News Broadcast

The speech of Cascadian President Garrett was broadcast around the world - not an often sight for the usually neutral, if friendly, Republic - for the benefit of the global audience and to make the position clear. Having considered briefly giving the speech from the deck of the Intrepid, the President had finally opted for doing so at the pierside. It was considered a concession to not seeming too aggressive, though for him and for those like him watching, it might've simply seemed like avoiding allegory to the infamous aircraft carrier speech by George W. Bush in '03.

"The decision by my office to establish the forward post at Van Halstoff... was made solely as a defensive gesture, in protection of friendly republics along the northern shore of the great Continent. The Republic of Cascadia will maintain the forward post as a sign to these nations that they are still in the company of friends.

While we will resolutely defend the friends of the Republic, we do not mean ill will toward the nation of Japanistan nor do we intend to act against their existing foothold in Velestria. We welcome any signs from their Empire that their intentions are as ultimately peaceful as our own.

Similarly, I am supportive of the operation begun by the Kingdom of Canissia... to stablize the torn republic of al-Akharabat. I am aware that Japanistan has also sought to bring peace to that nation and I express my hopes that we can all, in common cause, bring an end to piracy and suffering in that poor region....."

By the time the speech was over, Stephen had hoped that it might do something to defuse the tensions in the region. As he walked away from the podium, a naval aide came running up, barely having time to salute before offering the President a slip of paper.

AL-AKHARABAT AIRFIELDS BOMBED BY UNKNOWN, PRESUMED JAPANISTANI, AIRCRAFT. INT'L FLIGHTS TO JASSER SUSPENDED. VAN HALSTOFF BASE AND DEFIANT COG ON HIGH ALERT.

The President crumbled the piece of paper in his fist. He'd just made an offer of support and friendship... while Japanistan had been bombing an innocent country.

"Send word to the Capitol, I want a meeting with the Joint Chiefs the moment I arrive," he grumbled as he headed to the chopper. Taking up his secured phone, he called straight to the Department of State. "Get on the horn with our ambassadors to Canissia, Shinra, Serenity, even Zoria. I want you to sound them out on their reactions to this Japanistani operation...."

"Tell them to expect company."

This was the word from President Shinra. Of course, his diplomats and military planners were decidedly more verbose in their communications.

*********

Enroute to Van Holstoff

The battalion of Shinra Republic paratroopers had loaded up on their transports hours before and were now on the way to join the Cascadian paratroopers and Marines in Velestria. The battalion commander knew that his men were, in essence, a tripwire. Japanistan now had to figure on Shinra Republic troopers - and by extension a possible MESS response - if they attempted any action against Cascadian forces.

He didn't like being a tripwire, but such were his orders.

*********

Midgar, Shinra Republic

President Shinra was in a less than pleasent mood. Japanistan had no particular legal right to summarily declare all those airfields to be closed. His paratroopers - who had landed safely in the Cascadian base only an hour ago, were his first response. Now he was crafting what he would do next. He got on the phone and asked to speak to King Arik in Canissia. Together, they'd plot an idea and present it to the MESS.

Japanistan National Command Bunker No.7
500km outside of Super Mega New Tokyo

Special Field Marshal Suchiidetsu Ichiro watched over the videolink as the Shepistani General made his proposal. None were allowed into Command Bunker Seven, unless their families had been checked to the fourth generation back for any dissidents; and it was absolutely out of the question for foreign gaijin like General Al-Khalid. So all official meetings with Japanistan's leaders had to be done over secure videolink.

"So Special Field Marshal Ichiro, Shepistan would like to, under our Treaty of Eternal Friendship and Cooperation, develop an airfield in your province of New Sumatra for our own use. It will be a very minor field. Just for a single Bomb Wing."

Ichiro considered this for a moment. The Shepistanis never thought small. "Single Bomb Wing" really meant four Bomb Groups; some 180 aircraft. After a moment's silence, he responded.

