"I'm like Jack Bauer" - McCain

Post by Ender »

NYT article
In an interview recently with Marie Claire magazine, Senator John McCain said he most identified with Kiefer Sutherland, who portrays Jack Bauer on “24,” as opposed to Jack Nicholson or Bob Dylan.

“We have a lot in common because he escapes all the time,” Mr. McCain said. But when confronted with the notion that Agent Bauer, on the Fox TV show — still in hiatus until its next season — tortures people, Mr. McCain, a former P.O.W. in Vietnam, responded: “Yeah, that’s right. That’s where Jack and I disagree. He believes in torture, but I don’t. He says, ‘Tell me where the weapons are.’ The person says, ‘I won’t.’ Bam! ‘O.K., I’ll tell.’ ”

Asked about his other TV favorites, he called “Borat,” “very, very coarse. I also like ‘The Office’ and ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm.’ Larry David’s the neighbor that you find to be a real pain in the rear end.”

And about that infamous temperament, “Are you going to go nuclear on us if you’re the president?” Mr. McCain replied no, that he would become angered by corruption in Washington, or out-of-control spending.

On the domestic front, he said he usually deferred to his wife, Cindy McCain, on purchases because she had such good taste. He said: “She makes most of our purchases because I think she has very good taste, and it’s been made abundantly clear over time that I do not. But there are certain areas where I must make my opinion felt … including the remote. …

“There was one big decision that we made together. Cindy had grown up in the house that we lived in. And our kids, except for one, were no longer living there. So we had a long conversation and decided we would move into a condominium. That was one of the most painful days of her life.
Now we’re happy. We just don’t drive by our old house.”
It would be remiss of us not to mention that the McCains’ real estate holdings — at least seven houses or condos — have come under much derision from the Democrats since Mr. McCain was unable to remember how many they owned.

The interview took place before the senator’s surprise announcement that he had chosen Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate. Asked in the interview about what he needed to do to counter the single women’s vote going toward Senator Barack Obama, the Republican would-be nominee at the time said:

“I hope this does not sound in any way inappropriate — the importance of the women’s vote. They are the majority of the population, and many of them are still undecided. So I have to work hard.”

Last month, the magazine interviewed Senator Obama.
The Interview
En route to Orlando on his private campaign plane, the Straight Talk Express, John McCain, wearing a rumpled suit, looks braced for his task: Facing a superstar opponent more than 20 years his junior, the one-time maverick is trying to convince America that he is the fresher, better choice for president. Laying aside a book on General David Petraeus, he talks with Marie Claire about his opponent, women voters, and his inner Kiefer Sutherland.

MC: If Barack Obama has indeed challenged you to a duel, as you've put it, what is your weapon of choice?
JM: Lightsabers. [slices an imaginary lightsaber through the air]

MC: They say you've been in three plane crashes . . .
JM: Once I ejected from my airplane. Once I had a flameout. And once I was shot down. Cindy gets nervous when we fly. I tell her, "Don't worry. I'm going to die, but not in a plane."

MC: You know Obama fairly well. Do you "like" him?
JM: I admire him, and I like him. I think he has a great deal of talent. He should be applauded for his eloquence and for his ability to motivate millions.

MC: Among single women, Obama is leading in the polls. What are we missing about you?
JM: With all due respect, we're basically tied in the polls. And I'm proud of where we are in our campaign. But let me also say I'm the underdog. I understand - and I hope this does not sound in any way inappropriate - the importance of the women's vote. They are the majority of the population, and many of them are still undecided. So I have to work hard.

MC: You liken Obama to Britney in your famous ad, while portraying yourself as the more serious candidate. Which celebrity would you like to be compared to? Bob Dylan? Jack Nicholson?
JM: Kiefer Sutherland. [laughs, imitates a voice from the show 24] "It's Jack Bauer." We have a lot in common because he escapes all the time.

MC: Um, he's also a torturer.
JM: Yeah, that's right. That's where Jack and I disagree. He believes in torture, but I don't. He says, "Tell me where the weapons are." The person says, "I won't." Bam! "OK, I'll tell."

MC: I hear you like Borat.
JM: He's very, very coarse. I also like The Office and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Larry David's the neighbor that you find to be a real pain in the rear end.

MC: People say you have a temper. Are you going to go nuclear on us if you're the president?
JM: [smiles] No. I get angry when I see corruption in Washington. I get angry when I see us voting ourselves pay raises and taking recesses, without addressing the challenges that face America. And you know what? I think Americans are angry too.

MC: How does it work when you and Cindy make household purchases?
JM: She makes most of our purchases because I think she has very good taste, and it's been made abundantly clear over time that I do not. But there are certain areas where I must make my opinion felt . . . including the remote.

MC: That's an important decision.
JM: There was one big decision that we made together. Cindy had grown up in the house that we lived in. And our kids, except for one, were no longer living there. So we had a long conversation and decided we would move into a condominium. That was one of the most painful days of her life. Now we're happy. We just don't drive by our old house.

MC: When you ran for office in previous years, you went to the movies on election day. What will you see this year - The Dark Knight? Pineapple Express?
JM: Well, I haven't seen Batman yet. But I did see Indiana Jones, and I was very pleased because the old guy won.

... this fucking country.

You know, back in the days before McCain had presidential ambitions, I'd see him on an interview or documentary (Why We Fight) and I'd think, "wow, he's a Republican, but I really like that guy."

What fuck made him shill out so much.

Yeah, the Gimp is just like Jack Bauer —at age 90, perhaps.

Pay no attention to that Military Commissions Act vote behind the curtain.
Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things... their number is negligible and they are stupid. --Dwight D. Eisenhower

I don't think this rates a separate thread, but a stupid statement from his daughter.

n an interview on the Today Show this morning, host Meredith Vieira asked Meghan McCain about Sen. Barack Obama’s (D-IL) comments that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) “doesn’t get it.” Meghan responded by pointing to her dad’s service in Vietnam and her two brothers who are currently enlisted. She then went a step further, however, saying that her family is the only family that understands war:

Well.

I think my grandparents would like to kick this bitch in the teeth. What with all four of them being directly in a war.

What a condescending little bitch. That's terribly demeaning to everyone in the armed forces. And frankly, having family in the military doesn't mean having family in combat zones. And even if there are McCains seeing combat, that should be incentive to get the fuck out of that mess.

Realizing that he wouldn't get elected without trying to "Bush" himself up. Though why he folded when tWit's campaign was disparaging his war record in 2000 baffles even me.
