To recreate the CPI scene, they'd need two people to dress as dorks (okay, to dress dorkier) and stand next to an open area of the LHC with no handrails. Their union might have something to say about that.

The crazies seem to think a black hole will sink to the center of the Earth and swallow the Earth in 2012

They're off by a few years. Any black hole the LHC would produce would be microscopic and either vanish before long, or sink to the centre of the Earth and stay there for a very long time before it ever threatened us.

Of course, the chances of such an event even happening aren't making me lose sleep here.

Has anyone checked out Google today? It seems that they decided today was special enough to do a tongue-in-cheek special edition of their front page.

You got to tie Nostradamus is with the Mayan End of the world with biblical prophecy.......

They are supposedly using his 9:44 passage on the LHC....just kind of curious what was actually written

I am so uber geeked by the LHC. I'm hoping they find some really interesting shit in their research.

I hope they find evidence FTL is possible. I really do, even if the experiment isn't designed for that.

And for an encore, they can get a 100% perfect heat engine too.

Sorry, but nothing is going to say FTL is possible without breaking the universe. It's working fine right now.

Couldn't resist....here's the link to Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun with lyrics:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBszC40uvdQ

These are European scientists, remember. Expect any results to take a very very very long time. They just don't seem to work on the same time scale as American or Japanese scientists.

The good news is that we have a powerful ally at CERN should the earth be invaded

The bad news is we should prepare for unforeseen consequences

Good find Ender.

I hope to see some good results from the LHC. The thing is awesome.

Those aren't shopped, are they? Either way, I've got a crowbar, I'm ready.

Apparently they shopped glasses off the guy in the second pic. Other then that those are real.

You would be more accurate if you stated that our current knowledge and understanding of physics and the universe decrees FTL an impossible concept.

It's one thing to make positive statements regarding established theories making specific predictions...quite another to assert the universe somehow bends to our understanding of it.

The universe has historically proven that is more than capable of breaking our theories; no theory has ever 'broken' the universe, and never will since they are merely the best reflection of it possible at the time.

I thought this might be enjoyed a Layman's explanation of the LHC Linka

So, we're through Day One of the LHC experiment.

What a nightmare it has been! The Living envy the Dead! Food turns to sand in our mouths, and water to poison!

In all seriousness, I hope they find something cool.

In a day and age where a fundamentalist makes a good chance to become the next VP of the US, I can only say Go europe!.

Good to see when money is being spent on something usefull.

Nothing has ever happened before the initiator of the event happened. Nothing has ever had more energy come out of it than went in total. There are things we know to be true and give the status of law. Unless you can show how thermodynamics and relativity/causality can be got around, then it's simply impossible, no matter what new physics we find. Learning more about a square peg won't allow you to fit it in a circular hole, so to speak.

Oh, and awesome find, Ender.

My point is that while the US seems sinking away, I'm glad that europe is taking the lead in progress again

PS. on another board about evolution, someone was making fun of fundies

I found another layman's 'hood' explanation at Troll Kingdom:

Title: Large Hadron Rap

Really, do any of the doomsayers have any technical training? How the hell can banging protons into each other create a gravity well? Come on.

How many LHC's could you build with 1 year of Iraq budget?

Well, the Sun's full of protons banging into each other, and the sun's got a huge gravity well...

See the connection?