"Japanistan is more than happy to welcome our brothers in arms in developing New Sumatra into a prosperous part of the Empire. However, some restrictions shall apply on your operations in New Sumatra. Unless approved by the Emperor himself, no offensive missions shall be flown from your airbase. Secondly, you shall not stage reconnaisance flights from this airbase. The risk to Japanistan is unacceptable otherwise."

"That's acceptable," replied Al-Khalid.

"I must warn you, General, that Japanistan intends on enforcing these restrictions. We are not like the barbarians who talk and talk and do nothing. In Japanistan, we take action." warned Ichiro.

Shepistan is starting construction on a huge bomber airfield in New Sumatra, Japanistan; enabling their bombers to reach the following countries without aerial refuelling:

Closed-Door Meeting, Board of Directors

" It's agreed then? " The board had decided - it was time to act. While cooperation with Shepistan and Japanistan was profitable, the Republic must look to the long term. Those powers would provide a counter to the titan that is the MESS: the other two alliances were far more insular, and more importantly, not the neighbor of three very powerful nations to the north.

" It's agreed. Continue working to maintain the balance of power between the various power blocs. Begin work on securing the eastern regions of Veleria against foreign intrigue. "

On the projector-wall was a map of the region, the Japanistani, Canassian and Cascadian events outposts, the recent conflicts - all the data they had available. " New Olympia, Akori and Rangatara should be stabilized. We should easily be able to negotiate rights there for economic development and resource exploration.

" Elsewhere, we have fewer options, and will likely require securing significant number of private military contractors to ensure the security of our resourcing operations there. Finally, Hadhramara's pirates must be neutralized or at least marginalized if resourcing operations yield as expected ... "

10km off the north coast of al-Akharabat
Near Al-Sukin City, a modest port

Convoy No.2 Velaria had already broken up. A smaller fishing port 100km the east near the of the north east boarder of al-Akharabat would be seized by a an Alligator and one Ropucha LST carrying a reinforced SNLF mechanized company task force with engineering support. They had orders to build a fire base to over watch the port and await further support. 50km to the west Al-Sukin meanwhile the remainder of the SNLF battalion would go ashore to seize another small fishing port that might be capable of handling larger cargos.

The hammer blow would fall on Al-Sukin. While Convoy No.2 had been loaded to establish a defended air base, it still had the three remaining mechanized infantry battalions of the 1st Sasebo SNLF Mixed Brigade Landing Force and its tank battalion to make the initial landing, augmented with two additional SNLF military security battalions with more then enough firepower to handle local opposition. All five battalions would swim ashore from the LSTs in BTR series armored personal carrier. The more numerous SNLF engineering troops, and the army and air force engineer, SAM and coast defence troops in the convoys freighters would be landed by conventional landing craft, lighters and eventually over the captured quays of Al-Sukin.

The LSTs, so recently visitors at Lunga up the coast only a few weeks before turned towards the coast together, a lone Ivan Rouge LSD coming up behind. All the ships opened fire with 122mm rocket launchers as they approached, the rockets bursting with smoke warheads to help shield the invasion force in the event of resistance on the beach. In any event, none was initially encountered as over a hundred armored vehicles pulled out of the water and began moving inland. Local milita began to fight back… but few could even afford an RPG-7 let alone use it, and rifles and a scattering of machine guns could do little against BTR-80s and PT-85 light tanks. Offshore the old semi dreadnought Aki awaited targets for its big guns to blast the SNLF to victory.

Meanwhile Convoy No.3 Velaria, hastily loaded with the equipment of the regular 29th infantry division and certain EGJF attachments on predominantly civilian ships taken over for military service, was already approaching.

The Foreign Minister of Indhopal sent a reply that he was eager to start the FTO conference, as a great number of issues should be discussed by the alliance.

Comunication Adressed to Japanistan's Leadership
The President of Indhopal's office sent the following message:
We would like Japanistan to clarify the purpose of its base on the "untamed continent." What are Japanistan's intentions in that part of he world?

