Bush's cronies said that it's "unthinkable" their bailout won't pass by week's end.
Let's see who folds on this one. Bush and - as it has been demonstrated, totally everyone in his administration - are major assholes, but congresscritters will face elections sooner or later, and since the public response to bailout is very negative to say the least, perhaps that would scare them enough to either kill the bailout, or at least overtake the dying companies so that the one who foots the bill also owns the bankrupt morons.

Personally, I'd rather see the bailout fail to pass and global chaos than keep the pigmen on the binge of power and money at the expense of our freedoms and prosperity.
We need to shift the paradigm in our favour. The line must be drawn here, no further.
Just watched the Senate hearing on CSPAN. Paulson looks totally fried. Actually, if some more of the shock wears off, Paulson's "proposal" can fail.

I suspect that the only thing that might move him is the sudden appearance of Warren Buffett with a suitcase of money at Goldman Sachs, dropping five billion to get possibly the most insanely nice deal I've ever seen, a hefty chunk of stock paying 10% dividends, warrants for common at a low price, and so forth.
I have no doubts that only Paulson's old roost being saved might make him stop completely. He's surrendering turf, but he hates it and is lying through his teeth the whole time.

Actually, Chrysler obtained that loan though private financing, with the government merely guaranteeing it in exchange for warrants to buy up to 9% of Chrysler's stock. So yeah, if that was a bailout...
