Stalker: Clear Sky impressions
First, I want to say it amuses me a great deal to see the version number start at v1.50.00. They continue with the claim that this is 'X-ray v1.5' and not 'still less than v1 was supposed to be'.
That aside, CS is a serious improvement over Stalker in almost every way. There's more space, the PDA is improved, the inventory is improved, there's more to do, it looks better, and a lot of good ideas have been stolen from mods (like actual dark nights).
However, it's still not a 'finsihed' game. You can't move stacks properly (a pile of bullets for instance, isn't 150 bullets; it's several separate 'boxes' of bullets, each in a semi-random value from 2 to about fifteen) so dumping and picking up ammo is a pain in the ass. The combat AI is improved (holy shit raining grenades), but they are still prone to stand around in the open and get shot. The guns are now LESS accurate than before; the Abakan and the M4 are far worse than a PMM in this respect. There are many bugs with the warfare and quests - for intance, I entered the garbage and cleared a checkpoint. Once my backup arrived, it tripped ALL the warfare goals and I instantly 'defeated' the enemy, even though I had no idea where their base even WAS.
This leads to another problem - the faction warfare is cool stuff indeed, but it's a 'control point' thing... and they don't tell you where/what these points are. You'll get a message ZOMG DEFEND TEH MACHINE YARD, but nowhere on your map does it say 'machine yard'. If it didn't drop a point saying 'go here', there'd be no way at all to know, and thus when people talk about locations, you have only tha vaguest idea what they mean. This is strange, as the PDA now has much more information displayed (and finally indicates the difference between explored/not explored stashes).
I haven't proceeded far in the game yet, but as you're a 'merc' and you're moving through the zone, it appears that you work for different factions in turn, and each has a 'conflcit' which has certain 'goals' you need to fulfil for your side to 'win'. I'm hoping later there is a full-map free-for-all war, because that's what I was looking forward to.
The new zones look very nice, whereas the older ones being revisted have had only slight changes. The addition of much stronger mutants and head-high grass make the game much more interesting, and you'll stick with 'Fort-15 and shotgun' much longer than in Stalker, so there is a satisfying style of combat and tension. However, you quickly get decent guns and it becomes less troublesome, which is a shame.

Don't make me re-chamber for 9x19, buddy. Then the ultimate pistol will fire a round you'd rather use in a different gun!
If the weapon customisation screen showed you want canceled what (or even said 'one barrel mod, one grip mod, etc) it'd be a lot clearer. I still haven't found many mods either.
There are sometimes when you heal crippled allies where they ask you for a gun, and you can offer one of yours. Thing is, if you offer them 'shotgun' and you've got your super modded shotgun of win and your lameo backup shotgun, they take the good one! Bastards.

Nah, those have been replaced with weapon upgrading, somtimes your enemies will have upgraded weapons as well.JointStrikeFighter wrote:Have you found any silly experimental guns? Like the ole FAST FIRE AK from stalker?
Kinda, yes, but since it's a prequel I'm guessing you don't actually get to kill him (though I have seen him). What silly stuff is happening storywise? Do you have to KILL STRELOK!
You play a mercanry (note: not a Merc, but a mercenary) who gets caught in a big emmision and somehow survives. You're rescued by a group of scientists (the titular Clear Sky faction) who point out that your body somehow responds to the emmisions to make it better for a little while, but if they continue will ultimately kill you. They theorise that the increase in emmision size and frequency is an attempt by The Zone to stop a group of people from getting to it's centre, like an immune system reaction. Clear Sky task you with stopping the group of people trying to get to the centre of The Zone, for your sake and for everyone in The Zone.
A quick note on that. I think there's some subtle RPG elements there, as later on in the game when I was using my hunting rifle (excellent mutant killer) it seemed a lot more accurate than earlier in the game. Now I upgraded it as soon as I got it, so it can't be that, so either I'm imaginging it's more accurate or the game has some hidden experience gaining thing that makes you more accurate as you go on.Stark wrote: The guns are now LESS accurate than before; the Abakan and the M4 are far worse than a PMM in this respect.
Overall though I do have to agree with Stark. It's a damn good game but it is full of bugs. I've had to restart twice due to bugs (3 if you include the restart for patching as different versions are not compatible) and I'm contniually having to change my graphics settings to avoid crashes. Later on I'm going to load back up and see if my particular problem right now is just the (going by the official forums) common problems of one of the main characters falling through the floor and you just have to go to the room below where he's meant to be and speak to his hat laying on the floor.
It's lots of fun to play ....... when it lets you play it.
EDIT: In fact the delayed release for the US is probably a blessing in disguise as hopefully they'll have another patch ready as well.
If you are planing on playing it then save and save regularly. And not just auto and quick saves (there's only 1 spot each for them) but actually save the game using the save menu, 'cos you donlt want to have to be restarting the game (or losing hours of gameplay) because you don't have a save from just before you entered the area you are in.