"Mr. President, check this out."

The leader of Coilerburg looked at the aerial photographs taken over Lake Shroombee. "You could stuff thousands of men in all those boats."

"Exactly. Minoy smells weakness. They've scraped together everything that floats on Lake Shroombee and are sending as many men as they can against the CFR. They figure that it's about to collapse, and want to take over what's left."

"But they have plenty of mines themselves. Why would they want to take such a large and risky operation, especially if it means possibly picking a fight with us?"

"First question-you can never have too much money to buy you mansions and shiny military gear. Second question-they beat us once, and think that they can do it again."

President Jeffrey thought hard. "What does the air force plan to do?"

"They're awaiting your decision."

Oh shit... President Jeffrey thought hard. Every second he spent thinking was more Minoy troops landed in the CFR. And yet, he had a reputation for irrational, poorly-thought out knee-jerk reactions. He didn't want to do anything stupid, but it would be best to-.

"I authorize airstrikes against the Minoy invasion fleet." He hoped it was the right choice. His worry was that Minoy would go after Coilerburg's mines regardless of what they did, and their invasion force would be much harder to take out when they were not on easily-spotted boats.

As soon as the authorization was given, Coilerburg planes were armed and took off for Lake Shroombee....

"Colonel Al-Hayidd, this conversation is being recorded. Please state your full name for the record," said the interrogator.

"Abdul ibn Abdurrashid ibn Karim Al-Hayidd," said Col. Al-Hayidd.

"Why did you decide to defect?"

"Because I've been spying for the Tian Xians for the past 5 years."

"Why did you decide to spy for us?"

"I grew disaffected with the Shepistani regime. And the promise of money once I defected."

"What about the family you left behind?"

"I grew estranged from them quite some time ago."

"Your wife and children?"

"My wife was a whore, and those kids aren't mine."

"How did you pass your information to us?"

"It was rather simple, actually. Since I was the Resident, I controlled the legal agents. I simply had them make dead drops. Since they didn't know what was in the drop, they never knew that it wasn't instructions being given to the SID spys in country, but rather was information for my handler to get."

"Good evening, this is Melissa Belle. Last night, we recieved a shocking video purportedly from Shepistan. Those of you with younger viewers may want to remove them. It is an extraordinarily graphic and disturbing video. We'll get to that after the first story..."

...

"And now for the top story tonight. This video was directed to Colonel Abdul Al-Hayidd, who recently defected from Shepistan. We'll let the video speak for itself."

The show cuts to the beginning of the video:
A man in a somewhat ornate uniform is in the middle of the frame. "Abdul! You know the penalty for defecting! We have your wife and kids here!" The camera pans to the side, showing two children and a fairly pretty woman. It then returns to the uniformed man. "Return soon, and you may be able to get your wife and one of your kids back!" The man nods, and then the camera pans back to the children. The younger child is lifted by another uniformed man(in a significantly less ornate uniform), and dragged, his mother lunging for him. All the while, the camera tracks the child.

"Noooo! Please don't hurt my baby! Please!" she pleaded. It didn't matter to the man, who stopped by a large piece of machinery. He hit a switch, causing a loud whining sound to begin from machine. Using a rope already hanging from a pulley, the man tied the child's hands. He then pulled the child up with the rope, and pushed the child's feet into the opening at the top of the machine. He slowly began lowering the child in the machine. The child shortly began screaming, and blood red liquid could be seen pooling underneath it. The man continued to lower the child until the screaming of the child stopped, though the screaming of the mother continued.

The camera panned back to the first man, now standing by the woman. He slaps her, several times, until she finally stops screaming. "But Abdul, that isn't the only thing!" He pulls out a knife, and cuts the clothing from her body, being none too careful about not cutting her. Eventually, she's naked. He motions more uniformed men forward who then proceeded to brutally rape her, both vaginally and anally, sometimes at the same time.

