What would happen if a 1TT bomb went of in the earth's core?

Post by His Divine Shadow »

Well, as the topic says, what would happen if a 1TT bomb went off at the very centre of the Earth?

Not too much, I'd imagine. 4.2E21 J (ie- 1 teraton) divided into the mass of the core and mantle is 0.0007 J/kg of kinetic energy (assuming perfect conversion), and perhaps a millionth of a degree in terms of heat.

EDIT: fixed careless units.

Maybe some slight displacement of magma that may make eruptions ongoing now more violent or cause some other eruptions to start up again, but I doubt it will really be noticeable unless looking.

Ah, ok, what about somewhere under the crust?

How far? If it was right upto the crust then the explosion may produce major earthquakes in that region, possibly create volcanic activity and liquify more of the crust than usual. Hard to say.

Go and experiment, best way to figure it out...

You are all wrong isn't this meant to be a SFG site.

The planet instantly explodes into a huge fireball but the heroes ship just manages to escape the blast radius.

No one really cares that much about the several hundred million dead.

Him and millions of other yokels who won't understand why the handful of scientifically knowledgeable people in the theatre are vomiting and running for the exits.

I doubt even that.

They'll either throw out a 'huge' number like "millions of billions of joules" and then have the obglibatory moron ask what a Joule is so they can give a dumbed-down analogy to matches or buckets of water that isn't even right, or they'll just yet again compare it to the detonation over Hiroshima (as if these morons even know what year or war that was for).