So I guess your 'impression' of the game is absolutely nothing, then? Wow, thanks!
2000AD, I've sorta noticed something like this too - my over-under shotgun is WAY more accurate than my M4 or whatever, but I've been using it as my major weapon for most of the game. My Fort-12 would be a great long-range weapon if the bullet didn't magically disappear at a certain range - the only explanation for watching the bullet's divergence and then have nothign happen when it hits someone.
I haven't actually noticed many technical bugs with settings etc, but I'm pretty sure I've had NPCs be removed from teh game area somehow. I really dig the tricorders, but just like with Stalker I wish you stayed at a low level for longer. The very simple tricorder is awesome, and the next one you get is basically a fully-automatic tricorder of zero skill, which is a shame.

The basic impression I get from Clear Sky is that it's a step up from Shadows, but still doesn't come near the things that were looking to happen back in the days of Oblivion Lost. Still, a a step up from Shadows is good enough since Shadows wasn't necessarily terrible.
Stark, it's cool that the combat AI has recieved an upgrade and the guns have been a bit rebalanced. I imagine now that the AI uses grenades it's a lot harder to camp out in a shack or behind some tree and headshot your way to victory. Their's still game breakingly accurate uber guns present though. Really, a simple way they could have fixed that was simply NOT make headshots one hit kills on guys wearing really thick armor. Or make aiming actually challenging (like Brothers in Arms) and not just Call of Duty style point and click.

Against guys like bandits or those idiots at the Cordon wearing berets sure. I'm talking about the guys wearing power armor and helmets. I mean, we're already playing a game with health bar damage models. The glaring weakspot on the head is ALWAYS a stupid easy shot in games due to zero challenge aiming and arbitrary damage points.
Best care anywhere.
Oh god.Commander 598 wrote:If I couldn't kill someone wearing roughly conventional equipment with a headshot using conventional firearms, I would rage.
Are we going to pretend Stalker didn't become a boring headshotfest the moment you got a decent gun? Are we going to pretend even the power-armour guys didn't die to one easy headshot due to the combination of accurate ARs and terrible 'stand out in the open' AI? Are we going to pretend you wouldn't stumble across a dozen or so enemies, and kill them all with a G36 before they even got in range to hit you?
Nobody cares about the retarded VSS and shit; you didn't need them. Even in Oblivion Lost I saved for a bit, bought an F2000, and headshot everyone from start to finish. Oh yay, the excitement!
Hawkeye, the grenades work quite well to prevent CQB AI sploiting - they tend to just peg large numbers of grenades over walls etc, so it's far harder to just camp someone and easily kill them all. Their long-range performance is still bad, and in an amusing twist, pulling enemies to a friendly base doesn't make the friendlies help - they actually stand there, occasionaly waving at you, while the bad guys blow them away. It's a shame they still have really simple aiming (not even any fore-after misalignment or aim drift at all, just ZOMG CONEFIRE) and their single-piece armour.
Oh and the gasmasks everyone have are STILL USELESS. Jesus, is it really that hard? The new jumbo rad bar/geiger counter is also totally useless, since I accidentally stood around in a danger area, half filled the rad bar, and just waited for it to go away and I wasn't really that badly off. Radiation being super-lame was always stupid, but you don't even have to use your mask underground to keep out the dust etc.

Well that ending is a bit of a let down. A piss easy few sniper shots and then a boring video. Compared to SoC endings it's rubbish, no multiple possible endings, no impact of your preious choices and leaves a lot of questions unanswered. The only question it does answer is why no-ones heard of Clear Sky in SoC.

Sounds like the A.I. is vastly improved then.Stark wrote:
