Exotic radiation

Post by The Janitor »

Just seen Nemesis what is it with ST and its obsession with different kinds of magical or exotic radiation?

What is positronic radiation or that lethal terrilitic radiation or mesiomic or all of the other silly types i have heard of over the years?

Are they different EM waves, unusual particles, utter BS?

Don't positrons emit gamma rays? I think that could be considered radiation...but I'm not sure.

I assume positronic radiation is just free positrons emitted from a radioactive source; it would have a close cousin in beta radiation (high-speed electrons). Positrons are emitted in some atomic decay processes, and you can get sources commercially. Nobody bothers to call it positronic radiation, though, because that would be daft.

As for the others, they all sound like nonsense (unsurprisingly).

:D

Thanks.
Okay can anyone explain why if you detected these free positrons from a planet light years away that would indicate there is a Android on that planet.

If positrinic radiation is made of anti-matter(positrons) you can't the stuff wouldn't make it off planet! I would cease to exsist after contact with the first air molecule.[/code]

It would cease to exist after contact with the first air molecule, sorry about that Typo.

This is most appropriate in Pure Star Trek. Thread moved.

Yes. It can happen when a script is written by a pair of (poor) comedians with a dictionary.

Ah, sorry, I forgot to put the quotes around "radiation".

If a free positron, by chance, actually managed to escape the atmosphere, remember that it has to traverse the distance to the E-E and be distinct from natural positron emitters to be detected. Because positrons have mass, they can't exceed the speed of light, further limiting the probability of detection due to the distances involved. In other words, the writers were pulling this "radiation" out of their collective asses. What's new?

I think the stupid writers use radiation as a plot device. For example:

Writer 1: Ok, we need to have a way that an assassin could take out a large group of people in an enclosed space. How about a conventional bomb

Writer 2: No, the viewers are idiots who like catchy technobabble phrases. A conventional bomb won't work. Let's come up with 'triallyc subspatial interphasic radiation'.

Writer 1: Works for me. Let's go collect our paychecks.

See, anyone can write for ST
Chris: "Way to go dad, fight the machine"
Stewie: "How do you know about the machine?"