After they finish, they then start cutting her lightly with knives, and pour salt on the wounds. The camera pans back to the leader. "Abdul, come home soon." With that the video ends.

The show comes back, Melissa Belle looks obviously green, and in the background, several people could be heard retching.

Battlegroup 4, operating in support of WHIRLWIND '08

The Indepenence had received new orders:

Code: Select all

--++OPERATIONAL IMMEDIATE/TOP SECRET++--
TO: COMBATGRU FOUR
FROM: COMWESTFLT

Detach PHIBRON FOUR (inclu CG LEVIATHAN, DDG MAJESTIC, DDG GLADIATOR, FFG ARCHANGEL) and proceed to Velestria. You are to remain NLT 22 NM off coastline. Observe via most expeditious means activities around sea lanes and coastal areas along territory known as al-Akharabat. DO NOT REPEAT DO NOT overfly area designated as "No.1 Velaria Coast Guard Operating Base" by Japanistani government.
--++OPERATIONAL IMMEDIATE/TOP SECRET++--
Had the Shinra Naval command known about the new landings by Japanistani forces, they would have ordered their carrier and its recon aircraft to avoid direct overflights of those regions, as well. So far, however, no public announcement had been made.

((OOC: Basically I'm having AWACs and ELINT snoop around out there. I'll do photo recon missions, but not directly overflying known land positions of Japanistani troops. Of course anything unknown may get overflown since they wouldn't receive orders to avoid it. If Skimmer makes public those other two landings, orders may be considered automatically amended to avoid direct overflight of those areas as well, regardless of whether I make a post about it or not.))

EDIT: ((OOC: It is also not a permanent presence. They're basically running along the coast, doing a big circle of the place, then they'll leave and go elsewhere. At least, that's the plan.))

Official Announcement of the Republic of Cascadia

The Cascadian Republic condemns the Japanistani bombing of sites in al-Akharabat and the invasion of that nation by Japanistani troops. Neither does Cascadia recognize the right of Japanistan to order neutral and free shipping to not enter al-Akharabat ports.

CFR War News

Indhopal's military strikes into the CFR had been very successful. The Special Reconnaissance Group had proved its worth by guiding in the boys from the 2nd Para and launching lightning quick strikes of their own. The use of local allied militias was also invaluable. Indhopal's forces seized a total of 8 areas of strategic interest near the border. 2 were airstrips seized using classic airborne tactics. The militants in the area were expected no attack at all and mostly fled into the woods. The other six sites were mining areas and were heavily defended. A combination of airstrikes from jets and helicopters and airmobile operations quickly neutralized resistance at all but one mine, which was guarded the Iron Tigers militia group. They were commanded by veterans of the war with Coilerburg and had high training standards for their men.

Image
Iron Tiger Militiamen

The Iron Tigers had well laid defenses. Scouting operations by the SRG was the only thing that prevented well sighted machine guns and auto cannon from ravaging the Para's helicopters. Creeping within yards of the militia's positions, the SRG men noted the position of every HMG nest. Then right before the Para's swooped in the guns were destroyed with precision airstrikes called in by the SRG's forward observers.

Despite the complete surprise achieved by this attack, the Iron Tigers fought hard to keep their mine and retreated in good order only after it was clear that the fighting was hopeless. The fact that the Iron Tigers leadership escaped was particularly worrisome to Indhopal's planners. They were likely to cause trouble and Indhopal's local militia allies refused to go into the forests after the Iron Tigers.

3rd Reconnaissance Squadron
Guangzhou East Airbase

"Change of plans, gentlemen, we're no longer going to be part of WHIRLWIND '08. Now we're getting deployed to the Byzantine Empire. We're to keep track of Japanistani movements in al-Akharabat. We'll be joined by two of the prototype YF-12Ds. Also deploying will be elements of the 5th Reconnaissance Squadron, and the 81st Airborne Air Control Squadron.

al-Akharabat

The Combat Control Team had landed the previous night. It was a fairly dry area of the country, resulting in not much ground cover. Nearby, there was a town, almost certainly willing to help for money (or for that matter, food). The Japanistanis had mined all the airfields, but you couldn't stop a new one from being created. The most important part was merely labor. After a rough strip had been constructed, the 820th RED HORSE would arrive, and begin construction.

