IN the Death Star novel, one of the main characters was hired to run a bar/night club on the DS. I believe there was mention of other such establishments all over the station.

I think that was sort of the point of the device.
"Hard as hell to hit," as in "Damn near impossible, except at extremely close range." This is why (military, at least) marksman practice againt person-size targets and not whiskey bottles. I'm trying to think how far away I could hit an erratically moving six-inch sphere, and it's not very far. That would pretty well limit the device's usefulness to practicing extremely close range reflexive marksmanship. I suppose you could make an argument that this is the sort of thing Han needs to practice, since he gets into situations like that from time to time (Greedo), and that's the only thing he can practice, since the Millennium Falcon's smaller than my apartment.

It makes a lot more sense if the thing projects a holographic image of a guy and that's what you're supposed to shoot at. That'd make it a lot more practical, since you could program it to simulate a wide array of threats.

I can't source this, but I seem to recall reading somewhere that the Death Star housed a substantial civilian population. Anyone else see this, or is it bullshit?

like this? (from the novel at page 133 (hard cover)
"Memah Roothes is a civilian contractor whose designation is RSW-Six, subgrade, Miscellaneous Entertainment and Services."
"Which means what?"
"She was hired to run a cantina in this sector"
this discussion is between the sector cheif surgeon (a member (if reluctant) of the imperial military) and his droid aid.
I may be an idiot, but I'm a tolerated idiot
"I think you completely missed the point of sigs. They're supposed to be completely homegrown in the fertile hydroponics lab of your mind, dried in your closet, rolled, and smoked...
Oh wait, that's marijuana..."Einhander Sn0m4n
