AIR DEFENSE MAY RECEIVE PRIORITY FOR '09 MILITARY EXPENDITURES
MESS-Shepistan war revives concerns over defense against bombers
ASHFORD CITY - With the current MESS-Shepistan conflict, concerns have been raised over the Duchy of Langley's susceptibility to bomber attacks similar to those being used by Shepistan against the Old Dominion.
At present, the Langley Air Force's interceptor force consists of just 16 F-4E Phantom IIs and 48 F-16C Block 52+ Fighting Falcons; the Army operates at least one MIM-104 Patriot battery and several batteries of the obsolescent MIM-23 Hawk, while the Navy operates a total of six Sachsen class frigates equipped with AESA radars as its main anti-air component. The F-4s are due to be replaced by Shroomanian-made F-16XLs by the middle of this year, while the Army is awaiting delivery of twelve batteries of S-300 long-range SAMs from the Crimson Star Republic to replace the Hawks; six Álvaro de Bazán class frigates, which utilize the Aegis combat system, were also ordered from Byzantium last year and are due to be completed and in commission by early next year.
Even with these enhancements, various elements of the Langley Armed Forces feel that there is still some room for improvement. The Air Force is entertaining the option of acquiring more F-16XLs from Shroomania and is even considering purchasing MiG-31s from the CSR and USSR to form a dedicated interceptor force. The Army has expressed interest in obtaining more S-300s and is also considering acquiring the ultra-long-range S-400 missile.

Emergency Air Defence Bill passes parliament
Following the crushing report by the Defence Ministry concerning the state of readiness of PeZookia's air defence, and in light of the Shepistan-Old Dominion conflict over the Fuckland Islands, the Parliament has unilaterally voted to release Emergency Investment Bonds to the tune of 9 billion dollars in total, to be spent on upgrades and procurement of systems for the air defence network.
Bringing the total public debt to a staggering 22.43% GDP, and total military spending to 3.84%, the EADB represents a stunning retreat from careful fiscal responsbility of more stable times. It seems apparent that Shepistani agressiveness is making a lot of people nervous on the Old Continent.
The planned breakup of the spending under EADB is as follows:
1) 3 billion for acquisition of 20 S-300 launch batteries and their missiles

Among the agendas for the new Runaway Defense Budget will be the procurement of further defensive systems for Shroomanian airspace - from more advanced fighters such as the F-22 Raptor, to the purchase of joint Byzantium-Shroomanian S-400 surface to air missile system variants.
However, more funding will be dedicated to air defense infrastructure - such as improved radars and command control communications networks to not only upgrade Shroomanian air defense capabilities, but also to integrate them into the Continental Defense Plan. New stratellites and AEW&C BAM380s (8 A380s) are also being ordered.

ADAMS, CAPITAL DISTRICT - The House today approved a new defense budget plan that would bring Cascadian military spending to its highest level since the Second War, reaching $75 billion in 2012. Rep. Alex Willers of Bremerton, a Whig who supported the hike in defense spending, pointed to the declining global climate and the need for Cascadia to be prepared to deal with conflicts, particularly aerial assault by Shepistani bomber forces in the event that the current war with the MESS proves inconclusive. The budget increases currently favor the acquisition of the new SF-10D strike fighters and AIE-12C interceptors for the Cascadian Air Force and the overhauling of Cascadia's national Air Defense Network with new missile batteries and defensive radar installations, projects expecting to run in excess of $10 billion.

With cost runs expected to go into the billions, the Administration has reflected that either tax hikes or budget cuts are likely. Sources in the Capitol Section indicate concern that the space programs could ultimately effect the Congress' desired defense increases or result in cuts to other portions of the Republic budgets.

Details are still sketchy at the moment, but the agreement calls for abolishment of all tariffs on goods and services moving across the border, ellimination of customs checkpoints at the borders (replacing them instead with Border Guard patrols equipped with prerogatives to stop and control all foreign vehicles in a zone 20 kilometers from the border), and the ellimination of password for all passengers moving between PeZookia and Canissia.

"The outbreak of these 'Runaway Defense Budgets' will put a strain on the economies of our nations, and each of us will expend undue resources on research and development - R&D on the very same things our neighbors are doing at the same time. And that seems pretty wasteful to me.

The Wilkonian Air Service was already expecting by the end of the month to begin taking delivery on this year's run of F-22 fighter craft however an emergency appropriation following the outbreak of hostilities has allowed Columbia Aerospace to finish outfitting work on the 24 planes that were already entering the final outfitting stages before deliveries began early next week. Ministry of Defense officials indicated that the first six deliveries will begin imediately and will be used to finish outfitting the existing squadrons to full 16 plane strength. The remainder will be delivered this month however fielding as a squadron is awaiting the re-training of the 603rd Interceptor Squadron at which point the squadron's equipment will be handed over to the newly formed 606th Interceptor Squadron which has been working mostly simulator time. Defense experts expect that the 603rd will be declared operaitonally ready by early next month while the 606th will likely have towait until early next year. With the conflict ramping up between the MESS and Shepistan however all bets are off according to at least one ministry official speaking on the condition of anonymity.