Shroom's Fighting Aircraft

R-1C Habu

32 in service with the Tian Xian Air Force. Twin Engined Reconnaissance plane. Deliveries began in 1966. Original order was 36 aircraft. It is currently powered by the J58-P8 engine. This engine provides a significant decrease in fuel consumption over the original J58 engine. It is known to be able to accelerate through the sound barrier in level flight. It carries a significant fit of optical cameras, allowing high resolution pictures to be taken from at least 85,000 feet. It's official maximum speed is Mach 3.2.

Communication to Indhopal

Japanistan demands peace and harmony on the far flank of the empire, and has established a base for coastal lifesaving patrols and transport flights in its own acknowledged territory. Intervention in the north of Al-Akharabat has been necessitated by the murderous rampage of local barbarians, who will be found and destroyed for the greater peace and order of the country. Japanistan only desires to bring development to this long abandon land, and has invited Canissia into the JAPF peacekeeping command structure. All air ports have been closed owing to reliable intelligence reports of extensive mercenary and arms smuggling activities throughout Al-Akharabat. Once fully deployed the Japanistan 1st Expeditionary Peacekeeping Force will choke off all sources of illegal weapons and disarm local militias allowing for the creation of a stable government.

Imperial Chronicles

The base in Jerusalem was very busy these days. Aircraft were flying in and out of the air base, making reconnaissance flights, monitoring the airspace around the region. Things were about to get busier when orders came down to prepare raw materials to be sent to Arabia to set up the bases there.

Legio III Athens Comitatenses were given the orders to move to Arabia. To be deployed there and rotated with Legio XIV Korinth Kataphrateoi, the division will be there to protect Byzantine facilities. In addition, 16th Air Defence Brigade operating S-300VM will be deployed there as well. Kontos Munitions was contracted to build a Aegis defence facility. A B767AEW&C aircraft will be redeployed to Arabia to monitor the skies.

The base will take months to finish and harden, but nevertheless, Byzantine military presence will ensure the safety of the region and protect the oil facilities. Both Caliphates were informed, and as expected the Egyptians weren't happy but their diplomatic protests were merely noted.

Personal Message from the President of the Shinra Republic to the Emperor of Japanistan

The Shinra Republic recognizes that the threat of piracy is a matter of grave concern. Thus, it is my intention to aid the noble people of Japanistan and her brave soldiers in protecting against the scourge of pirates in or around the area of al-Akharabat, Velestria.

To that end, the carrier Independence has been dispatched to being initial anti-piracy patrols in the area. Further efforts will be continued by other ships of the Shinra Republic Navy on a regular rotation.

We will of course work in conjunction with Japanistani naval and air forces already in the region. While port rights are not expected to be necessary in the execution of our joint mission, we do respectfully ask that you provide all available assistance to our forces in the event of emergency. We will, of course, provide assistance to your own forces as well.

I look forward to this mission of joint cooperation and mutual security between our great nations.

Rufus Shinra
President of the Shinra Republic

OPERATION NICKEL GRASS

Shepistan, in the spirit of international cooperation and brotherhood, has announced the beginning of a very large humanitarian airlift to the continent of Velestria. Shipping will be handled by SAC's KC-22 tanker fleet, which will be capable of delivering roughly 30 tons per flight to the starving and downtrodden of the continent.

Per previous agreements with Japanistan regarding sovereignity in the area, and due to the fact that all airfields in the area are too dangerous for safe flight operations, all humanitarian aid will be directed through Japanistan's Coast Guard base, where it will be handled by Japanistani humanitarian organizations,....

