects and pesticide fogging machines ran constantly, blanking the surrounding terrain in clouds of death. Several more men had fallen to mysterious animal attacks, but razor wire and land mines had proven effective deterrents around the airfield, which for the time being was all that mattered besides the small diamond mine 20 miles further inland, now run by its previous owners under the watch of a detached SNLF company.

Rumors ran rampant among the garrison that the foreign powers had landed nearby, occupying the ravaged Republic of al-Akharabat and challenging Japanistans power. What the reaction would be, no one new, as just one more in a steady stream of air transports landed, a group of merchant ships continued to unload offshore.

Central Frequesue Republic

The sky above the target areas in the CFR with Coilerburg planes and helicopters as the country launched Operation Extravaganza. 2,900 men from the 16th Airborne Brigade and the 1st Independent Naval Battalion sat in their aircraft as they soared towards the mines that were their objective.

By the end of the day, the troops had been landed at the mines while Coilerburg planes of all sorts, from old F-4s to modern Gripens launched strikes against militant positions.

North Coast of The Untamed Land of Velaria
Japanistan No.1 Velaria Coast Guard Operating Base

With a roar of reversing props, the KC-22 in Shepistani SAC Colors rumbled down the improvised runway, coming to a stop well before the runway ended in jungle.

As the airplane taxiied to it's parking location, General Tōkairin drove up to the transport in one of the jeeps that were proliferating on the base. As the door to the transport opened, he snapped off a tight salute to the Shepistani personnel emerging.

They may be barbarians, but they're our barbarians, he thought.

"General," began Colonel-General Al-Khalid as he stepped off the transport.

"You certainly have done a lot with this area in such a short time."

"Indeed we have. The four thousand meter runway is only now beginning to be laid out. We expect completion in a month."

"Would you mind, in accordance with the Shepistani/Japanistani Treaty of Eternal Friendship And Cooperation, if my own surveyors and engineers check out the area for a base of our own? We plan to base perhaps a Bomb Group or Patrol Group out here."

"That is acceptable," grunted Tōkairin. "However, I must warn you, we still have not fully driven the jungle beasts to an acceptable perimeter; so I suggest your men only go in pairs and fully armed."

State Munitions Factory 241, Landover, Shepistan

"So you see, General Sheppard, the workers at Factory 241 have been hard at work at producing the A-47 Attack Drones at the rate of 100 a week."

Image
A-47 Attack Drone

"How good is this drone, Director Al-Wakim?" asked Sheppard.

"It can deliver a 100 lb payload to about 1,000 nautical miles, or a 400 lb payload to about 350 nautical miles. Top speed is around 100 knots."

"Cost?"

"Around $129,000 each, General. But we are confident with further production, we can get the cost under $100,000."

"Any further improvements planned?"

"Well, we plan for the A-47B series to have home on jam capability on various types of threat radar. Price will go up to about $190,000; but otherwise they will be indistinguishable from these A-47As."

"Seems awfully slow, Director."

"I know. We have the XA-48 on the drawing boards now. Pulse-jet powered for maximum cheapness; which will raise top speed to 390 MPH, and most likely will be cheaper to produce. We'll switch to that in a few months when the A-47 series ends it's production run."