The Presidents office was darker then usual. The drapes were down and the lights were off, except a small lamp in the corner which gave limited illumination to the room. President Shady was sitting at his desk and smoking a cigarette when his assistant Sofia entered the room and placed a folder on the desk.
"Comrade President, the operation begins in two hours."
"Excellent, is everything else ready?"
"Yes Comrade President, your Generals inform me that the fleet is in position and so is the army. We now wait for the Brotherhood to send the signal."

The flight of four F-111’s cruised at 30,000 feet and just under Mach 1, high above the calm waters of the Orizaco Bay.
“Tango Lead to Tango Uniform” queried the flight leader, “what is your situation? Over.”
“This is Tango Uniform, proceeding with final checklist now.”
A casual observer would see little difference between the four aircraft. Still, the Aardvark dubbed Tango Uniform was very different from the others. It was the first, and only, prototype F-111XL in existence. It had come to the unobserved silence of the bay to conduct its first test flight. The other three aircraft carried monitoring equipment.
“Tango Uniform to Tango Lead, I read all systems green and ready to go.”
“Stand by, Tango Uniform.”
The flight leader pushed the button that activated his data link and sent a burst transmission burning down to the Pride and Profit, telling the SDN flagship the flight was ready and waiting. If anything went cataclysmically wrong today, the LHD would provide S&R. Provided there was anything left to salvage of course.
A reply appeared in text on the flight leader’s HUD. “Tango Lead, you are cleared to proceed. Ladybird is observing. ENDIT.” Ladybird was the call sign of the Hawkeye 2000 that monitored the test at range.
“Tango Uniform, you are cleared to go. Alright Sadler, show us what she’s got.”
Eager to try out what the modified aircraft could do, Flight Lt. Eddy Sadler gunned his engines. Two F119-PW-100 variant engines, licensed from Shroomania and produced in San Dorado, had replaced the old TF30-P-111 turbofans, and it immediately became apparent that they made all the difference in the world. The F-111 rapidly accelerated up and away from the other three Aardvarks, shattering the sound barrier without even really trying, before finally settling at a cruise speed of Mach 1.8.
Sadler whistled in his oxygen mask. Granted, the wings were slung all the way back and the bomb bays were empty, but that was impressive. “Now, give me all you got, baby”, he grinned, and opened the throttle wide. With a roar the engines lit off, pressing Sadler back in his seat as the F-111XL accelerated to Mach 2.2, then Mach 2.6. Then a series of red lights came on, warning him that temperatures inside the fuel lines were running dangerously hot. Although the engines didn’t seem to be out of juice yet, Sadler eased up on the throttle, slowing the aircraft back down to a comfortable Mach 1.1. He smiled. He was now the fastest man in San Doradan history.
“Tango Uniform to Tango Flight, c’mon boys, get your arses over here. Time for beer and medals back at the AFB. And I’m buying.”

General Romanov's forces had managed to, with the assistance of USSR Marines and fleet support, surround the Karic Loyalists in the city and now the siege was on. Artillery was shelling both sides and casualties were increasing. The older T-72 Tanks of the Sjenska Army under command of General Romanov were not powerful enough to penetrate Karic's defence lines. They were forced to wait for the USSR armour and artillery support before moving forward.
Romanov could not bring his entire army into the city out of fear that there might be loyalists hiding elsewhere in the country, so he had to rely on the USSR army to finish of Karic and his Personal Guard.

The battle raged for hours and it almost seemed that Karic's counter attack would work. With Romanov's forces hard pressed to hold their ground, Karic used the opportunity to escape through the lines, while his men continued to fight.
The rain was pouring down, limiting visibility and making the horror of urban warfare even worse.
When morning came, the USSR arrived and found a battle still raging. Tanks and infantry stormed the city to help their comrades in battle.
Soon artillery was brought to position and ready to fire. This was the battles turning point, Karic's forces began to withdraw to the city centre once again. Only this time artillery barrages followed.

Dai-Gurren Mining and key figures in the Winter Army agree to mining partnership.
With a lack of other bids, and the fact that the Winter Army wants to start production as fast as possible, its key commanders have formed a partnership with Langley based Dai-Gurren Mining to set up operations the central highlands of the CFR. Outside analysts call this a bold and risky move for Dai-Gurren, as the CFR is still a war zone with dilapidated infrastructure.

In other sectors the Iron Tigers raids were beaten back quickly. The Iron Tigers diligently avoided contact with superior forces. If they were outnumbered, they simply faded away into the forests.

First Weekend of the War: Air Strike
It was, to be sure, a long mission.
It was also one of the largest and most long-range sorties of the Canissian Royal Air Force, although not the largest, and certainly not the largest in the world. That record was held from combatant nations in the Second War, although chances were with the Shepistan attacks, and their reliance on massive fleets of bombers, the record-breaking day would be soon.
The 200th Airborne Tanker Wings two squadrons had taken to the skies first, with an appropriate fighter escort and AWACS support, of course, and they loitered in wait for their charges. The mission would require two fuelings, but the potential return was considered high-value.
A thirsty fleet of B1R bombers, 8 full squadrons worth, and the 4 FB-111B squadrons of the 62nd Long Range Tactical Strike Wing, loaded with HARM missiles; another 4 squadrons of the 63rd LRTS Wing equally loaded; and a swarm of escorts in the form of 8 Air-superiority squadrons from the 1st Air Wing and their Typhoon H-1As.
Although, admittedly, this was just the first wave.
The B-1Rs and their various escorts skimmed low as they approached the northern shore of Shepistan, the 'Wild Weasel' FB-111Bs hunting for signs of contact with the Shepistani air defense radar network. As expected, almost all of the Shepistan attention was oriented towards the vicious fighting along the border with the Old Dominion.
As the air armada crossed Phase Line Zephyr, the air-superiority aircraft peeled away and entered Shepistani airspace along an alternate vector, at altitude. As expected, Shepistani interceptors scrambled to meet the invaders.
The Bombers continued to fly in low on their original course.
The bombers were detected, of course, by pickets and patrols, but by that time the Shepistani interceptors were already on their way to clash with the Royal Air Force's 1st Wing. Air-defense artillery lit up the approaching bombers, but the Wild Weasel FB-111Bs targeted the radars and lit into them with HARM missiles.
Shepistani air-defense were thick as mud, as expected, and the Wild Weasels had their work cut out for them. More Shepistani fighters scrambled to intercept as the first wave of B-1Rs moved into the areas where the Weasels had done their work, and began unloading on the air-defense sites. Bunker-busters pushed into the ground to destroy underground command and control centers; standard 1000-pounders were used to blast apart exposed buildings, launch sites, gun sites and so on; cluster bombs were dropped to disrupt attempts to repair the damage afterwards.
The B-1Rs were equipped with air-to-air missiles, but their defenses were limited, and despite having a bit of extra defense, they were not intended to handle enemy fighters alone. Once the Shepistan air forces' interceptors got organized, they closed with the RAF bombers to draw blood. The bombers used their air-defenses to confuse the issue while breaking contact.
But since most of the local air-interceptors had gone after the approaching fighters, several dozen miles away, the full weight of local interceptors was divided. The RAF lost some bombers, but a chunk had been taken out of Shepistan's northern coastal air defenses. It fell to the second wave to try to exploit the gap.
The RAF survivors pulled away, dogged by the Shepistani interceptors, splashing two more bombers in the sea in their pursuit. But Shepistani fighters saw the next wave of Canissian planes on approach, and while-- like the first wave-- the RAF pilots were tired from the long distance travelled, they also had a full load of munitions-- whereas the Shepistani interceptors had been gleefully corking off their missiles into the fleeing bomber force.
The RAFs 1st Air Superiority Command's 2nd and 3rd Wings headed the second wave, and this time they provided the tip of the spear for the incoming bombers. RAF air-to-air missiles slammed into the Shepistani formations, dropping and wounded a half-dozen as the tables were turned-- now the Shepistani fighters were fleeing, back to their homeland, dropping chaff and flare sin their wake.
The Shepistani flight leaders were no fools; they knew where their homeland's air defenses had been degraded and fled towards a different area of coastline, hoping to draw their Canissian attackers into a field of fire that would devastate them. The Canissians, however, weren't falling for it. They guarded the bombers' flanks as the heavies entered the area that had been cleared. Again, Wild Weasels did their jobs, providing follow-up strikes for remaining air defenses.
The target area had been chosen by Canissian war planners on purpose-- it was an area where air defenses were the thinnest, and the reason they were thin was precisely because there were no military targets of note nearby-- no airfield, army base, or dockyards, not even a supply depot worth note. Instead, once the bombers got through the initial air-defenses, they had near-open skies over... vast swathes of rural Shepistan.
It was exactly what the planners at the Hexagon wanted.
Bombers easily targeted telephone exchanges, railway bridges, roads and highways, road bridges and intersections, road repair and paving yards, dairy farms, feedlots, and grocery warehouses. Irrigation dams, grain silos, radio and TV stations, and fire stations fell en masse. The strike was chosen on the weekend precisely to minimize civilian casualties while striking crippling blows at the Shepistani food and supply chain at its source, and deal equally crippling blows at the ability to respond to the damage and repair it.
The effects would take awhile to ripple through the Shepistani supply and logistics network, but added to the damage was the hysteria of civilians, and the increased demand on military resources to plug the sudden gaps in their rear area supply lines. Military Police and Combat Engineers would be called from support duties at the front, local Reserves would be mobilized, more strain would be put on the Shepistan budget to deal with the problem.
Shepistani fighters had put up defenses, of course, and the RAF had taken losses-- unwelcome, but expected. But the aggregate effects of such destruction in the rear areas would, it was certain, put a serious dent in Shepistan's ability to sustain forces in the war and the civilian population's willingness to endure.
The RAF cleared out, leaving behind the following for the butcher's bill:
26 destroyed FB-111Bs and 17 destroyed B-1Rs.
18 Destroyed Typhoons.
21 Pilots had ejected over Shepistani territory and risked capture.
8 Pilots ejected over the sea, and were being picked up by Canissian submarines.
All air commands involved in this raid will need extensive repair & refit down time and will not be combat-ready again in the immediate future, with the exception of the tankers.

47 Air-interceptor fighters (unsure of type?)
38 Pilots ejected safely over Shepistan
2 Pilots ejected over the sea and were being picked up by Canissian submarines.

The 200th Airborne Tanker Wings two squadrons had taken to the skies first, with an appropriate fighter escort and AWACS support, of course, and they loitered in wait for their charges. The mission would require two fuelings, but the potential return was considered high-value.
A thirsty fleet of B1R bombers, 8 full squadrons worth, and the 4 FB-111B squadrons of the 62nd Long Range Tactical Strike Wing, loaded with HARM missiles; another 4 squadrons of the 63rd LRTS Wing equally loaded; and a swarm of escorts in the form of 8 Air-superiority squadrons from the 1st Air Wing and their Typhoon H-1As.
Although, admittedly, this was just the first wave.
The B-1Rs and their various escorts skimmed low as they approached the northern shore of Shepistan, the 'Wild Weasel' FB-111Bs hunting for signs of contact with the Shepistani air defense radar network. As expected, almost all of the Shepistan attention was oriented towards the vicious fighting along the border with the Old Dominion.
As the air armada crossed Phase Line Zephyr, the air-superiority aircraft peeled away and entered Shepistani airspace along an alternate vector, at altitude. As expected, Shepistani interceptors scrambled to meet the invaders.
The Bombers continued to fly in low on their original course.
The bombers were detected, of course, by pickets and patrols, but by that time the Shepistani interceptors were already on their way to clash with the Royal Air Force's 1st Wing. Air-defense artillery lit up the approaching bombers, but the Wild Weasel FB-111Bs targeted the radars and lit into them with HARM missiles.
Shepistani air-defense were thick as mud, as expected, and the Wild Weasels had their work cut out for them. More Shepistani fighters scrambled to intercept as the first wave of B-1Rs moved into the areas where the Weasels had done their work, and began unloading on the air-defense sites. Bunker-busters pushed into the ground to destroy underground command and control centers; standard 1000-pounders were used to blast apart exposed buildings, launch sites, gun sites and so on; cluster bombs were dropped to disrupt attempts to repair the damage afterwards.
The B-1Rs were equipped with air-to-air missiles, but their defenses were limited, and despite having a bit of extra defense, they were not intended to handle enemy fighters alone. Once the Shepistan air forces' interceptors got organized, they closed with the RAF bombers to draw blood. The bombers used their air-defenses to confuse the issue while breaking contact.
But since most of the local air-interceptors had gone after the approaching fighters, several dozen miles away, the full weight of local interceptors was divided. The RAF lost some bombers, but a chunk had been taken out of Shepistan's northern coastal air defenses. It fell to the second wave to try to exploit the gap.
The RAF survivors pulled away, dogged by the Shepistani interceptors, splashing two more bombers in the sea in their pursuit. But Shepistani fighters saw the next wave of Canissian planes on approach, and while-- like the first wave-- the RAF pilots were tired from the long distance travelled, they also had a full load of munitions-- whereas the Shepistani interceptors had been gleefully corking off their missiles into the fleeing bomber force.
The RAFs 1st Air Superiority Command's 2nd and 3rd Wings headed the second wave, and this time they provided the tip of the spear for the incoming bombers. RAF air-to-air missiles slammed into the Shepistani formations, dropping and wounded a half-dozen as the tables were turned-- now the Shepistani fighters were fleeing, back to their homeland, dropping chaff and flare sin their wake.
The Shepistani flight leaders were no fools; they knew where their homeland's air defenses had been degraded and fled towards a different area of coastline, hoping to draw their Canissian attackers into a field of fire that would devastate them. The Canissians, however, weren't falling for it. They guarded the bombers' flanks as the heavies entered the area that had been cleared. Again, Wild Weasels did their jobs, providing follow-up strikes for remaining air defenses.
The target area had been chosen by Canissian war planners on purpose-- it was an area where air defenses were the thinnest, and the reason they were thin was precisely because there were no military targets of note nearby-- no airfield, army base, or dockyards, not even a supply depot worth note. Instead, once the bombers got through the initial air-defenses, they had near-open skies over... vast swathes of rural Shepistan.
It was exactly what the planners at the Hexagon wanted.
Bombers easily targeted telephone exchanges, railway bridges, roads and highways, road bridges and intersections, road repair and paving yards, dairy farms, feedlots, and grocery warehouses. Irrigation dams, grain silos, radio and TV stations, and fire stations fell en masse. The strike was chosen on the weekend precisely to minimize civilian casualties while striking crippling blows at the Shepistani food and supply chain at its source, and deal equally crippling blows at the ability to respond to the damage and repair it.
The effects would take awhile to ripple through the Shepistani supply and logistics network, but added to the damage was the hysteria of civilians, and the increased demand on military resources to plug the sudden gaps in their rear area supply lines. Military Police and Combat Engineers would be called from support duties at the front, local Reserves would be mobilized, more strain would be put on the Shepistan budget to deal with the problem.
Shepistani fighters had put up defenses, of course, and the RAF had taken losses-- unwelcome, but expected. But the aggregate effects of such destruction in the rear areas would, it was certain, put a serious dent in Shepistan's ability to sustain forces in the war and the civilian population's willingness to endure.
The RAF cleared out, leaving behind the following for the butcher's bill:
26 destroyed FB-111Bs and 17 destroyed B-1Rs.
18 Destroyed Typhoons.
21 Pilots had ejected over Shepistani territory and risked capture.
8 Pilots ejected over the sea, and were being picked up by Canissian submarines.
All air commands involved in this raid will need extensive repair & refit down time and will not be combat-ready again in the immediate future, with the exception of the tankers.

38 Pilots ejected safely over Shepistan
2 Pilots ejected over the sea and were being picked up by Canissian submarines.

Orders had already gone out to most of the major arms manufacturers, and TA Arty battalions equipped with the new “cheapo” FLINTLOCK MLRS were starting to be assembled. Most other major units were another matter.
Already, the ODAAF was down to under 200 JAS 39 Gripens, And with barely 30 F-22s and another 40 F-4Js on hand, the actual air defense arm of the ODAAF was pretty damn bare at the moment. At the Lockheed Dominion plant near the Augustine border construction of replacement Gripens was being expedited. Fortunately, MESS air assets continued to pour into the country.
Fortunately, most of the armored and Mechanized units were generally unscathed so far, but Chesapeake Arms had still been gearing up at the Leopard 2A6 Factory when the war started, and now there was a consensus that a cheaper tank would likely have to be acquired to supplement the force. There were a couple of designs that were being dusted off.
The Lord Fairfax Strike Group continued to be floundering, and as yet there was no word as to whether or not the carrier could be saved. The York had been written off, though, and it wasn’t expected that the John Smith would be rendered operational in a timely manner.
The ground war so far had seemed to be going reasonably well. A major Shepistani attack[OOC: Shep will post it] had been repulsed with negligible losses, and the I Corps was pushing through the Alleghany Mountains. Very soon, the preponderance of power on the ground would swing decisively in favor of the MESS, they just needed one or two convoys to get through….

Inter-MESS co-operation had always been the backbone towards making the sometimes limited numbers each member possesed that much greater...now it would be proven in the largest series of Joint MESS missions since the Second War.
The Canissian Royal Air Force was leading the first wave of this charge mostly because of the greater level of HARM-equipped fighters and long range assets however with the first chunk taken out of the Shepistan Air Defense network the Wilkonian Air Service now came into the picture.
The entire 2nd Bomber Wing, 1st Interceptor Wing, and half of the available tanker squadrons had been assembling roughly 400 nm due east of the Canissians with joint tactical radios enablign a confirmed countdown between the waves. It was designed to give the Shepistani defenders no rest for the longest possible period of time. Even as the Canissian forces began their inital approach the 101st began it mission to open the gateway for the approach.
With the Voegele/Bareilles CVBG in position for most of the last half day and under strict EMCON the Navy had been monitoring the huge radar blip running over Shepistani skies. ELINT specialists had been watchign as stikes were targeting what had to be TianXian F-22s which meant the system clearly had plenty of power to spare. If the Canissian and Wilkonian strike was going to work the airborne radar traps (and there were definately several of them up right now) would have to come down otherwise the strike would get mauled coming in.
The advantage form a planning standpoint was that for all its power it was clearly not a wide angle search radar and if the Canissian's inital feint drew their attention then the Wilkonian planes would be able to slip in. In order to get close enough, though, it would take a very long time at wave-height so hardly free of danger. The entire 101st Incterceptor Squadron was tasked with eliminating the airborne radar traps along with any other airborne radars functioning at the time. In wing pairs they received strike authorization, topped off the tanks one last time and began the long run to staging grounds south and east oftheir current position.
When the Canissian strikes began the 101st was in the midst of diving to the deck in order to gain maximum closure on the radar traps before manuevering to engagement height. As the Shepistani Air Defense network began lighting up the Canissian diversionary group with BOMARC long-range SAMs the F106H triplets began orienting towards the new threat.
The leader of the 101st, Major Scott Huntington was still slightly impressed at the discipline because at least two of the triplets stayed behind watching the OD/Shepistani border while a thrid maintained a lazy patrol still oriented towards any further TX strikes...mostly thoguh despite precaution you can't watch everywhere at once and with the Canissians to the NorthWest, the OD to the West and South and TianXia to the SouthEast there simply wasn't anyone left to watch the NorthEast where he wa coming in from.
With the amount of radar energy in the air it was almost certian that the AIM-120Ds would have to switch over to home on jam at some point but in the meantime it would have to be a classic close and kill mission on semi-active starting right about...now. Pulling the stick back hard he sent his Lgihtning II into a huge powered climb, using every ounce of power available to his twin F-119s rising from a bare 100' above sea level to a near dizzying 60,000ft in a little under a minute. At height he finally light his radara off, obtained a solid lock on all three darts and launched 2 AIM-120Ds at each from roughly 45km out. With his wingmate doing the same the immediately began a turn and dive back to the deck to begin their egress.
Less than a minute later as the missiles caught up with the triplet explosions tore through the sky even as a nearby BOMARC squadron began lighting off against the Lighting IIs. With the power of the ground radar stations now directed at them it would be impossible for the F-22s to avoid being tracked so now it was a matter of pure speed. The F-99Fs had a speed advantage but not by much, theproblem was they had a definite range advantage. Almost half the squadron would be spalshed but fortunately they were already far off the coast by that point and in 4 of 7 cases the pilot sucessfully ejected.
With the 101st back out of the engagement zone and the Canissian RAF heaivly engaged in its resource denial campaign the 2nd Bomber Wing continued to wait patiently still hovering to the east of the current engagement zone as the Shepistani defenses rallied and tried to tempt the Canissians into an attack much as they were doing to the Wilkonian F-22s though in that case the remainder of the squadron was well over the horizon and heading for a refuel and home.
Finally as the CRAF finally cleared the engagement zone and began moving towards its final refuel and rendevous before heading home the 2nd finished tanking and began its run. They had been forced to wait until the final download of target profiles and co-ordiantes could be completed from the Canissian run. They already had a huge stock of data from years of OD and Shepistani skirmishes but now the CRAF penetration mission provided the last load of data.
The first wave would be from the 40 F/A-18Ds of the WIN CVBG alreayd in position. Equipped almost exclusively with SLAM-ER ATAs. With GPS not available to Wilkonia when development began the focus was on turning the inertial navigation and target aquisition capabilities into true winners. With data now solidly available for every near coastal radar tracking station and air defense center the Hornets were tasked with striking a new corridor parrallel to the Canissian wave. With 12 sites targeted and 6 missiles to each plane it would be 20 targets per each installation and all coming in on those wonderful wave-skimming .8mach trajectories. While Shepistan had heavily invested in anti-fighter defenses it had far less available in terms of Anti-cruise missile protections. Still planners had only expected to hit 75-85% or targets in the entire strike package and BDA after the fact would be critical, for now it was a matter of blasting as many SLAM-ER ATAs as possible and loosening the air defense line around the North East coast.
The incursion would not, of course go unnoticed but the Shepistani air controllers were still in the process of getting the fighters used to engage the Canissians on the ground and getting replacement CAP aircraft back aloft. Already several stations had been replenished but it was an ongoing process and the second scramble alert in roughly 4 hours was already starting to wear the maintenance and munitions groups out. Nonentheless it was no fewer than 100 fighters who were poised to engage the incoming Hornets even as they triggered off their main payload and continued to move in, trying as best as possible to make themselves appear as another diversionary group which still needed attention. When the strike group finally came within 65nm of the coast they began turning back even as FMRAAMs began lighting off after them and the still alert BOMARCs opened fire as well. It would be 26 splashed Hornets all told, most by FMRAAMs however the onrushing fighters managed to enter the envelope for the F-14Es of the Carrier Battle Group and their AIM-54Ds. With even longer range advantage the counter-battery would swat 17 assorted fighters down before both sides returned to within the envelope of their own radar installations, the Shepistani controllers now wary of exposing another forward radar team to detection and attack by the 2 remaining F-22 squadrons the now identifieed Wilkonian's were known to have.
It was only with the inital wave of SLAM-ERs homing in on the radar installations that the 2nd Bomber Wing began powering in, this time at altitude. They would need the space for the JSOW-ERs to work in. With 48 B-1s and 32 F-15Es they carried nearly 770 JSOW-ERs and they only needed to get within 100nm of the coast before they could add a second barrage of inertial guided, infrared targeted destruction. With the BROACH charge onboard even the most hardened BOMARC site would fall victim. 4 were targeted at every known BOMARC site within the corridor comprising roughly 3 BOMARC squadrons or roughly 180 of the 900 launch sites [Mark I'm using the 60/missiles per squadron from the diagram you provided] The remainder of the JSOWs were targeted onto air defense command bunkers, radara sites, and the SAGE centers linking all of them.
Even as the 2nd was lighting off the Bareilles/Voegele group opened up with a wave of TLAM-Fs also using the BROACH warhead that would add another weapon inbound at each of the BOMARC shelters. In total it would be nearly 1000 muntions ranging in from NNE to true north all targeted at the BOMARC sites and their attendant appartus.