Results
The Airlift is expected to continue for at least 30 days. With 200 KC-22s taking part -- 294,000 short tons of aid will be shipped to the place.

Japanistan New Mega Tokyo New Agency Report

Toady Chrysanthemum Fuehrer Uesugi Kenshin spoke to the Diet and the Japanistani people, asking them to donate humanitarian relief and support a new expanded appropriations bill to cover the cost of aiding development and peace in al-Akharabat. A large airlift of humanitarian aid in the form of construction supplies and food into the new Velaria Coast Guard Field has already been arranged, with air drops slatted to begin in al-Akharabat the next day. Shepistani transport aircraft have joined the effort, reflecting the increasly international approach to peacekeeping and aid in al-Akharabat. New Mega Tokyo New Agency cannot confirm reports that a 4th expeditionary aid convoy is already being formed, significantly disrupting shipping schedules on several coastal routes.

Van Halstoff Base

"It is damn hot as hell here," Specialist Alexandra Hoya muttered to her fellow workmate as the two combat engineers, detached from the 4th Division where it was forward-deployed in Adabani, continued working on expanding the growing air base. They were tasked with expanding the airfield further, permitting not just more room for the aircraft but extra runways, or rather, with inspecting cleared land to begin laying the steel foundations and tarmac.
"I guess the brass figure that the Japs are here to stay if we're laying this," Specialist George Ruthers said while motioning for the steel-layers to move forward.
"You know what I say? I say let the Japs keep this damned place. They can enjoy the sun burns and heat stroke and whatever that long-fanged beast was that the Marines caught running the perimeter last night."
That prompted Ruthers to laugh.

They looked up briefly in time to see helo aircraft bearing the insignia of Tian Xia fly overheard. Behind them, on one of the prepared runways, a flight of Cascadian ASF-10Cs readied for takeoff to escort the units.

Later that night, the two Specialists, on off-time, were laying on their cots in their barracks - which was thankfully air-conditioned - when they heard sounds from outside that prompted them to look. A group of Cascadian paratroopers were loading onto a refueled and ready T-12B.

el-Kalim, southwest al-Akharabat

Satellite photography and a previous flyover had confirmed that the Japanstanis had not arrived yet at the sleepy fishing village. The local residents had already been appraised by representatives from the handful of functioning embassies in Jasser to the north to be expecting the sound in the night as the T-12B flew low overhead and disgorged their paratroopers onto the soil.
Most landed fine, save for Privates Jason Kinnery and Sam Layton. The two paras were taken by a slight gust of northerly wind that blew them out a little too far, landing softly in the surf of the beach. Getting drenched was the least of their problems, given their parachutes could drag them out further into the surf if they didn't get ouf ot them. Sam managed to get his off and was pulling the pack to shore (the sergeant would never let him hear the end of it if he abandoned his 'chute) when Jason called out for help. Sam tossed the pack toward shore and waded back in as the sea pulled at the unlucky para. The harness clatch was stuck rather well and, not being patient, Sam took his combat knife and cut the harness, pulling Jason free. The two men waded back to shore where Sam retrieved his pack. "Where's your pack?" he asked Jason.
"What do you mean?" he asked.
"You know what the Sergeant's gonna say, don't you?"
"The sea got the damn thing!", Jason growled. "I'm wet enough as it is, I'm not going...."
But after the extra look he got and the thought in his head, he went. By God, he went.

Office of the King, Sheoth, the Vineyards

Brandon looked at his aide in and sighed, “How bad is the CFR now?”

“Well, sire, the Minoy invasion fleet had crossed the lakes, and began landing when Coilerburg began launching air strikes on the Minoy fleet. The Indhopal and Coilerburg Invasion forces are holding their ground quite well, and what cohesive government was left will most likely fall soon.”

“Any word from Westchester about their border situation?”

“None, sire, I believe they are focusing all their energies on taking the PRSF, before turning their attention elsewhere.”

“A wise choice, if you ask me.”

“But, they might end up with no land to grab on the CFR side, though of course just putting people in the country doesn’t mean your occupation and naturalization are any easier.”

“If Westchester made its decision, then it made its decision. I do believe that we are now the ones hosting the FTO conference: are we able to?”

“Yes, sire, the SEC Convention Centre will work well in this capacity. There is always a bigger room.”

“Good, Good. The only other question I have is, ‘Has RISC relocated her headquarters?’”

“Well, no sire, RISC Head Roger Shrubber decided that the building will hold, and I am inclined to agree with him, that mining office was built to survive internal conflict, let alone what the are up against now.”

“Well then, I accept Roger’s decision. Idiot should know that it’ll get him killed.”

“No comment, sire.”

Eutopia and The Vineyards announce VEIL

In its first official capacity, the Kingdom of Vineyards, and the Federated Republic of Eutopia are merging their intelligence assets. Forming the Vinish-Eutopian Intelligence League, a group that hopes to allow for better management of assets, allowing both countries to operate less active agents, less active items, are the RIS (Royal Intelligence Service), OFI (Office of Federated Intelligence) and some minor independent intelligence agencies.

The VEIL is slated to be fully integrated in September of 2009.

Sea Skimmer wrote:Communication to Indhopal

Given Japanistan's desires to see peace in Akharabat, Indhopal wishes to offer its assistance in the peacekeeping effort. Through the FTO, Indhopal is very familiar with peacekeeping and nation building missions. Indhopal would like to send a force of observers to Akharabat and experts to aid in the formation of a civilian government. Elements of the 7th marine Regiment are also being surged to help with reconstruction.

Meanwhile, in Al-Akharabat

James Novik was the sole ISIA agent on the ground in Al-Akharabat. He was incredibly busy after years of routine work. The government was suddenly very interested in this place. That probably had something to do with the huge Japanistani base next door, their bombing of airfields and the Cannasian operation at the only functional airport in the country. Novik's current job was to find some places to land a small number of men. Indhopal was going to send some of its best from the SRG to keep an eye on things. Novik had already picked out a good field for them to do a HALO jump into. They were coming in on a single C-17 that was also carrying a pitiful amount of relief supplies. All of Indhopal's tankers had to set up in daisy chain just to get one plane over here, and Novik was thinking that there would be more than just one drop over the coming days.

Novik had told his bosses that Japanistan had bad plans for the region. The bosses had apparently been distracted by matters closer to home. Couldn't blame them for that really. But now Japanistan and Cannasia were here firstest with the mostest and Indhopal had to play catch up if they didn't want the two Imperialist powers to shape the destiny of the whole region. It was hoped that by putting some men on the ground they could tame any excesses by the other powers and try to get everyone to let the locals have some say in the future of their country. Novik was having the most fun he had had in years. He was going to enjoy helping to giving a big “fuck you” to the Imperialists. Once the SRG men arrived here he would take them to meet all the local militia leaders he had made contact with over the years.

CRS Defiant

Just as the paras took off for el-Kalim the Marine 2nd Brigade had finished removing all but one battalion of its own force, leaving the ground defense of the Air Base to a battalion of the Airborne Brigade, the Shinra Republic's airborne contingent, and a growing force from the 4th Division being shipped in by air.

With everything ready the Defiant COG made headed west, looking to loop around the Japanistani positions - that is, to stay far enough away to not be any threat - and to deliver the 2nd Marine Brigade to el-Kalim to reinforce their position.

Adams Capital District

It was morning further east in Cascadia, where President Garrett was sitting down to a working breakfast with Admiral Fielder, serving as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. It had been meant to be a three man breakfast but a Pacific storm the prior night had caused the SecDef's flight from Victoria to be delayed until late, so he had waved off.
Enjoying a cheese and ham omelette, the President mostly asked Admiral Fielder on updates on the western Velestrian situation, which the Admiral answered fully. An extra company from the 4th Infantry Brigade, 7th Division, was being sent to reinforce Van Halstoff. Combat engineer advisors were setting up another coastal airfield at um-Kasrah in western al-Itani with the full blessing of that government - well, what passed for one - to serve as a backup airfield.

