Yes, although it was not until the 20th century that the US decidedly took the 1st place among industrialized nations. The period of rapid industrialization in the US pretty much coincided a similar process in Germany. By the beginning of the 20th century both Germany and the US had surpassed the British Empire. However, by WW1 the US already surpassed the combined output of Germany and the Austro-Hungarian empire. (The latter, by the way, was far from insignificant.)