The 10th, 17th, and 18th were all busy loading themsleves aboard ship even as Air Transport Command was busy staging the elments neccessary to begin moving all of I Corps to the Old Dominion. Planners expected that within a matter of two weeks on the outside V corps could be in place and ready to move out a few days later. I Corps would take longer due to the 1st Division's much heavier transport requirements but planners didn't think a month would be too far outside reasonable...but then planners are always optimistic.

In wing pairs they received strike authorization, topped off the tanks one last time and began the long run to staging grounds south and east oftheir current position.
When the Canissian strikes began the 101st was in the midst of diving to the deck in order to gain maximum closure on the radar traps before manuevering to engagement height. As the Shepistani Air Defense network began lighting up the Canissian diversionary group with BOMARC long-range SAMs the F106H triplets began orienting towards the new threat.
The leader of the 101st, Major Scott Huntington was still slightly impressed at the discipline because at least two of the triplets stayed behind watching the OD/Shepistani border while a thrid maintained a lazy patrol still oriented towards any further TX strikes...mostly thoguh despite precaution you can't watch everywhere at once and with the Canissians to the NorthWest, the OD to the West and South and TianXia to the SouthEast there simply wasn't anyone left to watch the NorthEast where he wa coming in from.
With the amount of radar energy in the air it was almost certian that the AIM-120Ds would have to switch over to home on jam at some point but in the meantime it would have to be a classic close and kill mission on semi-active starting right about...now. Pulling the stick back hard he sent his Lgihtning II into a huge powered climb, using every ounce of power available to his twin F-119s rising from a bare 100' above sea level to a near dizzying 60,000ft in a little under a minute. At height he finally light his radara off, obtained a solid lock on all three darts and launched 2 AIM-120Ds at each from roughly 45km out. With his wingmate doing the same the immediately began a turn and dive back to the deck to begin their egress.
Less than a minute later as the missiles caught up with the triplet explosions tore through the sky even as a nearby BOMARC squadron began lighting off against the Lighting IIs. With the power of the ground radar stations now directed at them it would be impossible for the F-22s to avoid being tracked so now it was a matter of pure speed. The F-99Fs had a speed advantage but not by much, theproblem was they had a definite range advantage. Almost half the squadron would be spalshed but fortunately they were already far off the coast by that point and in 4 of 7 cases the pilot sucessfully ejected.
With the 101st back out of the engagement zone and the Canissian RAF heaivly engaged in its resource denial campaign the 2nd Bomber Wing continued to wait patiently still hovering to the east of the current engagement zone as the Shepistani defenses rallied and tried to tempt the Canissians into an attack much as they were doing to the Wilkonian F-22s though in that case the remainder of the squadron was well over the horizon and heading for a refuel and home.
Finally as the CRAF finally cleared the engagement zone and began moving towards its final refuel and rendevous before heading home the 2nd finished tanking and began its run. They had been forced to wait until the final download of target profiles and co-ordiantes could be completed from the Canissian run. They already had a huge stock of data from years of OD and Shepistani skirmishes but now the CRAF penetration mission provided the last load of data.
The first wave would be from the 40 F/A-18Ds of the WIN CVBG alreayd in position. Equipped almost exclusively with SLAM-ER ATAs. With GPS not available to Wilkonia when development began the focus was on turning the inertial navigation and target aquisition capabilities into true winners. With data now solidly available for every near coastal radar tracking station and air defense center the Hornets were tasked with striking a new corridor parrallel to the Canissian wave. With 12 sites targeted and 6 missiles to each plane it would be 20 targets per each installation and all coming in on those wonderful wave-skimming .8mach trajectories. While Shepistan had heavily invested in anti-fighter defenses it had far less available in terms of Anti-cruise missile protections. Still planners had only expected to hit 75-85% or targets in the entire strike package and BDA after the fact would be critical, for now it was a matter of blasting as many SLAM-ER ATAs as possible and loosening the air defense line around the North East coast.
The incursion would not, of course go unnoticed but the Shepistani air controllers were still in the process of getting the fighters used to engage the Canissians on the ground and getting replacement CAP aircraft back aloft. Already several stations had been replenished but it was an ongoing process and the second scramble alert in roughly 4 hours was already starting to wear the maintenance and munitions groups out. Nonentheless it was no fewer than 100 fighters who were poised to engage the incoming Hornets even as they triggered off their main payload and continued to move in, trying as best as possible to make themselves appear as another diversionary group which still needed attention. When the strike group finally came within 65nm of the coast they began turning back even as FMRAAMs began lighting off after them and the still alert BOMARCs opened fire as well. It would be 26 splashed Hornets all told, most by FMRAAMs however the onrushing fighters managed to enter the envelope for the F-14Es of the Carrier Battle Group and their AIM-54Ds. With even longer range advantage the counter-battery would swat 17 assorted fighters down before both sides returned to within the envelope of their own radar installations, the Shepistani controllers now wary of exposing another forward radar team to detection and attack by the 2 remaining F-22 squadrons the now identifieed Wilkonian's were known to have.
It was only with the inital wave of SLAM-ERs homing in on the radar installations that the 2nd Bomber Wing began powering in, this time at altitude. They would need the space for the JSOW-ERs to work in. With 48 B-1s and 32 F-15Es they carried nearly 770 JSOW-ERs and they only needed to get within 100nm of the coast before they could add a second barrage of inertial guided, infrared targeted destruction. With the BROACH charge onboard even the most hardened BOMARC site would fall victim. 4 were targeted at every known BOMARC site within the corridor comprising roughly 3 BOMARC squadrons or roughly 180 of the 900 launch sites [Mark I'm using the 60/missiles per squadron from the diagram you provided] The remainder of the JSOWs were targeted onto air defense command bunkers, radara sites, and the SAGE centers linking all of them.
Even as the 2nd was lighting off the Bareilles/Voegele group opened up with a wave of TLAM-Fs also using the BROACH warhead that would add another weapon inbound at each of the BOMARC shelters. In total it would be nearly 1000 muntions ranging in from NNE to true north all targeted at the BOMARC sites and their attendant appartus.