As the briefing went on there was the inevitable question regarding Air Force increases - in six months time an outstanding order of ASF-10Ns would be delivered to the Navy and a full squadron of ASF-10Cs delivered to the Air Force - and Congress' resistance to purchasing too much from foreign nations (the President had considered offering to buy surplus F-15s from Shroomania in the following year, for one) as opposed to the powerful aerospace industry that Cascadia enjoyed. The Navy still sometimes angled for the proposed Audacious-class carrier, a 60,000-ton displacement-range carrier that some designs called to use nuclear power, and Fielder imposed upon the President how valuable a larger carrier would be in the western Velestria situation, with the escorts to go with her of course. Garrett widely let the comment pass too much without comments on raising taxes to cover such a vast increase in military spending.

Internally he was wracked by some doubt, even after the breakfast ended, on where he'd gone in this situation. He had, fresh on the job (in both ways; the Stephen in this world had been elected in March, Cascadia seemed to prefer early spring elections...), committed Cascadia to a dangerous foreign situation that she likely did not have the resources to maintain alone or against strong opposition. So far Japanistan had limited itself to occasional near-overflights of Van Halstoff.... but what would they do now that Cascadia was clearly aiding in restricting Japanistani expansion?

In a way, he feared, they were going to need those full-deck carriers thanks to him.

After returning to his office he checked correspondence with various nations on the situation, including the recent surprising but welcome Coilerburg deployment of two submarines to assist in Van Halstoff's defense, he was treated to a knock at the door. Sopha al-Razma Garrett entered, hair grown out to the nape of her neck after spending much of her 20s with it cut to Navy shortness. A former lawyer who served in the Cascadian Navy in that occupation, they had met when she was a young JAG lawyer and he a Congressional aide at the start of the first part of his political career.

At least, that's how indig-Stephen's memories went. The other one mused at the similarities in background, given the actress he'd always imagined as Sophia Razmara in his mind in that prior life. To actually be married to her, well, that was still taking getting used to.

"Hello dear, up for some lunch?" he asked, genuinely considering the meal given the monotony of paperwork.
"I was going to ask you about that. You've been busy so lately that Deirdre - their 9 year old daughter, he remembered - has been looking forward to spending some time with you."
"But not Jim?"
At that she laughed. Their middle child was sixteen, a dreadful age to be when his siblings were a nine year old sister and a twenty year old brother. "He's busy trying to make the basketball team. But you know how he gets."
He didn't want me to be President the voice in Stephen's head went. "Yeah, he still hasn't gotten over it." Standing up, something occured to Stephen and he asked, "Oh, I was going to say... Robert's daughter Susan's going to be in town, she just got a posting to the Olympia and she wants to celebrate with him before she has to go. I was going to invite Robert and Julia to bring her to dinner to commeorate, are you up to that?"
Sophia smiled pleasantly. "I'd love to."
"That's great." He took her arm and led her out.

Other Information

Eight F-35Cs from the Joint Strike Fighter Project with Shinra and other nations - to be designated MSF-15Ns under Cascadian classification - are undergoing final testing runs and are about to be assigned to their pilots, to be attached to NF-7 of the Republic air wing.

Another order of 40 ASF-10Cs has been made to Boeing's Douglass Defense Industries subsidary, as well as 20 ASF-10C/Ns. Orders of Boeing's GSF-14 design - having been delayed by reduced Air Force spending under previous administrations - are expected to be made soon.

The Cascadian Department of the Air Force has accepted offers from their counterparts in the Republic of Alaska for joint development of improved UAV craft, including UCAV-capable designs. The Alaskan contribution to the project is expected to offset some of the design costs, which the Air Force has balked at due to the until-recent paucity of funds.
