Amtrak Train runs out of gas

Post by Solauren »

Perhaps they couldn't afford to gas it up?
Amtrak train runs out of fuel, 80 passengers stranded for 2 hours

By The Associated Press

SAN DIEGO - It was the little engine that couldn't - because it was thirsty for fuel.

Officials say a planned quick train trip down the U.S. west coast turned into a long haul for more than 80 Amtrak passengers Sunday night when their Los Angeles to San Diego train ran out of fuel.

Amtrak spokesman Cliff Cole said the train sat for about two hours on the northern edge of San Diego before another engine came along to push it the last several kilometres into the train station.

The train, which had left Los Angeles at 8:30 p.m., didn't get to San Diego until 1:15 a.m. Monday, two hours late.

Cole described having a train run out of fuel as "an unusual occurrence" and said Amtrak officials will be looking into how it happened.

Probably just missed a scheduled servicing stop with the locomotive because of a mix-up or delay, and then thought they still had enough fuel to complete the trip, which from the sound of it they almost did. Not exactly an earth shattering our infrastructure is disintegrating kind of event.

Around the country today there's probably been thousands of vehicles which have run out of fuel--why does this even warrant a story?

Clearly, because it must prove that mass transit is evil, broken, and communist. It must be destroyed and replaced with even bigger, even more inefficient SUVs.

More and bigger SUVs? Preposterous. The SUV is a piker compared to this elite titan of American excess consumption: the International CXT. Every family in America should have two; a shiny new one for Pop, with the older model left as a hand-me-down for Junior.

That's something I'd love to own.
If the purchase price was $6000 and diesel was $0.50/gal.
Nowadays I'd prefer a nice Suzuki Burgman maxi-scooter.

Because diesel locomotives can generally carry more fuel than they actually need for even a cross-country trip, the reason being the fuel tank also serves as ballast (more weight = better traction), and when they do refuel, they often still have something like half a tank of fuel left. So yeah, a diesel locomotive running out of fuel is in fact rather unusual.

Honestly, this is just getting fucking annoying at this point. A train running out of gas has precious little to do with the GOP. Was it a cock-up by Amtrak? Sure. Were the evil Republicans latched on to the train with their razor-sharp talons and stealing the fuel away while shrieking madly? I doubt it.

But not unheard of or unprecedented. It's rare, but I recall a couple occasions around here where a train rain out of fuel.