Embarkation was more than a quarter finished for the balance of V corps. With the 14th Division already stationed in the far eastern protion of the Old Dominion as part of the MESS's Southern Command there was already a prescence on the ground but one division, even a Wilkonian Heavy Division would need backup. With the state of emergency declared every Wilkonian Flag ship in port, and there were many, had been seconded for transport duty under Naval Reserve recall laws. The 10th, 17th, and 18th were all busy loading themsleves aboard ship even as Air Transport Command was busy staging the elments neccessary to begin moving all of I Corps to the Old Dominion. Planners expected that within a matter of two weeks on the outside V corps could be in place and ready to move out a few days later. I Corps would take longer due to the 1st Division's much heavier transport requirements but planners didn't think a month would be too far outside reasonable...but then planners are always optimistic.

The regiment advanced cautiously, wary of more ambushes from the Revolutionary Front unit they'd been stalking. What they estimated to be the equivalent of a half-regiment had been hiding in a mountain valley, until heavy bombing combined with an attack by the First Heavy Regiment had driven them into the waiting arms of the Second MechInf.
The Revolutionary Front CO had manged to escape the trap, guiding his forces through Baernish lines in a perfectly conducted breakthrough. Not that they hadn't paid for it - nearly a score of RF vehicles lay burning over the last two miles alone, but one of the BDA tanks they'd destroyed on the way through had been a company commander's, and the minute of confusion allowed the militants to escape the jaws of His Grace's Army's trap.
Even so, their days were numbered, as airstrikes continued round the clock, and their line of retreat drew them closer to not only the Revolutionary Front territories, but also the fresh Second Armored Division, which had taken up position between Weinberg's region and theirs.
Idly, the colonel commanding the regiment wondered how the commandos were doing ferreting out the Iron Tigers who'd been causing Weinberg so much trouble.

The Old Dominion talks about 1946 Ceasefire violations, but leaves out the fact that the '46 ceasefire stipulates that the boarder between Shepistan and the Old Dominion is to be a demilitarized zone some 30 miles wide; which is clearly not the case due to heavy Old Dominion fortifications within the DMZ zone on their side of the line.
When Shepistan responded to the outright aggression by the Old Dominion in a limited and controlled manner with an aerial strike against Old Dominion forces at sea; instead of initating a general land war; the Old Dominion retalitated by initating a general land war on the New Continent and invoking the Article of the MESS treaty that requires all MESS members to assist it.
Who then, is the real warmongerer?
