Don't know if this warrants its own thread: Sarah Palin's interview with Katie Couric
No wonder McCain wanted a timeout and a restructuring and unspecified rescheduling of the VP debates. Biden is going to shred Palin.

My God. This is like the people who didn't give a damn in High School history being called for a question while they're doodling.
It simply defies belief.

Oh yeah, she's more than ready to face Joe Biden on a debate stage.

How in hell did this women ever get elected to anything? She is the typical empty bad. And that person is supposed to be Number 2 in the whole system? Man, Dan Quayle must be pretty happy of not being the only nimwit around anymore.
Katie Couric must have been ready to just beat her over the head with a baseball bat at the end of the interview. What an arrogant dumbass that person is. Stalling, talking points repeated ad nauseum.... urgh.

A decision must be made in the life of every nation at the very moment when the grasp of the enemy is at its throat. Then, it seems that the only way to survive is to use the means of the enemy, to rest survival upon what is expedient, to look the other way. Well, the answer to that is 'survival as what'? My God, she is just PAINFUL to listen to. I almost felt bad for her.
Almost.
The fact that she could be a heartbeat away from the presidency is utterly terrifying to me.

Possible witness tampering, wee!
And of course now they're whining that the investigation has been "tainted" with partisan politics. . .somehow."Until Gov. Palin was appointed to the McCain ticket, everybody was fine with proceeding with the investigation," he said. "Then, the McCain campaign sent up 30 people to the state and, all of a sudden, people are not participating in the investigation."
In his letter, Gara asked troopers to investigate possible "criminal witness tampering," saying that it's possible that "certain persons" induced witnesses not to cooperate with the legislative investigation, which was authorized by a bipartisan vote before Palin joined McCain's ticket.
Gara "is not alleging that a particular person has engaged in witness tampering" but noted that "certain staff for the McCain campaign came to Alaska in an effort to block" the legislative investigation. He noted that two McCain staffers "have held multiple press conferences in Anchorage to block the investigation."
Gosh, how on earth did Sarah Palin becomes the governor of Alaska?
I think people on this board is much more suited to understand and answer an interview in regards to political issues.
Every answer is basically 'I think' .
Sarah Palin don't even seems like the type of person who understand politics in the first place.

Sadly, the answer probably runs along the lines of her being a family gal and looking "cute." You'd be surprised how often that can work.ray245 wrote:Gosh, how on earth did Sarah Palin becomes the governor of Alaska?

Every wholesome, white-collar bedtime yarn for children about how anyone can grow up to be President (or VP as the case may be) seems alarmingly prescient right now. Grotesquely, alarmingly prescient. Then again, I don't really know of any system with any natural safeguards against this kind of pandering populism that isn't a failure for the obvious reasons, other than maybe encouraging education so that the public's demands aren't so infantile.Illuminatus Primus wrote:My God. There used to be safeguards against populism, the Framers of the American Constitution originally put only one half of one third of the government under the direct control of the people. Then again, Andrew Jackson still got his old leather ass elected, so the actual efficacy of these safeguards is questionable at best.TithonusSyndrome wrote:Every wholesome, white-collar bedtime yarn for children about how anyone can grow up to be President (or VP as the case may be) seems alarmingly prescient right now. Alaska is a state composed wholly of small towns and villages which are even more insular than what you might normally find in the US; not only are there villages out in the ass middle of nowhere even more isolated than most rural towns in America, but the entire fucking state seems to have this queer mentality of "there's us Alaskans and then there's that other lower 48".ray245 wrote:Gosh, how on earth did Sarah Palin becomes the governor of Alaska?

Given that, it's no wonder at all that a state composed wholly of small towns and villages would elect a village mayor that happens to be better looking than most politicians while being too dumb to hold her own against the largely-toothless media.

Those safeguards had largely been dismantled by the time of Jackson's election; in fact, that election was the first time all white males over the age of 21 could vote for President. After that, it was just widening the voter base by abolishing discrimination and the institution of direct election of Senators.Adrian Laguna wrote:There used to be safeguards against populism, the Framers of the American Constitution originally put only one half of one third of the government under the direct control of the people. From the Couric Interview..
COURIC: Why isn’t it better, Governor Palin, to spend $700 billion helping middle-class families struggling with health care, housing, gas and groceries? ... Instead of helping these big financial institutions that played a role in creating this mess?
PALIN: Ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health care reform that is needed to help shore up the economy– Oh, it’s got to be about job creation too. So health care reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions.
It's embarassingly bad.COURIC: You've cited Alaska's proximity to Russia as part of your foreign policy experience. What did you mean by that?
PALIN: That Alaska has a very narrow maritime border between a foreign country, Russia, and on our other side, the land-- boundary that we have with-- Canada. It-- it's funny that a comment like that was-- kind of made to-- cari-- I don't know, you know? Reporters--
COURIC: Mock?
PALIN: Yeah, mocked, I guess that's the word, yeah.
COURIC: Explain to me why that enhances your foreign policy credentials.
PALIN: Well, it certainly does because our-- our next door neighbors are foreign countries. They're in the state that I am the executive of. And there in Russia--
COURIC: Have you ever been involved with any negotiations, for example, with the Russians?
PALIN: We have trade missions back and forth. We-- we do-- it's very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where-- where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border. It is-- from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to-- to our state.

That isn't necessarily a bad thing if you have got a well-informed and intelligent electorate to rely upon. Too bad that wasn't the case.starslayer wrote:Those safeguards had largely been dismantled by the time of Jackson's election; in fact, that election was the first time all white males over the age of 21 could vote for President. "Our next door neighbors are foreign countries" indeed. Hey. Everybody in the USA has foreign policy experience simply because there are countries that *gasp* have land borders with the US.

Sarah Palin understands politics just fine. She beat a sitting governor in a primary election and she came within 300 votes of getting an umpteen term Republican congressman unseated in favor of her own lieutenant governor. What she doesn't appear to understand are the issues, and guess what: that didn't keep George W. Bush out of the White House.I think people on this board is much more suited to understand and answer an interview in regards to political issues.

She probably has a good grasp on Alaskan issues, which unfortunately for her are not the same as overall American issues. Not all of us have a government that can always squeeze more money for the budget out of a couple oil companies in the area.RedImperator wrote:By running a successful insurgent campaign against an incumbent Republican governor who managed to be too corrupt even for Alaskans in the primaries, and being charismatic and making campaign promises Alaskans liked in the general.ray245 wrote:Gosh, how on earth did Sarah Palin becomes the governor of Alaska?

hey hey, from Snopes.com
Texas rancher whose hand was caught in a gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to Sarah Palin and her bid to be a heartbeat away from being President. The old rancher said, "Well, ya know, Palin is a post turtle." Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a post turtle was. The old rancher said, "When you're driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a post turtle .You know she didn't get up there by herself, she doesn't belong up there, she doesn't know what to do while she is up there, and you just wonder what kind of dumb ass put her up there to begin with."
